2021/22 SOCCER general off-season news thread (Non-conf. sched. released. 1st match Aug. 18th)

Kornieck comes in in the 80th minute v Mexico and is directly involved in the only goal of the match -

She really seems to be making the most of the minutes she’s getting. It’s going to be great to see her grow in the coming years.

Kornieck on for the final three minutes or so for a very tired Rose Lavelle. US defeats Canada 1-0 to qualify for the 2024 Olympics! They had already qualified for thee 2023 World Cup.

Now less than 1 month until the team (and CU sports overall) begin the season!

It looks like he move from Orlando to San Diego has jump started her professional career. And her stellar play with SD is what earned her a call up to the national team.

To get call ups for the national team between now and the World Cup next summer she will need to continue to get Andonovski's attention through consistently impactful play with SD. And if she gets more call ups she has to get onto the pitch during matches and continue to make an impact. Making thee World Cup roster will be a challenge as the roster will only have 23 players.

The US hosts a pair of friendlies with Nigeria in early September. Hopefully Kornieck will be on the roster for them.

Congrats to the team for its academic honor!

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Colorado women's soccer team earned its 11th consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award this week.

The achievement for the 2021-22 season is the 12th for the program since 2010. To qualify for the award a team must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Colorado finished the 2021-22 school year with a 3.21 team GPA. The Buffaloes have had a 3.0 or better for 27 consecutive semesters entering this fall.

Last season, the Buffs had nine individuals achieve the Pac-12 Honor Roll.

The 2022 season kicks off on Aug. 18 against Weber State (4 p.m. MT) at Prentup Field.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Pac-12 coaches anticipate the Colorado soccer team to finish in the top half of the conference, slotting the Buffaloes fifth in Wednesday's preseason coaches poll.

Stanford was picked at the top of the poll, earning six first-place votes. UCLA and Washington State also got first-place votes, coming in second and third, respectively. USC, Colorado and California rounded out the top six.

CU was picked eighth last year and finished with an 8-7-4 record. The last time the Buffs were inside the top-five of the preseason poll was in 2019 (5th).

Additionally, the United Soccer Coaches named fifth-year defender Hannah Sharts as one of its 35 Defenders to Watch List. The lists are being released for the first time this season by the Division I All-America Committees to promote college soccer leading up to the official start date for the regular season later this month. The lists include United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and first or second-team All-Region players from 2021, who are scheduled to return for the 2022 season.

Sharts, one of the team's captains for the 2022 season, returns to the fold with fellow fifth-year Kayleigh Webb. The Buffs have a mix of strong veteran leaders and a solid core of newcomers, including Stanford transfer Civana Kuhlmann.

Colorado opens the season on the Pac-12 Network against Weber State (Aug. 18, 4 p.m. MT). The Buffs will host San Diego (Aug. 21) and Valparaiso (Aug. 26) before heading on the road to take on No. 3 BYU (Aug. 29).

I feel this may be one of the best teams in program history and thus it's possible they will finish higher than fifth.

Lots of talent and depth at almost every position.

back from scrimmage. Team looks much more dangerous in the offensive end with multiple options. James, kluhman, and Hayword all look capable of scoring goals. Lister, freshman from England and Layne a freshman from FoCo both looked like they have talent to score. The both need some seasoning. Black beat the gold and gold was mainly the starters but the black team had Nikki Marshall and two men playing for them and the guys scored 2 of the goals for the black. Hanson and Grust looked good in net. Grust has some J.J. in her as she talks all the time. The transfer from Memphis is 3rd string.

I too was at the scrimmage and will second what Bmixer stated above ^^^. In the attack this team looks like it will produce a lot of scoring chances and will be considerably better than last season's team in this department. Lots of depth both at forward and in the midfield. And remember that Jenny Beyer is away with the German U-20 national team until sometime late this month.

Newcomers scored all but one of the goals that weren't scored by the men who were guest players. Shyra James was the only veteran to score. Transfer Civana Kuhlman scored the first goal about 30 seconds into the match. In general, all the newcomers looked good to very good. They were confident on the ball and comfortable in the system.

Midfielders Ellen Jones and Hannah Duguid both looked to run and run at the defense causing problems.

Five days till the first match that counts.

Continuing from my previous statements, here are some other thoughts and observations:

• It appears the team is healthy going into the season. Defender Hannah Cardenas who hasn't had a fully healthy season since her freshman year looked good on the ball and played the entire match without a knee brace. Looks like she will be in the rotation at center back with Hannah Sharts and Phoenix Miranda.

• Not many long balls in the scrimmage, rather the midfielders were used to advance the ball or the ball was quickly played to the wing to get behind the defense.

• I was standing next Civana Kuhlmann's father during the scrimmage and he related the story of how she came to CU. Turns out she was recovering from the latest in a string of injuries and didn't think she would be recovered fully by this fall. When she realized she was recovered she reached out to CU and Danny Sanchez and was able to join the squad for this fall. Sounds like it really was an eleventh hour development. She's gonna be a difference maker.

yeah. CU got lucky that she recovered faster than expected and she will make a difference.

(I will create a separate match thread for these around when cubuffs.com releases its preview article.)

I have stated that CU's home non-conference opponents are weak while the three away matches are going to bee really tough. Here the non-conference opponents' RPIs from 2021:

CU Soccer Opponents RPIs from '21

Weber State 211

San Diego 146

Valparaiso 207

@ BYU 9

Texas A&M - Commerce ?

Omaha 174

@ Michigan 5

@ Michigan State 58

Denver 84

Colorado’s RPI was 56 at the end of last season.

Jenny Beyer started and played the full 90 as a center back in Germany's 0-1 loss to Mexico which knocked them out of the tourney. This means Beyer should be back in Boulder soon. Hope she had a great experience despite the disappointing results.
