2023/24 VOLLEYBALL general off-season news thread (Season unofficially starts Aug. 24 - Black and Gold Scrimmage)

The 1st of 2 home scrimmages for the day, against the Rams, is around 1-1/2 hours away -

The team ended up splitting its matches today (not that it matters) - they beat CSU this morning and lost to the Cowgirls this afternoon.

Wanted to mention that, in addition to the Big 12 conference schedule being already announced (see post #20), a couple non-conference dates are known from fellow- Colorado schools having released their schedules:

the new schedule is out and I like the fact that Udub and Cal are playing CU in non conference. I never understood why that hardly ever happened when CU left the big 12. Has to be easier to schedule travel to Seattle and Berkley then some school on the east coast

Congrats to Coach Mahoney!
(I've just post about Coach separately in the soccer thread.)

Now let's go win the Big 12!

Sanchez, Mahoney Extended Through 2027

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
Colorado Soccer head coach Danny Sanchez and Colorado Volleyball head coach Jesse Mahoney had their contracts extended through the 2027 season by Athletic Director Rick George on Friday.

The extensions come just as the two programs get the 2024 season underway. Soccer opened up training this past Tuesday, while volleyball will return to the court on Thursday, Aug. 8.

"I've been impressed with the trajectory of both our soccer and volleyball programs, and I commend both Danny and Jesse for their excellent leadership of our student-athletes," said George. "As we head back to the Big 12 Conference, I'm looking forward to both teams' continued success this fall and beyond."
...

Mahoney is in his ninth year as head coach of the CU volleyball team and has led the Buffs to a 128-109 (.540) record. As CU's fifth-ever volleyball coach, Mahoney and the Buffs have seen three NCAA appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2017 and two first-round appearances (2018, 2022). The 2023 season marked the third season in-a-row that Mahoney coached a winning overall record. In the 2022 season, he saw his 100th career win as CU's head coach and earned his 300th all-time win as a head coach. In 2021, he led the Buffs to a 9-0 start to the season, a school record. Mahoney has coached the likes of AVCA Second Team All-American Alexa Smith (2017), AVCA Third Team All-American Naghede Abu (2018), AVCA All-American Honorable Mention Brynna DeLuzio (2017) and Volleyball Magazine Freshman All-American Honorable Mention Sterling Parker (2019).

"I'm extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead the volleyball program here at the University of Colorado," Mahoney commented. "I look forward to continuing to work alongside our outstanding coaches and support staff - all dedicated to our athletic department's mission to provide a world-class experience for our student-athletes. I want to thank Athletic Director Rick George, Senior Associate Director Jill Keegan and Chancellor Dr. Justin Schwartz for their confidence and continued support of our volleyball program."

Both coaches will lead their respective programs into the new era of the Big 12 Conference this season.

Soccer will open the season with an exhibition against North Texas on Aug. 10 before the regular season opener against Marquette on Aug. 15. Volleyball will host its Black and Gold scrimmage on Aug. 24 as a tune-up to its first match of the year at North Texas on Aug. 30.

The YOUNG*** Buffs picked 10th in the pre-season Big 12 poll. And, congrats to Taylor Simpson for being named to the pre-season All-Conference team.
(***For those who don't follow closely, I anticipate that Ms. Simpson, who will be a senior this season, could very will be the only upper classman (although junior transfer Sarah Morton may also be in the mix to be the libero and/ or defensive specialist, and I'm hoping Jahara Campbell will also be in the mix after missing 2 seasons with injury) who starts this season, with last season's impressive-looking frosh class, and possibly the prior year's class (all of whom red-shirted their frosh seasons) looking to constitute the bulk of the front row power for the team.)

Figured I'd bump this thread, as the unofficial start to the season, the annual "Black and Gold Scrimmage", is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM MT tomorrow at the Events Center.

Also, wanted to note some nice news, as per the below post,, sounds like the whole team (including the 2 internationals noted in my post #41 above that had been competing at the U20 European Championships) looks to be (???) in Boulder and hopefully ready to go.

So the lots open 3.5 hours before game time. I never saw tailgating for a volleyball game in all of the years I attended those matches.

Went to today's scrimmage - great to see the team out there, and great to see that all 19 rostered players looked to be healthy and in uniform!

Now off to Denton Texas to start the season against North Texas (Friday) and Miami of Florida (Saturday).
