2020-21 MBB Season

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...ams-division-men-basketball-tournament-begins
This seems extremely shortsided by the NCAA per usual. Basically if your team can't play because of COVID you forfeit. Waiting until a high profile player like Luka Garza or Ayo get's it and that runs their teams chances. This is the main difference between football and basketball. Losing one player in basketball could be the difference for your team. Pretty much everyy team has been impacted this season so to assume that won't happen or don't care if that doesn't happen in postseason seems stupid.

From the teams perspective, I get it that it seems rough, but realistically, what else are they supposed to do?

You cannot pause the entire tournament because one team caught the 'rona. I guess they could re-seed if there are multiple teams that are out to keep the games, but that gets touchy with such short notice, and allowing teams to prepare.

What does the NCAA care about? Money for the scheduled tourney that makes them obscene coin regardless of who is playing, or a few players being held out due to Covid affecting the balance of play?

You could easily see a cinderalla story on the flip side of Covid situations that would be riveting TV.
considering that the NCAA cancelled the 2020 tournament outright makes answering to your questions more difficult than I thought at first consideration.

From a chaos lover angle, part of me is giddy about the possibility of Duke being one of the first four out, a 16 seed getting sick and then Duke being slotted in their spot and the INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF SCREAMING that would follow it.

It's a funny argument to make, all things considered, but the thought that CSU at 14-4 and 11-3 in conference goes to the NIT while Indiana at 12-10 and 7-8 goes to the NCAAs is laughable to me.

I get that the MWC is not the Big Ten and CSU is, well, CSU, but that's just stupid to me. Want to make the tournament? Finish at least 7th in a 14 team league.

(The thing that makes me sympathetic to the sheep this year is that they have the same number of losses as Boise and SDSU, but the difference that they have had more games lost to covid. That's a crappy way to miss out on the tournament.)

Ok- here's a little bit of a thought experiment for you and @Buffnik . Stripping out team names and conferences, where would you rank or what seed line would you give the following teams?

I was told there would be no math.

In all seriousness, I have no idea what would be the correct seed.

I get it! I'm just seeing the worst case scenario, like imagine if Baylor or Gonzaga get it. Like for either of those teams to not prove they are number one after basically being undefeated two years straight. I can't imagine. Or a couple teams in the same round get it. Like there is no perfect solution. Just from a competitive standpoint you hope there are no issues, I just can't see it going that way.

Can you give me NET and KenPom for these same teams? That's what I go by. I've got issues with RPI and BPI. I don't know what method for determining team strength was used to calculate the SOS & SOR, so I may not value that data.

But I do love blind resume.

fwiw, I also care a lot about Q1 & Q2 records from NET, because I think that's the best indicator of how you compete vs tourney caliber teams.

Is 9 and 4 v q1 and q2 teams good? All losses on the road.

That's a team poised to be in the Sweet 16 with the right KenPom draw (barring bad luck on a UW-style outlier on 3pt shooting).
That does seem like our ceiling yea. Once we get there though this team has shown they can beat anyone

Yeah. But I'd put ceiling at Elite 8 as long as we're not a 4 or 5 facing a 1. Other seeds within our upset range this year.

Senior leader at PG with elite FT shooting makes us a very tough out.

I made my guesses as to who the teams were (or what type of team they were) and was mostly right on. Like, team F is clearly a middling Big 10 team. Team G though, what a strange resume they have.

The ducks have a very bizarre resume. You look at it blind like that, and then go look at that schedule, and what exactly have they done? They are way more on the bubble than I thought. I couldn't figure out the sheep on the blind resume. Indiana doesn't belong in the tournament. Get over 60% win % total and then we can talk.

For anyone who still wants to guess, I put everything in the spoiler

I think your order is the right one except I would switch Indiana and Oregon. I feel like Palm, Lundardi, and Katz are probably the 3 best known bracket projection guys, and they are all over the map on these teams (see below).

I kind of picked these teams because I want to complain about how the Buffs have been ranked this year, because Loyola, SD St., Texas Tech are all ranked in both polls right now and Oregon's ranked in the Coach's Poll. The love for Texas Tech in particular baffles me if you look at their resume blind.

For team F, that's 10 of its 11 losses coming against top teams.

(11/12 after today. They've got some injury excuses, too, but probably need to find 3 more wins to finish on the right side of the bubble line.)

Team A looks like that classic 7/8 that scares the hell out of a 1 or 2 when they see their bracket.

Team G is one of those Dayton play-in teams that could get hot and ruin some dreams.

Team F... win 2 or 3 more of those 11 games. The point is to win games. I don't care how difficult your schedule is if you don't ever win games. They've beat one top half of Big 10 team. 2 I guess. Rugters is technically in the top half of the big 10 by being in 7th place.

CU would probably be in like 5th place in the Big 10, but with wins against Illinois, Ohio St. and and Iowa and losses to Northwestern and Penn State. Lol.

As for the resume arguments. Give me SOR over SOS every day. Playing a tough schedule should mean very little if you don't win games.

You know Tennessee is not helping us by falling off so badly here at the end of the season! It was a good loss when it happened, but now the Vols suck.
At least with it being on the road there's absolutely zero chance that it falls to a quad 2 game.

It does, however, absolutely drag down our OOC SOS.
