The last CU teams still in action this academic year, the men's and women's outdoor track and field squads, begin their post-season (which doesn't end until 6/11 at the NCAA Championships for some of the national level hopefuls) this weekend in Eugene, as the Ducks (as usual) host the 2022 Pac 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
(Looks like the Pac 12 has upped it's video game at least a little, as unlike last year there are at least plans to show the finals for the few races (10000M Friday night and 3000M steeple Saturday night. Although, similar to what I wrote last year, still a bummer their is no plans to show the multi-events on Friday or Saturday, or to show any of the prelim races on those days.)

Go Buffs!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program heads to the 2022 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships this Friday May 13 through Sunday May 15 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Action begins Friday at 2 p.m. MT with the decathlon and heptathlon competitions, then continues through the evening with prelims on the track and close out the night with the men's 10,000 finals at 9:15 p.m. MT. Saturday will close out the multis and continue prelims before finishing up with the women's steeplechase finals at 7 p.m. The meet enters full swing Sunday with finals on the track beginning at 2 p.m. MT and running through 5:10 p.m.

Numerous Buffs are seeking their first Pac-12 title as Madie Boreman is the only Buff to have done so on the current team. Boreman won the 2017 Pac-12 steeplechase title and will look to repeat in her final opportunity Saturday evening. She is currently ranked third in the Pac-12.

The only Buff ranked as the top competitor in an event is Abby Nichols who leads the NCAA in the women's 5,000. Nichols is entered in the 5,000 final Sunday but will open the weekend in the 10,000 along with Emily Covert and India Johnson who are tied for second in the Pac-12. All three have strong chances of taking the title and will prelude the men who will be led by Charlie Sweeney and Andrew Kent. Sweeney is ranked sixth in the Pac-12 in the 10,000.

Other top-ranked athletes competing this weekend include 2022 NCAA Mile National Champion Micaela DeGenero who will race in the 800 and 1,500. She is ranked third in the 800 and seventh in the 1,500. Joining her in the 1,500 is Rachel McArthur and Boreman as the Buffs have four women in the top-10 in the Pac-12 1,500 rankings. Nichols, who is ranked sixth, will not race in the 1,500.

On the men's side, Eduardo Herrera will try at two Pac-12 titles in the 1,500 and 5,000. Herrera is ranked third in the Pac-12 in the 1,500 and second in the 5,000 this season. He will be joined by Noah Hibbard in the 1,500 and will be one of eight men in the 5,000 including Sweeney and Kent doubling back from the 10,000.

Two women round out Buffs ranked in the top-three with Abbey Glynn ranked third in the 400 hurdles and Avery McMullen ranked third in the heptathlon. Glynn will need to drop a second to try and win a Pac-12 title in the hurdles as two athletes from Oregon and Arizona have gone under 56.50 this season. In the heptathlon, it could take a school record performance to win the title. McMullen trails Ida Eikeng of Washington in the rankings by 250 points. The top-four women in the heptathlon all earned their marks at the Mt. SAC Relays with Eikeng in the lead at 5,916 to McMullen's 5663. The CU school record owned by Annette Tannander in 1983 is 5,863 points.

The women are seeking a strong finish in the Pac-12 Championship with numerous opportunities for not only championships, but points. Colorado has 18 women ranked in the top-10 in their events, not including Nichols in the 10,000 who hasn't run one yet this season, and a pair of strong relays in the 4x100 and 4x400. If the Buffs finish at their current rankings, they would finish with 79 points (excluding Nichols in the 10,000), the second-most for the CU women in the past five championships. The women since 2017 have a pair of third-place finishes, a fourth-place finish and a fifth-place finish with an average points scored at 80 with a high of 92 points in 2019.

Most event finals will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, Pac-12 Now app and Pac-12.com. Friday's coverage will have the women's hammer throw, both javelin and pole vault competitions and the 10,000 finals. Saturday's coverage will have the men's hammer, all of the long jump and shot put finals and the steeplechase finals, while all events Sunday will be televised.

From the preview linked to above, here is the current schedule for the Buffs entered. (Of course, for those track races with prelims (anything shorter than the 3000M steeple), only those who qualify for finals will actually be racing on Sunday.)

In addition to I assume the main purpose of these athletes being competing for "conference pride", this meet also constitutes the last opportunity for athletes to obtain or solidify their top season marks for qualifying for the NCAA Preliminaries scheduled to begin Wednesday, 5/25. Because of this, wanted to paste the below qualifying info in this thread (pulled from the regular season thread)-

"
(Note- I just largely copied the below about qualifying for NCAA preliminaries from what I wrote/ quoted in 2019's outdoor T&F thread, with the main changes being updating the links to season's best to the current year's results.)

Edit- Wanted to add links to the official webpages where outdoor season bests are kept. • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 marks, distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships.
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times who accept entry in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.

Solid day so far for the Buffs, with all 3 multi-event athletes in the points ~1/2 way through their competition, all 5 1500M CU entries (3 women and 2 men) having advanced, and another 4 (2 for each gender) have advanced in the 400M hurdles.

The 1st chance for Buff points is now on deck as the women's 10000M should be starting any minute. (Coverage on the Pac 12 Networks and Pac 12 app.)

The Buffs get the W in the women's 10000M in meet record fashion- congrats to Abby Nichols!

CU also ends up with a big overall point haul in the race, with Covert joining Nichols on the podium with her 3rd place finish, while Johnson and freshman Minuitti also scoring in 6th and 8th places! (Believe that equals 20 points overall.)

The Buff men also have a solid 10000M race, with 3 scoring points (in 4th (Kent), 5th (sophomore Vancil) and 7th (Sweeney)), and the top 2 also easily earn NCAA qualifying marks. (the 3rd already had a solid qualifying time.)

Re Ms. Nichols, her time was evidently also a CU record! (It's also the top time in the NCAA so far this season by ~7 seconds.)

EUGENE – The University of Colorado track and field senior Abby Nichols captured the women's 10,000-meter Pac-12 Championship here Friday evening, breaking the Pac-12 Championship record and CU school record in the process.

Nichols, who hasn't run a 10,000 this season, won the event in 32:27.25 seconds. She sat in second for most of the race then put down a 66-second last lap to not only win the title but also break the Pac-12 Championship record by 10 seconds.

Her mark breaks the CU record held by Makena Morley and takes the NCAA lead, giving her the lead in both the 10,000 and 5,000.

This was Nichols' first 10,000 since last year's NCAA Championships where she had to pull out of the race halfway through due to an injury.

Also in the race and under the previous Pac-12 record was Emily Covert finishing third while running 32:30.82 which is good for third in CU history. India Johnson finished sixth in 33:01.89, good for sixth in CU history, and Hannah Miniutti finished eighth to round out the scoring for the Buffs.

In the men's race, Andrew Kent and Austin Vancil finished fourth and fifth, running 28:15.06 and 28:16.62, respectfully. The marks are good for third and fourth in CU history. Charlie Sweeney ran 28:46.06 to finish seventh while Brandon Fraser finished one position out of scoring in ninth at 29:03.02.

The day started with Avery McMullen and Jada Green on the first day of the women's heptathlon. McMullen finished the four events in second just 90 points back from Stanford's Allie Jones. Green is currently in eighth. McMullen placed top-five in every event and started with a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles at 13.87 seconds. Green had a high finish of third in the shot put at 11.85 meters (38-10.5).

On the men's side, Nick Bianco finished the first day sixth, 772 points back from Oregon's Max Vollmer. Bianco closed the day finishing fourth in the 400 in 51.52 seconds.

Moving to the track, Colorado started the prelims sweeping the women's 1,500 heats with Micaela DeGenero taking the second heat in the best overall time of 4;17.46, while Rachel McArthur took out the first heat at 4:20.41. Madie Boreman also moved on to finals finishing fourth in the second heat in 4:18.17 seconds, good for seventh.

On the men's side, Noah Hibbard and Eduardo Herrera also qualified through to finals. Hibbard was the 11th qualifier and Herrera was the final qualifier with the two running 3:42.74 and 3:43.13, respectfully. Herrera will now race the finals of the 1,500 and 5,000 Sunday.

Moving to the 400 hurdles, Abbey Glynn won the third heat in 59.94 seconds to automatically qualify for finals, while freshman Emma Pollak finished second in the first heat at 60.73 to move on to finals. The men repeated the process with Aaron McCoy winning the first heat in the fastest time in prelims of 51.52 seconds. Garrett Nelson, who was fourth in the same heat, qualified through with the seventh-best time at 52.58 seconds. Kellen Monestime and Eli Heitmann both finished 10th and 11th, one and two spots out of finals.

The Buffs continue action tomorrow with the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon, prelims in the rest of the events and finals in the men's hammer throw, men's long jump and women's steeplechase.
...
"

The Buffs women are now 2 for 2 in winning distance races, as long-time (believe she arrived in Boulder the summer of 2016) Buff Maddie Boreman sets her new PR and gets the win in the steeplechase!

Fellow Buff junior Gabrielle (Elle) Orie also nets a PR and contributes 3 points with her 6th place finish!

(Note- the 1st tweet below did flip a couple numbers on her time - Ms. Boreman's winning time was 9:42.22.)

_______________________________________________________________________

The Buffs also had solid results in the multi's, led by sophomore Avery McMullen finishing 2nd and junior Jada Green 6th on the women's heptathlon, while sophomore Nick Bianco finishes 5th in the men's decathlon!
_______________________________________________________________________

A couple Buffs also successfully completed their prelim efforts to advance to tomorrow's finals - sophomore Tyler Williams in the men's 400M dash, as well as grad student Micaela DeGenero in the 800M. (Assuming she's feeling up to it, tomorrow looks like a busy day for Ms. DeBenero, as she already qualified yesterday for tomorrow's 1500M final.)

EUGENE – University of Colorado track and field senior Madie Boreman picked up her second Pac-12 Championship here Saturday, winning the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and returning the title back to Colorado.

Boreman, who won the steeplechase title in 2017 as a freshman, ran a personal best 9:42.22 to take the win. She sat in third and fourth for most of the race, then dropped a 71-second lap to reclaim the title. Her last lap was four seconds faster than any other lap in the race.

The Pac-12 women's steeplechase title returns to the Buffs, who prior to last year had won every single women's title since joining the conference. Boreman beat out last year's champion and Polish Olympian Aneta Konieczek who finished third overall. Boreman also leaped a pair of Pac-12 women in the overall NCAA lists, posting the fifth-best time in the NCAA this season.

Also in the race, Gabrielle Orie ran 10:03.54 to finish sixth overall and earn her spot into the NCAA Preliminaries. Her mark is good for 27th in the NCAA prior to this weekend's meets.

The day started with the second day of the decathlon and heptathlon competitions. Avery McMullen started the day by winning the women's long jump with a jump of 5.85 meters (19-2.5). She took the lead in the overall standings heading into the javelin before Stanford's Allie Jones retook the lead. In the final event, McMullen finished seventh in 2:23.90, three positions behind Jones who took the heptathlon title with 5,731 points. McMullen finished as the runner-up with 5,576 points, while Jada Green finished sixth with 5,312 points.

In the decathlon, Nick Bianco closed out the 10-event competition sixth overall with 6,652 points. Bianco's best event was the pole vault where he tied for first with three other athletes at 4.61 meters (15-1.5).

In the final day of track prelims, Micaela DeGenero qualified in the women's 800-meter run, winning her heat in 2:05.40. She will race tomorrow in the women's 1,500 championship and then have a 50-minute break before the 800 finals.

While DeGenero was the only woman to advance to finals today, a pair of men advanced from the sprints and hurdle squad. Tyler Williams ran the 400-meter dash in 46.31 seconds to advance with the seventh-best mark. His time was also the eighth-best time in CU history. His teammate Kellen Monestime ran 14.56 seconds in the men's 110 hurdles to advance with the eighth qualifying position.

Tomorrow the Buffs will have the busiest day in the meet with 32 student-athletes in individual final events, along with some doubling or even tripling up with individual events and relays. The busiest athletes in terms of the number of races are Tyler Williams, Emma Pollak, Abbey Glynn, Aaron McCoy and Garrett Nelson who will all run in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays along with an individual event.

The women jumped into second with 44 points, trailing host Oregon by 16 points following Boreman's championship. The men are tied for eighth with 15 points.

Final day of the Championships, with Pac 12 Networks coverage beginning at 2:00 PM MT -

___________________________________________________________

Brief highlights of the 2 Buff wins so far are viewable in the below Instagram posts -

Another NICE day as the meet concludes, with the women earning their highest Pac 12 finish ever in 2nd, also reaching triple digit points (102.5) for the 1st time. (Per the article in the original post, their highest previous Pac 12 point total was 92.) The men also finished respectively in 8th with many good and gritty performances.

Individually, a LOT of toughness shown, especially in the distance running side, with many running doubles:
  • On the women's side today:
    • Abby Nichols earned her 2nd win of the meet in the 5000M, ending the meet as the Buff's biggest point producer, and of course solidifying her position as one of the favorites at the NCAA Championships.
    • Micaela DeGenero earned 1st in the 1500M then, less than an hour later, followed up with another podium (3rd place) finish in the 800M.
    • Also in the 1500M, Madie Boreman followed up her win last night in the steeplechase with a solid 4th place finish in the 1500M.
    • One of the younger distance Buffs, (3rd year) freshman Emily Covert, followed close behind Ms. Nichols in both races this meet, following up her 3rd place finish Friday in the 10000M with a 2nd place finish today in the 5000M.
    • In the 400M hurdles, a couple young Buffs, sophomore Abby Glynn and freshman Emma Pollak, also were big contributors, finishing 3rd and 5th, respectively. Ms. Glynn did triple duty today, finishing the meet as one of the four runners who earned a 5th place finish in the 4X400M relay. She and Ms. Pollack also were part of the day opening 4X100M relay, where CU finished 7th. (Two 400M runners, freshman Grace Jenkins and senior Jaida Drame, also ran in both relays, while sophomore hurdler Reese Renz was the 4th contributor in the 4X400M.)
    • Finishing off the scorers, I believe the only points earned in any field event by a woman this meet was by senior Kylee Harr (a Colorado (Aurora) native), who finished in a tie for 5th in the high jump.

  • On the men's side:
    • Eduardo Herrera joined Ms. DeGenero in earning MAJOR points in 2 tough races today, following up a 3rd place finish in the 1500M with a WIN in the 5000M that started less than 2 hours later.
    • Also in the 5000M, Andrew Kent duplicated his finish from Friday's 10000M with a 2nd 4th place finish for this meet.
    • In the 400M, sophomore Tyler Williams ran a PR enroute to a 5th place finish.
    • And, in the 400M hurdles, a couple Buffs had nice days, with Aaron McCoy finishing 3rd and sophomore Garrett Nelson running a PR to finish 5th.
    • Buffs also earned a few points in the relays, with a 4th place in the 4X400M and 8th in 4X100M. (Mr. Williams ran in both relays, as did sophomore Ian Gilmore. The aforementioned McCoy and Nelson also ran in the 4X400M, while the 4X100M relay also included sophomore sprinter Luc Andrada and veteran hurdler Kellen Monestime.)
    • As with the women, I believe the only points earned in the field events by a man this meet were in the high jump, where freshman Noah Bouchard had a nice 1st Pac 12's experience, finishing in 5th.
Go Buffs!

EUGENE – The University of Colorado women's track and field team placed second here Sunday afternoon in the 2022 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, led by double Pac-12 Champion Abby Nichols.

Nichols, who set a Pac-12 meet record Friday in the 10,000, doubled back to win the 5,000 in 15:47.92. Her 20 points helped lead the Buffs to 102.5 points, the most for CU in Pac-12 history, and secured the second-place finish for the women before the 4x400-meter relay, the highest finish for the Buffs at the Pac-12s.

Nichols began the race in fourth and sat there for most of the 12 and a half lap race. Teammate Emily Covert sat in sixth for most of the race as the 41-women pack spread out and dwindled down to seven. Oregon's Alessia Zarbo took the lead along with Utah's Cara Woolnough, but with 500-meters remaining Covert blasted to the front with Nichols on her heels.

The two Buffs picked up a 15-meter gap on the rest of the field in the home stretch leading to the bell, then a lap later Covert waved Nichols on to the win as the two picked up 18 points finishing 1-2 with Covert running 15:48.88.

Nichols is the first double champion for the Buffs since Dani Jones in 2017 in the 1,500 and 5,000. She becomes the first Buff to double in the 5k and 10k since Sara Slattery in 2005 on the women's side and Joe Bosshard in 2011 on the men's side.

The Colorado women took the title in four of the five distance races, taking the 10,000 and steeplechase titles Friday and Saturday with Madie Boreman winning the steeplechase late Saturday. The defending NCAA Mile National Champion Micaela DeGenero picked up the third distance title in the 1,500 earlier in the afternoon, winning the race in 4:13.26 seconds.

DeGenero, Boreman and Rachel McArthur all raced in the 1,500, the same squad that all finished as All-Americans in the mile in March. McArthur took the early lead for CU in fourth, followed by Boreman in eighth and DeGenero in ninth. As the race progressed, DeGenero moved to third with 700 meters left but fell back as the Buffs lined up sixth through eighth. Similar to the NCAA mile, DeGenero made her move with 600-meters remaining and kicked down Stanford's Christian Aragon with 250 meters remaining. She built up a 10-meter gap on the curve and cruised home to the finish. Boreman finished fourth in 4:16.93 while McArthur finished ninth in 4:20.23.

Colorado's distance squad was on full display late as Eduardo Herrera gave CU the 5,000-meter sweep, winning the men's title in 13:33.95. Herrera, Andrew Kent and Charlie Sweeny all sat three, four, five through the first 3,000. At the bell, Herrera sat second with Kent third, then Herrera passed Stanford's Ky Robinson on the backstretch. Cole Sprout of Stanford chased Herrera but Herrera pushed the gap to 10 meters to take the title, the first in his career on the track. The men picked up 15 points with Kent finishing fourth in 13:37.18 while Sweeney was ninth in 13:42.05.

Both Herrera and Nichols won the Pac-12 Cross Country individual championships and picked up their first Pac-12 track championships this weekend.

Numerous athletes doubled up and scored in both events, including DeGenero who came back to finish third in the women's 800 in 2:04.55. Herrera picked up the same number of points as DeGenero with his third-place finish in the 1,500 at 3:40.78.

The sprinters and hurdlers made their mark, with Tyler Williams, Aaron McCoy, Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak all picking up points in three events. All four ran in the 4x100-meter relays to start out their day with the women finishing seventh in 45.34, the fifth-best mark in CU history. The men finished eighth in 40.88 seconds.

Williams was the first from the group back on the track, running under 46-seconds in the 400 for the first time in his career. The Colorado-native finished fifth overall in 45.78 seconds. Not to be outdone, the hurdlers finished third and fifth in both the women's and men's 400-meter hurdle races. Abbey Glynn was the third-place finisher in 57.62 seconds, passing Eriana Henderson for second in CU history in the event. Freshman Emma Pollak finished fifth in 59.80 seconds. In the men's race, Aaron McCoy finished third in 51.29 seconds while Garrett Nelson finished fifth in 51.64 seconds.

All of them came back in the 4x400-meter relays where the women finished fifth in 3:41.44 seconds, while the men finished fourth running 3:06.67.

Both team titles went to host Oregon with the men winning their 15th-straight title with 161 points while the women won with 167 points. The CU men finished eighth with 61 points. The distance squad picked up 32 points across the five races on the men's side and 72 on the women's side, the most combined for any school in the conference with 104 points. Washington's distance squad was second with 85 points led by the men's best total of 47 points. The CU women's 20 points in the 10,000 was the most from any school in a single event on the track and third to Cal and Washington in the hammer throw and pole vault, respectfully, scoring 21 points in each event.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Wetmore

On The Meet
I would say overall men and women combined, we greatly exceeded my most optimistic expectations.

On The Distance Squads 104 Points
We're known for distances and I tell them this is the meet, this is the money meet, this is when you prove yourself. They came here ready to perform and almost all did.

On Having Six Championships
The women won every distance event other than 800 where Micaela got third 45 minutes after the 1,500 so the women were beautiful in those distance events. Lalo was excellent. His backup crew was great. Andrew Kent had a good weekend. The distance runners have a lot of expectations on them coming here, and for the most part they lived up to it. But, the women wouldn't have been second without the points from all the other event areas, so many of whom contributed.

On The Sprint Squad
Coach Bockman had a very good weekend. Same with the distance runners, his people came, they knew they'd have a lot of busy duty, a lot of hard running. They never complained, stepped to the line and got the job done. This is the meet, this is one of the only scored meets of the whole spring, it's the most important scored meet of the whole spring and the sprinters rose up.

On Madie Boreman
Well, last year was a bit disappointing for her and us in the steeplechase at the Pac-12. She spent a year working the hardest ever, making the most sacrifices ever, and got her title back. She should be very proud of that, we are.

On Abby Nichols
She had a great weekend, obviously. She's going to be one of the very few people who won two events, and she certainly won the two hardest events. I hope she's recognized for that. We have a month or more to go so we have to take a couple easy days, get back to work and try to do well at the nationals.

Associate Head Coach Heather Burroughs
On The Distance Squad
The distance runners, especially the women might have been the best we've ever seen at a conference meet. Five events and 72 points, four out of five champions. Couldn't have asked for more of them.

On What 104 Points Mean For The Distance Team
It means that when we tell them this weekend is important, they were listening. This is the weekend where they run their guts out for CU and I'm happy they were willing and able. Ready, willing and able.

On Madie Boreman
It's kind of a beautiful story because it's the same venue and the same event. She bookends the start and the end of her CU career with Pac-12 titles. If you kind of keep your head down and keep working hard, good stuff often happens. I think that's the lesson.

On Abby Nichols
Abby was a good runner last year, but she's at a whole different level this year. She's proved it all year, she proved it in cross country with a Pac-12 title and she's three for three in actual titles this year. We're not going to be able to replace her next year. We're going to miss her. I wish we had two more years with her.

Senior Abby Nichols
On Winning Two Titles
It was awesome. I mean, I can't ask anymore. I just had to come in and do what I had to do. I had amazing teammates next to me so I can't be more happy.

On What It Means After Withdrawing Last Year
It was really sad for me to withdrawal last year and I feel like I came back and I have had a lot I wanted to do. It's my last year so I'm just kind of going for it and taking the chances I have and just try and do my best. It just means so much to see the hard work pay off. You also just want to keep getting better too, so it's looking good going forward.

On What The Next Month Looks Like
I'm not really sure yet. I need to see what Mark and Heather think. Whatever they think I'm just going to trust and if that's doubling then I'll trust that and if it's choosing one I'll just have to go all in on one and not let the pressure get to me and just keep competing. I've been competing and going for wins.

On Having The Best Pac-12 Finish
It's amazing. I feel like I'm surrounded by so many amazing runners and everyone had to double this weekend. I didn't have that much pressure on me because everyone was doubling and everyone was going to get out there and do their best. I think maybe I led point wise, but I am surrounded by leaders and amazing people, so it's not just me.

Senior Madie Boreman
On Reclaiming The Pac-12 Title
I kind of knew going into it that it would be a full circle kind of feeling no matter how I finished. To come back and win it I honestly shocked myself. It's hard to put into words and I've had a day to process it and I still don't know how to explain it. I'm very excited.

On Lining Up With The Same Three Women From The NCAA Mile
That was cool to walk into another championship race and look down the line and have the field mainly be CU women. That's always a cool feeling. Especially when today it was all about getting points, so to be able to have three of us in, they're all in scoring positions and ready to go. That was really, really cool.

On Scoring The Most Points For CU At Pac-12s
We've been working at this for a long time and just waiting for all the right pieces to click. This year, we have heptathletes, we have sprints that are doing well and then to clean out all the distance events is awesome and this is the highest we've had obviously. That's really special and it kind of caps off a long three days of racing and makes it all worth it.

Senior Micaela DeGenero
On Lining Up With The Same Women As The NCAA Mile
It was a really special moment to be able to go into the final with my teammates. It's been a special season to get to share this with them and it's been really exciting. I'm really happy.

On The 800 Turnaround
It was a quick turnaround, but I was happy I was able to rally for the podium. It was a pretty good day overall.

On Running With And Against Abby Nichols
It's just really special. It's amazing to have success, but it's even more fun to get to share it with your best friends and your teammates.

Senior Eduardo Herrera
On Winning The Pac-12 Title
It means a lot to me, knowing that, this conference is probably one of the most competitive conferences in the nation. It's kind of a huge deal for me personally since I've been here for six years. Obviously, I caught the one in cross country last year and my goal at the beginning of the season was to capture one here outdoors for track and I came into this race a little worried. A little weight on my shoulders, thinking about it too much and kind of putting pressure on myself, but after that prelim on Thursday, I just kind of told myself 'Hey, you know what, just approach it as a regular race for the season and that's how I tend to do really well.' I do well in those races when it's not championship season, and so it was like a mental barrier for me. After that 1,500 meter final, I told Mark and Heather I'm going to win this thing, I feel really good. Im just happy overall, especially for my teammates, the women's team, they ran really amazing today. Proud of my guys, the boys here at CU, they ran really great.

On The Turnaround To The 5,000
It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was hurting the last 150, but it was one of those things where I knew it was going to be okay. During the season, even for indoors, after racing that 3k time that I ran, the mile time at 3:57, the race in Boulder, the race in Azusa, something I kind of noted, I felt like I can continue to do workouts after those races. Once I got done with the 1,500-meter final, I basically told myself I'm not going to conserve any energy in the 1,500, I'm just going to worry about the 1500 and then the 5k I'll worry about that later. When the time came as soon as the 1,500 final was done, all I could think about was just resting up for the 5k and just feeling good. Thankful for our trainer Koki for obviously taking care of me and all that stuff. I felt really good going into the 5,000, a little tired at the beginning but I think once I got into the rhythm everything just kind of disappeared and I was just dialed in and zoned into the race.

On The Month Ahead And Returning For NCAAs
We are leaving Pac-12s on a good note, obviously attacking regionals and qualifying and then coming back to Hayward and hopefully repeating the same thing and doing the same thing that we did today here as a team. I think a lot of us are trusting Mark and Heather, and we trust them and I know that we're all fit right now. Coming back here and doing what we did today, if not even better. We're definitely looking forward to that.

Congrats to Ms. Nichols!

SAN FRANCISCO – Colorado track and field senior Abby Nichols has been named the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.

Nichols captured both the 10,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run Pac-12 titles last weekend in Eugene, setting a Pac-12 meet record and CU school record in the 10,000 in the process at 32:27.25. She is the first-ever Colorado athlete to earn an individual Pac-12 Athlete of the Year award in track.

Nichols was one of two athletes on the track to score 20 points individually, but the only one to set a Pac-12 record in the process. She helped lead the CU women to a second-place finish with 102.5 team points, both the best mark for the Buffs in Pac-12 history.

In completing the double, Nichols became just the third woman in Pac-12 history to do so, joining two athletes from Oregon in 2010 and 1990. Nichols has the top time in the NCAA in the 10,000 and is second in the 5,000 with a mark that is good for ninth in NCAA history.

This is Nichols' second Pac-12 Woman of the Year honor in her career after she was the Pac-12 Champion in cross country and was named the 2021 Pac-12 Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. She joins only Dani Jones as a two-time Pac-12 Women's Athlete of the Year honoree in CU history.

Oregon's head coach Robert Johnson was named the men and women's Pac-12 Coach of the Year following championships in both genders. The Pac-12 Men's Track Athlete of the Year went to Oregon sprinter Micah Williams who captured both the 100 and 200-meter dash titles. The Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 Men's Freshman of the Year titles both went to Cal's Mykolas Alekna who bettered his own NCAA record in the discus and posted the No.2 mark in the world in the event. Arizona State's Jorinde van Klinken took the Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors after winning both the discus and shot put, while the Pac-12 Women's Freshman of the Year went to Washington State's Micaela De Mello.

Nichols will race only the 5,000 at the upcoming NCAA West Preliminaries, opting out of the 10,000 double to focus on the 5k. She will race for a top-five spot in her heat or the next two fastest times Saturday, May 28, at 7:10 p.m. MT.
