2022/23 SOCCER general off-season news thread (Soccer Ball (benefit) 8/19; 1st match hosting Northern Colo. 8/17.)

About 1-1/2 hours until the battle with the corn is scheduled to begin. (And, wanted to emphasize that, as always planned, today's scrimmage is at Kittredge and NOT Prentup Field.)

Looks like renovations are beginning (assuming lights and/ or ???) at Prentup, with work evidently also being done to improve the ski and track and field teams' facilities on East Campus.

A temperature of twenty-eight degrees and light snow falling greeted players and fans at Farrand Field for CU’s final spring game, which just happened to be against Nebraska. (For those not familiar with CU sports culture, the level of hatred towards Big Red is generally at DEFCON 1.)

Note that Farrand Field is not the soccer team’s home. It’s a multipurpose field that is the home of the lacrosse team.

CU won, 4-3 and generally had the better of the play. The Buffs were in a 4-4-2 with a diamond in the midfield which is a change from previous seasons where Sanchez preferred a 4-3-3. According to a parent I chatted with, the goal is to play more on the ground and the Buffs have recruited players in recent years that can do so.

CU’s first three goals were scored by senior-to-be Shyra James with the final by sophomore-to-be Sophia Petrov.

Given the conditions on the artificial turf there was bound to be mistakes and both would concede goals that might not otherwise have been. This also made it challenging to assess the teams.

It looks like all the Buffs on the current roster played in the game with the exception of Mallory Allen and Jordan Nytes.

"
BOULDER – Colorado soccer wrapped up its spring season with a jampacked weekend that included its final match of the season, the team's annual year-end banquet and an exciting groundbreaking ceremony.

The Buffaloes opened the weekend with a 4-3 defeat of Nebraska as part of Saturday's Black & Gold Day festivities. Shyra James scored three first-half goals and Sophia Petrov tacked one on in the second half to send the Cornhuskers packing.

The match capped off the spring that included wins over Wyoming and Kansas State. The Buffaloes also defended their Colorado Cup title, downing Denver in the championship match.

"It was a fantastic spring for the Buffs," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "We had some very good performances in our spring matches. We feel our squad really developed individually. We couldn't be more excited to get everyone back later this summer. Added excitement is all the improvements happening at Prentup Field. It will be a game changer for our current student-athletes, our recruits and our fan atmosphere."

The Buffs also celebrated the 2022 season on Sunday hosting the annual awards banquet at the Rooftop Lounge of the Champions Center.

2022 Team Awards
MVP –
Civana Kuhlmann
Offensive MVP – Shyra James
Defensive MVP – Hannah Cardenas
Herbst Academic Award – Alyssa Duke
Strength & Conditioning Award – Jade Babcock-Chi
Newcomer of the Year – Juliauna Hayward
...

The Buffs shifted venues to Prentup Field on Sunday afternoon for a cerimonial groundbreaking. When Colorado takes the field next fall it will be with major improvements with the most noticeable change being the addition of lights.

From this article in the Daily Camera on construction at CU's East Campus (not in the sports section)

"add lighting, a sound system and replace the irrigation system and natural turf at Prentup Field."

"Adding amenities like lights to Prentup Field and new concession areas also has benefits for spectators as well, creating a great game experience for fans and student-athletes alike.”

really good to see them put some money into those facilities. Prenup could be a great venue for the fans for soccer if they continue to upgrade it. Its about time they upgraded Potss and Kitt as well

Agree. The next step is to build a proper stadium, which apparently RG wants to do in the future (it were which means they face into the sun which can be brutal in August and September. Now, with the lights it won't be as much of a problem on weeknight games, but there are still matches on Sunday afternoons.

I believe they were planning to (since neither was included in this past season's senior day celebration), but great confirmation that these 2 starting midfielders (in the majority of their matches played last season) are planning to gome back for their 5th (Covid) years!

Hope Amaya Gonzalez and Jade Babcock-Chi have great 2023 seasons with the team!

(Note- I had put the below tweet in the recruiting thread possibly signifying a NEW Buff arrival, but assume it may have actually referred to the above BIG addition by NON-subtraction.

)

Some thoughts on the soccer schedule which is on the above ^^^ post.

• The stadium upgrades include lights, and it seems they will be ready to go in August as all Thursday home matches beginning Aug. 17 are scheduled to kickoff at 7pm.

• On paper the non-conference schedule looks to be more challenging than in recent years. Something that I thought has been an issue in preparing for a tough Pac 12 schedule.

• The Buffs play six straight at home to open the season and only two road games before hosting UCLA to start Pac 12 play.

Also, 13 new players on the roster this season including 4 transfers.

since the transfer thread does not show up for me as the ad seems to cover it up it looks like the team lost some players this spring. Grust, Liester and petrov are the ones I noticed not being on next years roster

Good catch. These three were on thee team in the spring. These transfer probably explains the players coming to the program in the last few weeks.

Bella Grust most likely was going to have a hard time earning significant time in goal with Jordan Nytes transferring in from Oklahoma State where she was co-goal keeper of the year in the Big 12 last season as a freshman.

The US Women's World Cup roster was announced today and Taylor Kornieck didn't make it. For the WC teams are only allowed 23 on the roster and thus it was going to be tough for Taylor to get the calll. Hopefully she'll get more call-ups over the next four years and make the roster.

It's now 1 month until soccer open up its 2023 season (and opens up the academic year sports slate for ALL CU sports), this year against UNC. And, as usual, one of the 1st indications of an upcoming season (and indicates the team has all "reported in for duty") is team picture day, which looks to have maybe taken place earlier today.
