Transfer Portal '24 TNFR LB Nikhai Hill-Green

Leaving before the Bowl game? Why? Does the Portal close before we play?
Welcome to the NCAA Transfer Portal!

My understanding is the portal entry period closes 5 days after a teams bowl or final playoff game ends. ASU's Dillingham told his guys to go now so they can have every opportunity, however they can still play in the CFP game--no questions asked, so long as things do not interfere for their bowl prep. Easier for a them having a bye week.

Prime is taking a different tact, however it appears is inline for coaches with teams playing in regular bowls. Also, Prime wants his guys to play the Bowl--this is how Colorado ends it's season. We are on a shortened window than ASU.

The portal rules have crazy timeline, but are that way so transferring commits can start at new school right away, start winter conditioning, and be a full go for Spring ball. This helps. IMO, a Spring/Summer transfer period would be a cluster. On many teams, guys have sailed, so why not let them get a leg up on their next chapter.

Portal closes Dec 28th I believe. I think the reason the portal days are when they are is to match up with all schools regardless of if they’re on quarters or semesters. To put up the mirage that academics matter. At least that’s what the guy on foxsports said yesterday.

Academic calendar is one of the biggest obstacles to having a recruiting calendar that makes sense.

portal entry closes the 28th, you don't have to sign by then

I heard Dan Mullen earlier say he'd do away with the spring portal because if he has a guy in for spring practice he's counting on him to be on the team for a season.

There's no perfect answer here.

On the flip side a guy could play in spring practice and realize that he in fact does have a spot on the team with an impressive spring.

And yes, there certainly is no perfect answer but this might be the best option to avoid the portal being open when the CFP is about to start

Why not just have 1 portal window that opens in late spring?
Because college acceptance rules are still based on typical HS recruiting. Correct me if I’m wrong I’m only going off of memory here While you’re idea is ideal for transfers, a player can’t practice with the team if they are not, at least, accepted to the university. If I remember correctly, schools don’t send acceptance letters for fall until April, and that’s for the early acceptance period. Obviously, that’s after spring ball, so what’s the point based on the current calendar. Obviously the next question is, is there an exception for athletes to get accepted earlier? Not yet, based on my knowledge. To make your idea work, all transfers have to be summer transfer, which no athletic department would agree too. Transfer players don’t want that either.

That's an easy workaround. Admissions departments are getting guys accepted immediately. The issue is making an exception to admit athletes mid-semester.
