Is a monumental program downturn at an end for Washington State? Has coach Paul Wulff delivered a transformative victory?
While it might be too early to say for sure, the 31-27 comeback win at Colorado hints strongly that things might be finally getting better in Pullman.
Marquess Wilson's 63-yard touchdown reception with 1:10 remaining certainly feels like the biggest play during Wulff's four-year tenure at his alma mater.
The Cougars, 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, were down 27-17 with 5:11 remaining, but rallied with two touchdowns in the final 2:30.
Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, who is filling in for injured starter Jeff Tuel, passed for 376 yards with three TDs.
Wulff even saw a gamble pay off. He decided, after a 77-yard TD drive, not to risk an onside kick with 2:35 left. That decision worked out when the Cougars got the ball back with 1:50 left.
This game seemed critical for Wulff because he may need a bowl game to keep his job. This visit to rebuilding Colorado seemed like one of the few games on the schedule when the Cougs wouldn't be decisive underdogs.
As for the Buffaloes, who fell to 1-4 and 0-1, they need seven wins to earn bowl eligibility because of a 13-game schedule. That appears unlikely, as new coach Jon Embree's rebuilding job may be more substantial than some imagined.
