2023-24 Coaching Carousel (Fitzgerald out, DC Braun interim at Northwestern)

Chip is gonna go hard for that job. He's so fed up with UCLA and all the recruiting, booster, administrative and NIL stuff as a college HC that he even considered taking the OC job at Iowa.
USC/UCLA both seem like very diminished jobs by moving into the B1G.

Playing 3, 4, 5 roadies a year that are 2 or 3 time zones away is going to be brutal.

USC went from from the top tier in Pac12 to second tier in B1G, and UCLA from 2nd to 3rd.

Chip and UCLA seem very similar to the last year with Hawkins at CU. Except Chip is actually trying to get out. UCLA admin seems completely disinterested in being competitive and just happy to be in the BIG. Going to be a rough few years

Trying to imagine the UCLA fans (yes they exist, late to the game but they exist) dealing with losing to Nebraska and their fans (plenty in LA as well) in games for position at the bottom of the B1G standings.

Chip Kelly interviewing for the Seahawks OC job. Really feels like him leaving is destined to happen this year. Going to be interesting when that roster opens up for transfers and who they target at this point.

It really is a perfect scenario for Chip and UCLA. Chip wants out and then UCLA won't have to pay out when he is fired at some point this next season. I am not even sure how you come back from this if he stays.

UCLA's AD budget is so upside down, they might not be able to pay Chip this year or his buy-out. This thing is a Greek tragedy, so let it end. I mean UCLA has not been great by any means, but not bad either. Chip is really not a failure of a head coach. He takes over a program on the downslide from Mora Jr. has a few initial rough years then: 3-4 Covid year, then closes out 8-4 (Holiday Bowl cancelled), 9-4, and then 8-5 with a win over USC and a bowl win.

Given they should have never lost last year to ASU and Cal at home to end Pac-12 play, but they had no QB and no fans showing up either, except for CU. If CU went 8-4, 9-4 and 8-5, we would have fans. Not saying Chip did the great job but collage football is getting crazy. Other than Oregon, I'm not sure how the Pac-12 teams will fare in the B1G. It is not like UCLA, USC or UW are loading up for the move.

Huh? He just gets two bad losses at the end of the season excused?

Also, just reading some discussion online, many UCLA fans think Chip's record over the last two years is inflated by a soft non-conference schedule (not a single P5 opponent and two FCS opponents).

The other big issue is recruiting fell off a cliff this year.

IMO, UCLA is the worst positioned P-12 to join the B1G. The AD is over $100M in debt. UCLA leases the Rose Bowl, Pauley Pavillion, and their other sports sites, so they get no parking, concessions etc... Their fans have always been fickle. Pasadena is a haul and driving messy for even 1/2 full games. Not great access to get there. Unfortunately, fans support was waning before Chip was hired. Since Covid the Cali fans have not really been coming back to either USC or UCLA in droves.. Football, College or the NFL has not been King in SoCal for many years. Just so much to do in LA.

I thought Kelly's rebuild took time, but he was steadily getting there (the D showed that they could play well), however after DTR graduated, they sort of anticipated an unknown season/step back. Chips new QB's Garber, Schlee or Dante' did not work out. I think he knew last year would be a step back, but they did beat USC. Losing to Cal and ASU at home was not good. Home v. USC should have been their last game, but it was recheduled. The UCLA AD does have the $$ to fire him and bring in a big name.

You are totally correct, this year their recruiting fall off a cliff. Ranked like 57. I do not think that there were many scholarships available. They lost guys in the portal, but are sort of nearing a break even point. Overall, this will be a JR/SR layden team. I think .500 in B1G play would be great for them. They have a tough draw even without MI or OSU. They play at LSU, then ORE at home.
