'22 TX DT Bear Alexander (Signed to Georgia)

Yeah. I’ve heard his name like 5 times the pst 2 years and every time it’s been about him entering or withdrawing from the portal.

3.5 sacks in 2.25 seasons. 5 total tackles this year. I know he’s a DL, but he’s supposed to be a pass rushing IDL
I only watched a few USC games last year and he was very disruptive in all of them. He's not getting nearly as much playing time this year and I don't think he's fitting in with their new defense.

I watched too many USC games last year. Alexander was one of their best D players last season, but that D was terrible. He was one of the few guys that had sufficient, size, speed, and athleticism on that D. He took most of the double-teams and still had 48 tackles last year. Really a bright spot for the maligned D.

You are correct on him testing the portal, recruitment etc... He was a multi-flipper, landed at GA out of HS (courted by Riley when at OU) then transferred to USC. He has always seemed like a fish out of water in CA/USC. It never seemed like he loved the coaches per se. This season, SC has all new D coaches + a bunch of transfers running a radically new scheme; hence his position probably changed somewhat. Sounds like Bear and the new staff never hit it off. Bear's playing time was not what he wanted, however per Riley he played 1/3 of the snaps last week v. MI, thus he is not completely buried on the depth chart.

Per Riley: “He played over a third of the game [against Michigan],” Riley said via Rivals’ TrojanSports.com. “So people want to act like the guy’s not playing snaps. He’s doing a good job for us out here. He’s getting better. There’s no story there. I know you guys are looking for one, there’s no story there. The guy’s out here working hard, he’s improving, he’s in a new system with a new coach. He’s getting better. I think he’s going to continue to get better. It should be hard to play D-line at USC. Like, it ought to be kind of hard. It wasn’t hard last year, and that’s why we weren’t very good up there. We’re pretty decent up there, and it’s hard, and the margins are thin.”

In transferring again, I think ends up closer to home in the SEC somewhere (probably not GA), but who knows--it could come down to playing time/team fit, as he has NFL aspirations and perhaps the raw talent necessary for a NFL run. I do not think he gets drafted next year after sitting. I hate seeing guys quit early in the season since you have no clue what they will look like come Spring ball (or Dec/Jan signing season): in shape, somewhat out-of-shape; totally out-of-shape/very heavy or not lifting, etc.... Then the fact they miss all the game/practice reps and are basically checked out of football for a while. Quitting early will not enhance NIL opportunities (i.e. don't think Bear will break the NIL bank this transfer, the SC transfer probably did), however he will have upside in the portal. Also, although not mentioned, he may be battling injuries, banged up after last season, or just fed up since last season's coaching changes. He played a ton of snaps on SC's interior Dline as a True-Soph playing all 13 games--could be a situation where he sit out some of all of Spring/Fall camps rehabbing ... falling out of favor with the new staff.

If he was here, he'd be among the top 10 DTs we've had in the past 20 years based on his performance as an underclassman, not even counting his tremendous upside. As long as there aren't serious issues with his training, practice habits and film study, I want CU to pursue him in the portal.

Travis and Seaton have finally broken our long standing 5 star jinx. Bring it on!

Prime, Sapp and Lewis did a lot of due diligence on Bear and wanted him here (supposedly he wanted to be here, too) to truly develop for the NFL, but going on a third school in 4 years and bag chasing at every stop while not making much of an impact anywhere was a deal breaker.

Oregon definitely suits him. They and Ole Miss are almost paying guys like this as complete speculation plays and are fine with just stashing on the bench.

FIFY to include the four schools in four years of high school.

This is a case study of what's wrong with the current system. His path stunts development as a player and also gets in the way of academic progress or developing close mentors or deep friendships. It's basically selling off your future while still a teenager.
