With tennis being one of those Buff sports (along with men's and women's golf) that competes in MANY tournaments in both the fall and spring semesters, I wanted to set up a thread that as normal we can use to cover anything that comes up on and off the court up until the post-season begins with the Pac 12 Championships in late April.

I'm starting this thread now as I see the team at the beginning of the month released its current fall (its preseason preseason) schedule.

I assume the main (spring) season schedule will be released later. Per https://pac-12.com/2022-23-pac-12-conference-championships-schedule , it looks like, as usual, the conference championships are scheduled to be held in Ojai, CA, with this academic year's scheduled to run from April 26-29, 2023.

A couple main links:

Per the schedule, the 1st tournament is in San Francisco from Sept. .22nd-24th.

Article about the fall season schedule, and brief introduction to this year's team - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/9/1/tennis-buffaloes-release-fall-schedule.aspx

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's tennis announced six competitions this week for the upcoming 2022 fall season.

The Buffaloes will begin in San Francisco at the Battle In The Bay Classic before heading south for the San Diego USTA Intercollegiate. CU will then compete at the ITA All-American Championships and the Colorado State Invite at the end of September before competing in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. Colorado ends the fall season in the Colorado Cup the first week of November.

Colorado enters the second season under head coach Anthony Pham, who returns four players from last years squad. Antonia Balzert and Ellen Puzak are the returning upperclassmen along with sophomores Mila Stanojevic and Betina Tokac. Colorado all added four signees, two true freshmen in Carri Hayes and Anya Nelson along with a pair of transfers in Aya El Sayed and Elys Ventura.

"This fall, we are excited to give our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the best collegiate players in the country," said Pham. "The ladies have done a really nice job with coming out of the gates strong in training and fitness. We will continue to be hyper-focused on daily development in order to prepare ourselves for the rigors of a competitive spring schedule."

The season begins Sept. 22 in San Francisco where the Buffs sent four upperclassmen last season. The team will hope to return to the ITA All-American Championships after sending three athletes last season, but will have the entire squad competing either there or at CSU.

The first two trips to California also provide an opportunity for the Buffs as the winner of the tournaments will earn a wildcard into professional tournaments.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's tennis team heads to San Francisco to take part in The Battle in the Bay Classic starting Thursday.

Colorado will send senior Antonia Balzert, who had nine singles wins in duals last season, as well as junior Aya El Sayed. El Sayed competed for New Jersey Institute of Technology last season and had a 19-7 record.

The Buffaloes are looking to improve from last year in the second season under head coach Anthony Pham. Colorado picked up three ranked wins last season, the most since 2015.

Balzert and El Sayed will compete in singles and as a doubles team this weekend with the first day being singles play only, followed by a day of both and finishing with a doubles-only day. Last season the Buffs send three athletes and finished with a 2-4 record in singles play with a 1-4 record in doubles play.

The rest of the squad will pick up action next week when the team splits with four athletes heading to San Diego and the other four heading to CSU.
"

Congrats to new (transfer) Buff Aya El Sayed for a nice start to her season. Now sounds like the whole team will be in action for this 1st time (this academic year) this coming weekend either in San Diego or at CSU.

SAN FRANCISCO — Colorado tennis transfer Aya El Sayed secured the Battle In The Bay Classic singles consolation championship here Sunday to close out her first weekend as a Buff.

El Sayed took on Tomi Main of Pacific in the final singles match for Colorado. The junior took the opening set 6-4, then fell in the second in a close 7-5 set. El Sayed outlasted her opponent 10-4 in the prostyle tiebreaker.

El Sayed showed resilience all weekend, competing in three-set in all but one of her five matches. Both her and Antonia Balzert played tough, winning at least one set against every opponent they faced.

Balzert's singles exhibition match was not competed, but her and El Sayed played against Main and her teammate in a doubles exhibition match. The Buff duo took the win 6-4.

"We got exactly what we hoped to get out of this weekend," said head coach Anthony Pham. "Played a ton of tennis against high level competition and it was encouraging to see us get better match to match. Proud of the way both Aya and Toni competed. We will take a couple of days to rest and recover and look forward to getting back after it next weekend. Go Buffs!"

The Buffaloes separate into two squads next week with Betina Tokac, Carri Hayes, Anya Nelson and Ellen Puzak competing in CSU while Balzert, El Sayed, Elys Ventura and Mila Stanojevic head to San Diego.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's tennis team will send four athletes to the San Diego Intercollegiate Invitational starting this Thursday and the other four to the Jon Messick Invitational at CSU which begins on Friday.

The four Buffaloes heading to the west coast are Antonia Balzert, Aya El Sayed, Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura. The crew heading to CSU will be Betina Tokac, Carri Hayes, Anya Nelson and Ellen Puzak.

Colorado's Balzert was also invited to the ITA All-American Championships that begin this weekend in North Carolina but will be heading to the opposite coast with her teammates instead.

The Buffaloes are full of new faces with only half the team returning from last year's season. One new face, El Sayed, impressed last weekend taking the Battle In The Bay Classic consolation singles championship. The junior transfer won four matches, two over Pac-12 opponents. She and Balzert combined for a 5-3 record in singles with all but one match heading into three sets.

The schedule in San Diego will begin on Thursday with a round of 32 in doubles and two rounds of singles in the 64-woman tournament. Friday will have a pair of doubles rounds and extra matches will begin as the tournament winds down to the final pairings.

At CSU, Friday's start will feature a pair of doubles rounds and a round of singles, then flip to a round of doubles and two rounds of singles Saturday.

This will be the final weekend of competition for the tennis program before the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas October 12-16.

LAS VEGAS – The Colorado women's tennis program had an action-packed day here Wednesday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships.

Looks like the team is going to get a dedicated training camp to start their main (spring) season.

(Their future schedule so far only shows their Pac 12 matches, the 1st of which is a home match against Stanford on March 3rd. I'd guess, however, other matches will be added before that date.)

As I mentioned in my last post, when I last looked, the team's schedule in cubuffs.com wasn't complete for this coming spring season.

That has now changed, and it shows that the Buffs have 2 matches this week, hosting Weber State Friday, and heading down to Air Force Sunday.

BOULDER—The Colorado Buffaloes women's tennis team opens its spring 2023 season Friday with Weber State visiting Boulder for a Noon match up at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

It marks the start of the second spring season for head coach Anthony Nguyen Pham, and his roster features four returning players from his first season, two sophomores and two seniors, and four newcomers, two transfers and two freshmen.

The team spend last week training in California to take advantage of the warmer weather ahead of the start of classes on campus. The team used the trip to train and prepare for the a solid spring season ahead.

"Our schedule is a good one this year, very competitive," Pham said. "We have a lot of opportunities early on and through the Pac-12 slate. The expectations are that we ended last year well and we want to keep that momentum going."

The Buffs ended the 2022 spring season by knocking off two ranked Pac-12 teams in April and playing several others down to the wire as the season ended with six straight matches against ranked teams. The Buffs swept No. 67 Denver and beat No. 49 Arizona down the stretch while taking No. 37 Oregon down to the wire in a 4-3 loss at the Pac-12 Tournament.

This fall, the Buffs continued that momentum with several solid individual performances, including newcomer Aya El Sayed securing the consolation title at the Battle in the Bay Classic while senior Antonia Balzert advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Regionals, where Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura also advanced to the semifinals in doubles action.

Pham is excited about this years team with the leadership of Balzert and fellow senior Ellen Puzak, and the continued improvement of sophomores Stanojevic and Betina Tokac, who both showed promise last season by defeating three Pac-12 opponents down the stretch. The addition of El Sayed and Ventura as transfers and two young talents in Carri Hayes and Anya Nelson, and Pham believes his team has the right chemistry to make some noise.

"We have four returning players, as well as four newcomers," Pham said. "I am really happy with how this team has been growing both on and off the court. I think there's a lot of opportunities for us this year. If we can stay healthy, I think we have a good chance to do some good things this spring."

But Pham said that competition is always key and there are no spots secured at this time. He will always put the players in the best position for the team to be successful and that may mean week to week that changes occur in the lineups.

"I was just telling the team the other day, nothing for us is ever set in stone," Pham said. As you go through the season, things ebb and flow. We expect everyone to play a pivotal role this season. The players returning on the team, Antonia, Ellie, Betina, and Stanojevic know what to expect from our standpoint. They know where we have been and where we are trying to get to."

The path to find out where this team can get to begins Friday with the Wildcats visiting Boulder. Weber State is coming off a 14-9 season that saw them win the Big Sky Conference regular season title.

Fans can attend the match at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center, otherwise known as "The Bubble" behind the Millennium Hotel. Parking for the match is available off of Taft Drive. From Folsom Ave., turn east on Taft and then turn left into the parking lot as Taft turns to the right. Park close to the bubble and enter on the North side (away from the Boulder Creek).

A win to start this season!

BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado Buffaloes Women's Tennis team has a quick turnaround between the first and second matches of the Spring season and will be in action Sunday, traveling down to Colorado Springs for a 5:00 p.m. match against Air Force.

The Buffaloes are coming off of a dominating 6-1 victory in their first action of the spring season Friday against Weber State. Head Coach Anthony Pham was pleased with how his team came out and battled against nerves and some rust from the break since the fall season. Pham and the team will spent
Saturday cleaning up a few things to make sure they are ready for Sunday.

On Friday the team was led by Senior Antonia Balzert and Junior Aya El Sayed in the No. 1 doubles positions as well as the No. 1 Singles and No. 4 singles respectively. The duo got off to a fast start in doubles with a 6-2 victory. They followed that up with two very impressive wins in singles, though they looked a little different. Balzert after losing the first set came back and won the next two sets in an emotional fashion. With three points already secured El Sayed dominated her match winning in two sets clinching a victory for the Buffaloes.

Last season the Buffaloes took on Air Force in Boulder towards the end of the spring season and came away with a 4-2 victory against the Falcons. Colorado returns three athletes who scored points in the win last season, Antonia Balzert in No. 2 singles, Mila Stanojevic in No. 3 Singles, and Betina Tokac in No. 5 singles.

Balzert is excited to travel and continue growing the team chemistry on the road, as well as getting a chance to compete against one of the in state rivals in Air Force.

"Playing Air Force is always interesting because they are so close to us, they're our rivals. Balzert said. "We beat them last time, so we better do that again. I'm excited, it's going to be fun."

Air Force had their first dual of the spring season on Saturday, also against Weber State. Air Force lost to Weber State 4-3.

"Air Force always plays good doubles, so hats off to them. We did a great job responding and engaging for four sets. It's always tricky playing here."

"Everybody did a great job tonight, just responding. You're going to win some of those points, lose some of those points, and it helps when you win a doubles point. But it shows even with us dropping the doubles point we can respond in singles. We did a good job of letting that part of the match go and focusing on singles.

"At this point we respect every team we play. Denver has always had a very good program and I don't think this year is any different. We look forward to playing a good match and keep improving."

Aya El Sayed
"I thought the day went pretty good. I'm honestly really happy with how it ended, so I'm glad with how everybody responded. We had to push that doubles point aside and everyone was focusing on every single match and we were trying to win as fast as possible so everybody could move on.

"We have very good team chemistry this year and I'm excited to see how the season goes."

BOULDER, Colo. - The Colorado Buffaloes Women's Tennis team hits the road for its only match of the week on Sunday, traveling to take on Denver at 10:30 a.m. MST at the Denver Tennis Park.

Newcomer Elys Ventura has loved her time in Colorado since transferring from Missouri in August. Ventura played three years at Missouri but still has two years to play for the Buffs due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. At Missouri she had her best year as a freshman going 17-8 overall, 4-0 at the No.2 position, the same position she has been competing at early in the spring season.

"It's definitely been an interesting transition," Ventura said. "It's a different team chemistry here. I feel like we're best friends with one another. We always hang out; we look to support each other every time we're on court and off the court so it's been really great so far."

Ventura had a good start this fall going an overall 15-7 between singles and doubles. Even with an adjustment to new teammates and coaches, the results on the court remained high winning five of her first six matches as a Buff. At the ITA Mountain Regionals Ventura and teammate Mila Stanojevic made it to the semifinals before losing a tight match in a third set tiebreaker. In the singles side Ventura made it to the round of 16.

The spring season got off to a hot start for the team and Ventura has been a big reason why. She is off to a 2-0 start to the season at No. 2 singles, winning both matches in straight sets, as well as a victory at the No. 2 doubles with teammate Mila Stanojevic against Weber State to help secure the first doubles point of the season. One of the reasons for the success early in the spring season has been due to an improved approach towards matches.

"I really like how I've been approaching things." Ventura said. "I haven't been really looking at the results. I've just focused on the process and trying to get better every point and every practice. I think just focusing on the process has helped me a lot."

Ventura will look to continue her hot start this Sunday against Denver. Earlier this fall Ventura went 2-1 overall against Denver opponents with a singles win and one doubles victory with Stanojevic as her partner.

"We've played a several Denver girls, and I think every time we play them it is really good competition," Ventura said. "I just hope everyone's as competitive as it was last time, and hopefully everyone can support one another like we did last time."

The Buffs will look to start 3-0 for the first time since 2019-20 this Sunday with the match scheduled to be played at the Denver Tennis Park. They look to get a second straight dual victory over Denver, after last year's 4-0 upset against what was the No. 67 ranked team in the country.
In that match last season, Antonia Balzert, Ellen Puzak, Stanojevic and Betina Tokac all picked up wins in either singles or doubles in the Buffs sweep.
This will be the 51st matchup between the two schools with the Buffs holding 33-17 advantage all-time. But since 2004, the Pioneers hold a 13-6 advantage.

The team is on a quick road trip in Eastern Washington today, with back to back matches vs. Gonzaga and then Eastern Washington. (As I type this, the last tweet below makes it look like a very tight battle as the Buffs and Zags fight for the double point.)

BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado Buffaloes Women's Tennis team travels to Spokane Washington for
back to back matches against Gonzaga and Eastern Washington on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. MST.

The team is currently off to the best start since the 2020-21 season at 3-1, in large part due to the
addition of Junior transfer Aya El Sayed. El Sayed transferred from the New Jersey Institute of
Technology after her sophomore year and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Since arriving at Colorado, El Sayed has made a big impact in the tennis program. In her first tournament
as a Buff, El Sayed won the Battle In the Bay Consolation Championship. During that run El Sayed battled
winning all but one match in three sets.

She has continued her strong start as a Buff this spring starting the season 3-1 at No. 4 singles, winning
all of her matches in straight sets. Along with the wins in dominating fashions, El Sayed has been clutch,
clinching two of the three wins so far this season for the Buffs. None bigger than the last match against
San Francisco with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory clinched the match in a 4-3 victory for the Buffs.

As well as starting strong in singles, El Sayed looks to form a potent doubles duo with Senior Antonia
Balzert. After going 5-5 during the fall, the duo has started to figure out how to play together this spring
after getting a convincing 6-3 win against San Francisco in their last match. The duo will look to continue
the winning ways this weekend in Washington.

The Buffs will travel to Washington for an unconventional back to back matches this Saturday against
Gonzaga and Eastern Washington. They will start the day with Gonzaga at 9:00 a.m. MST. The Buffs will
look to stay undefeated against Gonzaga, currently standing 2-0 with the last victory coming last year in
Boulder 5-2. Mila Stanojevic won at No. 2 singles last year 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, while Ellen Puzak got the last
point of the day at No. 6 singles winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. As well as current No. 3 doubles team Ellen
Puzak and Betina Tokac won at the same position 6-2 to help clinch the doubles point.

Directly following the match against Gonzaga, the Buffs will take on Eastern Washington. In only one
matchup in 2017, the Buffs won the match 6-1.

"This will be our first true road trip," coach Anthony Pham said. "We played Air force and Denver, but
those were day trips. We will make sure we address some of the things that we saw against San
Francisco and do a better job in practice this week. We will make sure we are ready to battle against a
good Gonzaga and Eastern Washington team. Playing a double header is going to be unique, so we will
need to be ready for that."

Colorado will look to start the season 5-1 for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

A couple home matches this weekend for the tennis Buffs, as they're scheduled to host BYU tomorrow evening (beginning at 6:00 PM) and then Indiana at 10:00 AM Sunday.

Note - For anyone looking to attend, looks like their home INDOOR courts are currently the Meadows Club (at 5555 Raquet Lane, Boulder 80303. (I've only attended indoor matches in past years at the Harvest House (which I guess is now the Homewood Suites by Hilton?).)
