Figured I'd start this thread now as the 1st news has been released, the announcement of which Buffs will be competing in what events at next week's Western region preliminaries, being held this year in Sacramento.

Note that congrats are already in order to Buff Avery McMullen, who has qualified for the Finals in Austin in the Heptathlon. (Due to the grueling nature of the events, the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon don't have competition at the preliminaries. Instead, the top 24 scorers over the season (up through their conference championships) in each multi-event who accept entry into the finals punch their tickets to the Championships finals. Also wanted to note Ms. McMullen is still scheduled to be in Sacramento next week and competing in TWO individual events she qualified and declared for- the 100M hurdles and long jump.)

Go Buffs to the MANY student-athletes declared and accepted to compete at the preliminaries!!!

(Including all runners on the 4X400 relay teams, both of which qualified for Sacramento, I'm guessing roughly 1 dozen CU men and 1 dozen CU women will be competing at prelims.)

SACRAMENTO - The University of Colorado's track and field program heads to the capitol of California for the NCAA West Preliminaries this week. The contingent will compete Wednesday through Saturday for a chance to advance to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA conducts two regionals (East and West) with 48 student-athletes entered into each event. The top 12 finishers at each regional will earn a berth at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships which will take place in Austin, Texas on June 7-10.

The men will be first out of the starting blocks on Wednesday. Matt Ward will get things started for Colorado in the men's hammer at 11 a.m. MT.

The track events will take place later in the evening starting with Isaiah Givens in the 1500-meters. The duo of James Milholen and Tyler Williams will run in the 400-meters, while Garrett Nelson will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The night will close with the trio of Charlie Sweeney, Jace Aschbrenner and Ethan Powell in the 10,000-meters.

Amanda Opp will start the women's side off in Thursday's hammer throw (11 a.m. MT). Jada Green will represent the Black & Gold in the javelin and Avery McMullen will conclude Thursday's field events in the long jump.

McMullen will get things going on the track with the 100-meter hurdles (7 p.m. MT). Bailey Hertenstein will follow in the 1500-meters. Thursday continues for the Buffs with Abbey Glynn running in the 400-meter hurdles and wraps up with India Johnson in the 10,000-meters.

Friday will feature the qualifiers from Wednesday as well as the quarterfinals in the men's steeplechase (Caleb Niednagel), 4x400 relay and the semifinals of the 5000-meters (Sweeney). Saturday is back to the women with the high jump (Allie Routledge), Thursday's qualifiers, the 4x400 relay, steeplechase (Elle Orie) and the 5000-meters (Kaitlyn Barthell, India Johnson, Ella Baran).

The meet is scheduled to be live-streamed on ESPN+ but is limited to events occurring inside the stadium. Throwing events will not be streamed. Wednesday and Friday's coverage will start at 7 p.m. MT. Friday and Saturday's stream will start at 6 p.m. MT.

Regionals Day 1!

The 1st Buff in action at regionals is probably warmed up and ready to go, as CU hammer thrower Matt Ward's event has just begun. (So far, only some of the section 1 throwers have started competition, and Mr. Ward is in section 2.)

Watch ESPN Link to access all 4 days' live streams (available for those with ESPN+ subscriptions. SACRAMENTO—Colorado's James Milholen claimed the final qualifying position in the men's 400-meters on Wednesday's opening day of the NCAA West First Round at Sacramento State.

The first-year Buff ran a 46.26 and finished fifth in the fifth heat of the event. The top three in each of the six heats automatically qualified, followed by the next six fastest times. Milholen's time just edged out Texas State's Dominick Yancy (46.28) to get inside the top 24.

Wednesday began with Matt Ward looking to advance straight to the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw. Ward was the first thrower out of the second flight and climbed to the top spot with a throw of 63.27m (207-7) on his first attempt. That would remain his top mark after his three throws, positioning himself in eighth with one flight to go. Ward slipped out of the top 12 as the final flight progressed, finishing 23rd overall.

Isaiah Givens ran the fastest 700-meter split in the 1500-meters, clocking a 1:00.21 early in the race. He would end up closing seventh in his heat and finish 20th overall at 3:44.46.

Tyler Williams joined Milholen as the two sprinters representing the Buffs in the 400-meters. Williams ran in the sixth and final heat, clocking a 46.97.

Garrett Nelson was the lone hurdler for the men on Wednesday. He posted 53.94 in the 400-hurdles, finishing seventh heat No. 3.

Day one closed with Charlie Sweeney, Ethan Powell and Jace Aschbrenner in the 10,000-meters. Sweeney, who was seeded 16th to start the race was the Buffs' top finisher. He closed the race 18th with a time of 28:46.48. Powell and Aschbrenner followed behind with times of 30:01.77 and 30:35.46, respectively.

The meet continues on Thursday with the women's events getting started. Amanda Opp will kick things off at 11 a.m. MT in the hammer throw.

SACRAMENTO—The second day of the NCAA West First Round saw Colorado send its first athlete through to Austin, Texas, and the NCAA Championships on Friday.

India Johnson, who was seeded 11th in the 10,000-meters, qualified for the NCAA Championships with a top 12 finish to close out the night. She stayed inside the top 12 for the majority of the race, running with a pack that pulled well in front of any challengers. Johnson crossed the finish in 32:44.12, placing ninth in the field of 48.

Bailey Hertenstein was the first Buff to qualify for Saturday's quarterfinals on the day. She secured her spot in the 1500-meters with a first-round time of 4:13.48, finishing seventh overall. Hertenstein was in the fastest heat of the day, helping her earn a pass through to the next round. Her time would have been the top time in each of the three other heats.

Abbey Glynn displayed exceptional prowess in the 400-meter hurdles. She entered the race with the 12th-best time in the NCAA and was the top seed in the sixth and final heat. Glynn got out to a quick start in the first 200-meters and held Iowa's Mariel Bruxvoort at the finish to win the heat in 57.15 and finish seventh overall. She will run Saturday's quarterfinals, looking for a top-12 finish to advance to Texas.

Avery McMullen was the busiest Buff of the day. She pulled a double in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. Both events started at 7 p.m. MT, with McMullen opening with the hurdles. She finished sixth in her flight with a 13.62, before heading over to the long jump where she topped out at 5.86m (19-2.75) on her third attempt.

Amanda Opp got the day started in the women's hammer throw. She threw a distance of 58.84m (193-0) on her first attempt and was seventh early on. Her first throw proved to be her best, but she found herself out of a qualifying position after the second heat.

Jada Green hovered around a qualifying spot in the javelin. She used a toss of 49.95m (163-10) on her third attempt to into the third position after the second flight. Her mark wouldn't hold through the third flight as she dropped out of a qualifying spot.

The men will return to action on Friday. Caleb Niednagel getting things going in the steeplechase quarterfinals at 6:40 p.m. MT.

Looks like the men's team won't be sending anyone to Austin, although it was definitely an "agony of defeat" moment at the end, as the Buffs were the 1st team with the fastest time that did NOT qualify in the final event of most big college meets, the 4X400M relay. (It looked OK early in the relay after the Buffs finished as the 1st out of a top 3 auto-qualifying spot finishing 4th in Heat 1, and were still 2nd fastest after the 2nd heat with the 3 fastest non auto-qualifiers going to Austin. Unfortunately 2 of the time qualifiers ended up being in the final (3rd) heat.)

The women (who already have 2 that have earned their ticket to Austin) finish off the Regionals with their Finals Day today, with action in the high jump beginning Buff action at 3:30 PM MT, while activity on the track begins at 6:00 PM MT.

"
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Colorado track & field team made one last strong effort to advance a men's event to the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships, but fell just a fraction of a second short at the NCAA West Preliminaries Friday.

The men's 4x400 meter relay quartet of Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and James Milholen clocked a time of 3:05.83 in the quarterfinals, finishing fourth in the first heat and 13th overall. However only 12 teams move on to the NCAA Championship in and Buffaloes were edged by TCU for the final spot by 0.63 seconds.

Milholen, the anchor leg in the 4x400, also ran solo in the quarterfinals of the 400 meters, finishing in 23rd place at 47.07.

Charlie Sweeney placed 25th among a field of 48 in the men's 5k semifinal ending with a time of 13.55.57.

Caleb Niednagel represented the Buffaloes in the quarterfinals of the 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 9:24.38 to finish 47th overall.

The final day of competition begins Saturday with Allie Routledge competing in the women's high jump at 3:30 p.m. MT.
"

Today's action is now well underway.
(No Buff advancers to Austin so far, but the best CU chances are still upcoming (400M hurdles at 8:25 PM MT, 5000M at 9:10 PM MT and, although it would be an upset, the always dynamic and often unpredictable 4X400M relay closing out the regionals beginning at 9:45 PM MT.).)

Abbey Glynn utilizes her new school record time in the 400M hurdles to easily qualify for Austin. (She finished 2nd in her heat in a time that was the 3rd fastest of all 3 heats, with the top 12 advancing to Austin.)

And a 4th Buff, Ella Baran, qualifies in the 5000M for Austin with a very solid run that has her finish 3rd in her heat. (The top 5 in each of the 2 heats auto-qualified.)

Always a little extra joy for me when the relays do well - The Buffs were the 4th place finisher in Heat 1, with the top 3 auto-qualifying, but they end up fine as their time holds up to be the 2nd fastest of the time qualifiers when the top 3 go to Austin. (They entered the regionals with only the 6th best seed time in their heat.)

In the process, they beat the time of the team that competed at last year's region (which consisted of at least 2-3 of the same runners as this year's squad) by almost a second and take over as the 2nd fastest 4X400 team in Buff history, and are now less than 1/2 second behind the all-time record, which dates all the way back to 1996. (Maybe a GREAT effort in Austin may give them a chance at the school record.)

SACRAMENTO—The University of Colorado track & field program had a successful showing in the final day of the NCAA West Preliminaries, sending two individuals and one relay team to the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

Abbey Glynn will be heading back to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles for the second consecutive season. Glynn placed third amongst a field of 24, setting a new school record of 56.01. Her time improves on the 56.41 that had her seeded 12th to start the weekend and will move her inside the top 10 in the NCAA DI national rankings.

Ella Baran was the second individual to qualify for the championships, placing fifth amongst 45 runners with a time of 15:38.22 in the 5000-meter quarterfinal. She ran the fastest splits at the 4200 meters (1:14.13) and again at 4600 meters (1:11.42), helping her finish third in her heat with the top five automatically advancing. India Johnson and Kaitlyn Barthell also represented the Buffaloes in the event, placing 32nd and 35th respectively.

The women's 4x400 team of Grace Jenkins, Emma Pollak, Avery McMullen and Glynn clocked a 3:33.54 to place 11th and punch its ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Glynn ran the anchor leg in 51.20 and passed Nevada in the final sprint to the finish to claim one of two time qualifiers. The team's time is also good for second all-time on the CU performance list.

Gabrielle Orie placed 15th in a field of 48 with a time of 10:07.30 in the steeplechase quarterfinals. She missed out on qualifying for nationals by three spots

The Buffs' first race of the day was the 1500-meter semifinals. Bailey Hertenstein led the pack early in heat one, running the first 300 meters in 51.39. She was unable to keep the pace up and finished in 4:18.94, placing 19th.

Allie Routledge opened the day in the high jump. She cleared the first two heights on her first attempts. Routledge needed to go to her third attempt to clear at 1.77m (5-9.75). She struck out on the next interval of 1.82m (5-11.5), placing 19th.

Colorado will close the season out at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas (June 8-10). Johnson, who advanced in the women's 5000-meters on Thursday, will join Glynn, Baran and the 4x400 relay as the Buffs contingent.

Final regional results - https://cubuffs.com/documents/2023/5/27/CompiledResults.pdf

Wanted to note that, with the Championships finals (in Austin) now a few days away, I've gone in and added a bottom section to the original post that contains links and more info on the finals.

A few notes:
1) With no Buff men qualifying for the Championships, it's the women's days, Thursday and Saturday, that will see most of the action for CU athletes. The exception is Avery McMullen, whose 1st day competing in the women's heptathlon will be Friday.

2) For the various Buffs, looks like the competition schedule is:
Thursday -
8:30 PM MT - 400 Hurdles Semifinal, Heat 1 of 3 (Abbey Glynn; Advance top 2 from each heat plus next best 3 to final)
9:08 PM MT - 10000M final (India Johnson)
9:48 PM MT - 4x400 Relay Semifinal (Heat 3 of 3 (Advance top 2 from each heat plus next best 3 to final)

Friday -
Avery McMullen in Heptathlon - Day 1 of 2:
Time (MT) Event
1:45 PM 100 Hurdles
2:45 PM High Jump
4:45 PM Shot Put
8:43 PM 200 Meters

Saturday (Currently does not include POSSIBLE finals for 400M hurdles or 4X400M relay. Will add info for those if/ when Buffs advance.) -
Avery McMullen in Heptathlon - Day 2 of 2:
Time (MT) Event
3:00 PM Long Jump
4:15 PM Javelin
8:43 PM 800 Meters

8:55 PM MT - 5000M final (Ella Baran)

3) As should be expected given the location and time of year, looks like hot and muggy conditions are forecasted throughout the 4 days. (At least conventional thought is that sprinters like hot conditions; distance runners - not so much.)
Chances of rain are currently only showing in the low to mid 20 per cents all 4 days. Hopefully this means that the chances of delays, usually due to lightening, are also avoided, or at least less likely. (I seem to remember quite a few lightning delays when trying to watch many meets held in the south.)

AUSTIN— The University of Colorado track and field will have four individuals and a relay team in at Mike A. Myers Stadium this week competing for national championships at this year's NCAA outdoor meet.

Colorado's Abbey Glynn, India Johnson, Avery McMullen and Ella Baran will be the lone individuals, while Grace Jenkins, Emma Pollak, Jaida Drame and Glynn will team for the 4x400 relay. The women's events will get started on Thursday.

Glynn, who will be sprinting in the 400-meter hurdle semifinals on Thursday (8:30 p.m. MT), will kick things off for the Buffs. Glynn set a school record of 56.01 while placing third amongst a field of 24 at the NCAA West Preliminaries. She is seeded third in the race and will be the top qualifier in the first heat of the night. Glynn will need to finish in the top two of her heat or be one of the three fastest non-auto-qualifiers to advance.

Johnson will be the first Buff looking to clinch a national title on Thursday. She will run in the 10,000-meter finals (9:08 p.m.). Johnson qualified with a time of 32:44.12 at the West Preliminaries and is seeded ninth in a packed field of 24.

Thursday will wrap up with the 4x400 relay (9:48 p.m.). Drame will take the place of McMullen on the team that ran a 3:33.54 to qualify for the semi-finals. The team's time stands as the second-fastest in the history of CU performance records. Colorado has now sent a 4x400 relay team into the semifinals in three of the last four outdoor season. The top two in each of the three heats will advance, plus the next three fastest times.

McMullen will get her meet underway with the first four events of the heptathlon on Friday. She will take on the 100-meter hurdles to start the day (1:45 p.m.), followed by the high jump, shot put and 200-meeters. The heptathlon will conclude on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meters.

Baran will get her shot in the 5000-meter final on Saturday (8:55 p.m.). She advanced out of the West Prelims with a time of 15:38.22.

The 400-meter hurdle finals (4:15 p.m.) and the 4x400 relay finals (9:12 p.m.) are also set for Saturday.

ESPN2 will cover the meet live each day. Thursday's coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. MT.
"

Big congrats to Buff Abbey Glynn, who starts CU's Championships' efforts by breaking her own school record in the 400M hurdles in a time (55.94) that made her the fastest of the 3 time qualifiers that have earned starts to Saturday's finals. (She had the 6th fastest overall time, so hopefully won't have a far outside or inside lane in the finals.)

Also, want to give congrats to former Buff Emily Venters, who ended up with a great 2nd place finish in the 10000M final tonight. (Ms. Venters transferred to CU after her freshman year, unfortunately had injury and/ or illness issues most of her 2 (???) academic years in Boulder, but still earned her undergrad degree in Integrative Physiology at CU before transferring to compete with the Utes her last 2 years.)

AUSTIN— Abbey Glynn headlined the opening day for the contingent of Colorado women who opened competition at the NCAA Championships at Mike A Myers Track & Soccer Stadium on Thursday.

Glynn and India Johnson were CU's lone individuals to compete on Thursday. Grace Jenkins, Emma Pollak, Jaida Drame and Glynn teamed for the 4x400 relay.

Conditions were hot in Austin with temperatures still pushing 80 degrees with 79% humidity during the evening session.

Glynn kicked things off for the Buffs, breaking her school record in the women's 400-meter hurdles semifinal. Glynn clocked a personal best of 55.94 to place third in her heat and sixth overall. She was in the first and fastest heat of the night with four of the nine finalists coming out of the heat. Her time would have been good for an auto-qualifier in the third heat. Glynn will race for CU's first 400-hurdles national championship on Saturday (8:27 p.m. MT).

Johnson represented Colorado in the 10,000-meter final. She would withdraw from the race after 4,400 meters. Johnson wrapped up her collegiate career with honorable mention All-American honors, making her a three-time All-American in the 10,000-meters.

The 4x400 meter relay closed the first night of the women's competition with a top 20 finish. Colorado finished seventh in its heat and 19th overall with a time of 3:36.37. The team earned honorable mention All-American honors and improved four spots from last year's meet.

Friday's belongs solely to Avery McMullen and the heptathlon. She will compete in four events throughout the day, starting with the 100-meter hurdles (1:45 p.m. MT).

Friday's coverage of the heptathlon will start online on ESPN+. Network coverage on ESPN2 will get underway at 7 p.m. MT.

AUSTIN— Avery McMullen was the lone Buffalo in action at Friday's NCAA Championships at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Field.

McMullen competed in the heptathlon's first four events, logging a total of 3547 points. She will enter Saturday eight in the field of 23 remaining competitors.

The day started with the 100-meter hurdles. The CU junior placed eighth and was just off her personal best time (13.47), crossing the finish in 13.53.

The high jump was the second event on the docket for McMullen. She entered the competition 1.63m (5-4.25). McMullen cleared her first four heights on her first attempt, raising the bar to 1.75m (5-8.75). It took her two attempts to clear, setting a personal best in the event. She was the only competitor in her flight to clear the height, before bowing out at 1.78m (5-10). She would finish second in the event behind Oklahoma's Pippi Lotta Enok, who cleared on her first attempt.

The second-place finish in the high jump earned McMullen 916 points in the event and propelled her into first place after the first two events with 1,962 points.

The shot put followed where McMullen threw her best mark of 11.41m (37-5.25), dropping her to 11th overall.

Day one of the heptathlon concluded later in the evening with the 200-meters. McMullen started in lane eight and was running in fourth coming out of the turn and into the final 100-meters. She turned on the after-burners and out-sprinted Notre Dame's Jadin O'Brien and edged out Enok right at the finish, stopping the clock in a personal best and a CU top-10 time of 24.18.

McMullen will wrap up the heptathlon on Saturday afternoon, starting with the long jump at 3 p.m. MT.

A few highlight tweets from Ms. McMullen's heptathlon events yesterday.
(Although it's probably going to be VERY tight one way or the other, her VERY good start has put the OLD (5,863 points by Annette Tannander in 1983) CU school record in danger. Ms. McMullen is already the 2nd all-time Buff in the heptathlon with 5,831 points, set at this year's Pac 12 Championships, and she has 51 more points after yesterday's events than she did after day 1 of those Conference Championships.) -
