(As usual, I plan on using this thread for all games as the Buffs (hopefully) advance at this year's tournament. I'm posting a little earlier than normal as I saw the nice Pac 12 release (see below) has already posted a nice release about the tourney.)

Buff lacrosse (9-7 overall, 7-3 in Pac 12 play) starts off tournament play against the Oregon Ducks (5-11, 1-9). (Even with the relatively comfortable win over Oregon yesterday, I'd assume/ hope the relatively recent memories of having to score the last 2 goals in regulation before winning in overtime in Eugene less than a month ago, and the Ducks upsetting the Buffs to knock them out in the 1st round of last year's Pac 12, will keep CU VERY intense (while still being loose) when they face off with the Ducks on Wednesday.)

Looks like all tournament games will be shown on many Pac 12 Network channels. (See bottom of this post for more information and links.)

SAN FRANCISCO - The bracket for the 2023 Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament is set, with USC securing the No. 1 seed after taking the regular season crown.

California is hosting the event, which is set to take place at California Memorial Stadium from May 3-6, and is open to the public. All five matches of the 2023 Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app, with Troy Clardy and Kara Lentz on the call all tournament long. A full schedule can be found below and at Pac-12.com.

The No. 20 Trojans (14-3, 9-1 Pac-12) finished atop the Pac-12 standings for the title, their second outright Pac-12 crown and first since 2019. USC boasts one of the best defenses in the country this season, allowing just 8.31 goals per game which is the fifth-fewest in Division I. The Trojans went undefeated (8-0) at home this year, the fourth time in program history they’ve accomplished that feat.

STANFORD (10-7, 8-2 Pac-12) gets its third-straight first-round bye after earning the No. 2 seed. Despite having one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Cardinal posted its ninth-straight double-digit win season* and is eyeing its 12th NCAA Tournament berth.

COLORADO (9-7) will be the No. 3 seed after going 7-3 in league action, its most Pac-12 wins since 2019. The Buffs earned their 100th win in program history earlier this year, which came in an upset of then-No. 21 Stanford. Colorado is led by Charlie Rudy, who paces the Conference of Champions in goals with 61.

ARIZONA STATE (5-12, 3-7 Pac-12) will be the No. 4 seed, looking to make back-to-back appearances in the Pac-12 championship game after reaching the tournament final a season ago.

Host CALIFORNIA (5-12, 2-8 Pac-12) and OREGON (5-11, 1-9 Pac-12) will serve as the fifth and sixth seeds, respectively. The Golden Bears will have their best seed at the Pac-12 Tournament since 2019, while the Ducks are led by Morgan McCarthy and Gabby Cleveland, who have each scored 30 or more goals.

The tournament champion will receive the Pac-12's automatic bid to the 29-teamNCAA Tournament. The Pac-12 has sent two or more teams to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four opportunities.

*Excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Preview for Wednesday's game -

BOULDER - The Colorado lacrosse team heads to Berkeley this week to face the Oregon Ducks in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament.

The No.3-seeded Buffs (9-7, 7-3) swept No.6-seeded Oregon (5-11, 1-9) in their regular season matchups, taking a tight 15-14 overtime victory while in Eugene Ore., and dominating the Ducks in a 15-5 victory just last Friday in CU's final game of the regular season.

The matchup is a repeat of the first round of last year's Pac-12 tournament when CU was upset 14-10 by the Ducks.

Colorado's most recent game against Oregon saw nine different CU players find the back of the net. Sam McGee led the offense with three goals, while senior Carley Farella scored for the first time this season and earned a single-game career high with two goals. Sophomore Katie McLean earned her first career goal on a free position attempt in the last two seconds of the game.

Although Oregon earned 14 draw controls to Colorado's nine, the Buffs only had 12 turnovers while Oregon had 17. As a result, CU picked up 13 ground balls in comparison to Oregon's six, and the Buffs were able to take advantage of their possession with 24 shots on goal while Oregon had 13 shots on goal.

The Oregon attackers who did manage to slip past CU's defense then had to face goalkeeper Grace Donnelly. The senior had nine saves during the game for a .615 save percentage.

One CU player who had a surprisingly quiet day was fifth-year Charlie Rudy. It was the first game all season where Colorado's leading attacker hasn't scored a single goal. It also marked the first time in 11 games that Rudy hasn't earned a hat trick.

Even without Rudy putting points on the board, the Buffs dominated the Ducks and will look to do the same in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament this Wednesday at 8 p.m. MT.

Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals

If the Buffs defeat Oregon in the Pac-12's first round, they'll play No. 2 Stanford Thursday at 8 p.m. MT.

Check out the whole Pac-12 Tournament schedule here.

The game has been VERY tight, but the Buffs do score the last 4 goals of the half (all in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd quarter) and take a 9-5 lead into halftime.

Keep it up BUUFFFSSSS!

Looks like this could be a nail-biter til the end. After CU scored the 1st goal of the 3rd period to go up 5, they go scoreless for 13+ minutes while Oregon scores 4 straight before the Buff's Morgan Pence scores what could be a BIG goal with 12 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

It's 11-9 CU heading into the final quarter.

Buffs Advance In First Round of Pac-12 Tournament

Colorado took a 16-10 victory over Oregon.

BERKELEY – Colorado lacrosse advanced to the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals after taking down the Oregon Ducks 16-10 here Wednesday night at California Memorial Stadium.

Despite the rainy conditions, strong second and fourth quarters allowed the Buffaloes (10-7, 7-3 Pac-12) to avenge last year's first round exit against the Ducks (5-12,1-9) to move on to play Stanford in the next round.

"It was a hard fought game, and we knew it would be," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden commented after the victory. "I'm proud of how our team responded in the second quarter and especially fourth quarter to solidify the win."

Colorado's defense was a force this evening, causing 10 Oregon turnovers and allowing just 14 shots on goal.

The offense was led by Ashley Stokes who scored three goals and assisted on three more. Sam McGee was also the leading goal-scorer in the game as she put four in the back of the net tonight.

After getting past the first round, Colorado will have a tough opponent in Stanford. The Buffs split games in two matchups with the Cardinal this season, winning one at home and losing one on the road.

"[Stanford] will be a tough game for us, and it will come down to our mental toughness," Whidden said. "We are prepared for that challenge. Possession will be key and we have to find a way to compete on the draws all four quarters.

"We are excited to have another day tomorrow and will make sure we are prepared and rested in the quick turnaround."

nice win, got to be more consistent through out the entire game to beat Stanford today

Live stats has loaded starting lineups, so assume gametime is CLOSE.

Go Buffs!

For the Buffs -

Watching live on the Buffs Mobile app. BUFFS SCORE FIRST!
I'm not watching and it's not because I am superstitious. It has nothing to do with trauma from not watching the first half of USC but then tuning in for the 2nd half. I just like following games via internet updates more than watching. Yep. Go Buffs!

Buffs got up 2-1 early, then Stanford scored the next 4 before CU scores gets one back with the last goal of the quarter.

It's a 3-5 Trees lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

Buffs still in it as the lead remains 2 for Stanford heading into the half, 5-7.

(Admittedly not knowing much about lacrosse,it still amazes how many times that's proven. After having issues with draw control (at least) the last few games, and one of the Stanford players winning this year's "Draw Specialist" award from the Pac 12, I was worried THAT draw control could be a major issue for CU. However, the Buffs are up in that stat 9-5 at the half. Unfortunately, turnovers are going the other way, with 6 against the Buffs vs. 3 for Stanford.)

After a Stanford yellow card, CU calls a timeout and (McGee) scores on a free position shot with the player advantage to go up 1 (12-11).

Around 3 minutes left.

BERKELEY – Colorado lacrosse moved on to the Pac-12 championship game for the first time since 2021 with its thrilling 12-11 victory over Stanford here Thursday night.

The Buffaloes (11-7, 7-3 Pac-12) scored with just over three minutes remaining in the game on a player-up opportunity to take the lead and the win over the Cardinal (10-8, 8-2 Pac-12).
"I am so proud of this team. It is not easy to play on back-to-back days, and we had to earn both wins," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "Today was about our mental toughness and discipline."

Colorado and Stanford were extremely similar in most statistical categories this evening; however the Buffs were able to capitalize on more free-position attempts which was ultimately the difference maker.

The CU offense was led by Sam McGee who scored four goals for the second straight game. The Pac-12 leading goal-scorer, Charlie Rudy, also had a great performance, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. Ashley Stokes and Morgan Pence each recorded two goals and an assist in the matchup.

After a tough first quarter, Grace Donnelly showed up when she needed to, allowing just two goals in the final quarter. She finished with nine saves and a 45.0 percent save percentage.

The Buffs will face off against No. 17 USC in the Pac-12 championship game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT as they look to win their first ever Pac-12 title.

The Trojans are coming off a 9-5 victory over Arizona State in the semifinals. The last time USC won a Pac-12 title was in 2019 when it defeated Colorado.

"Saturday will be a tough matchup. USC is a great team; they're very well coached and they're very dynamic," Elliott said. "We know it will take 60 full minutes to get the job done, and we are excited for this opportunity to be back in the Pac-12 Championship game!"
