Strange, because I don’t remember the RB position being a weakness on this team. I think Evans probably got more carries than he truly earned, but it’s not like we didn’t get production from that position. Three 1,000 rushers in three years.
The RB1 has not been a weakness, obviously, but a backup of any kind definitely has been for years now. Hagan also has major question marks surrounding his recruiting abilities. He's had like 3 years to sell legitimate playing time as a true freshman and he's brought in Fontenot, Deion Smith and Broussard.

How many of those 1000 yard rushers were recruited by Hagan? ans. 0
The fact that Evans was actually running the football for CU was embarassing. None of Hagan's recruits could beat out tiny Kyle Evans.

I get all that, and I don’t totally disagree. Where I have an issue is when people discount him as a RB coach. He’s been decent if unspectacular. In 2019 we will have Davis, Fontentot, Mangham and Bisharat. Between those four guys, we *should* get decent production. I have no problem giving Hagan the opportunity to raise his recruiting game. If he doesn’t, well, then we find somebody who will.

Phil Lindsey was recruited by the previous staff, and Travon McMillian was recruited here by Phil.
Evans followed MM here from San Jose as a walkon.
The fact that Fontenot, Broussard, or Deion Smith couldn't beat out Evans said a lot.

I could have recruited Lindsay to CU.

Me: “Hey Phil, we want you to play for us in Boulder”

Lindsay: “Where do I sign?”

I don’t know it that supports my position or not, but pointing out that he was recruited by Embree isn’t really saying anything, either.

Fontenot did in the spring. I wonder what happened in fall camp.

When I was a kid we used to go duck hunting a lot. If we wanted to limit out. We had to go where the ducks were. Seems to me that it doesn’t really matter where’s coach is from. If he wants 5 Star athletes, he has to go where they are to bag them.

This foot print idea about recruiting a set number of kids from specific areas sound like nonsense to me.

Fontenot and Bisharat have had several years of Darian's coaching and I seriously doubt they'll ever play much. It didn't even take an arm tackle to bring Fontenot down in August camp. He succumbed to hand tackles.

Davis is a poor recruit to this new style of running attack for us. Having never seen him play I'll reserve judgement but I won't hold my breath either.

Broussard is so tiny that you could never consider him an every down back. He is a small scat-back occasional weapon.

Were left with Smith and MangMang as the only 2 viable options. We'll see but aren't there already rumblings about moving Mangham to LB?

I have no problem giving Hagan the opportunity to raise his recruiting game either. It's just he has a little less than 2 months to RAISE it. Substantially!

If the Buffs have to go the grad transfer route yet again for 2019 then Hagan aint cutting it and needs to hit the road immediately and bring in his replacement.

Using the recruiting formula mentioned, we should hire Embree immediately, since he recruited Lindsay, Shay Fields, Nelson Spruce and Sefo - who are statistically some of the best Buffs in history.
Hagan has been a good RB coach, according to the production of the RB's with him as RB Coach and has done so in a heavy pass infused offense. MT seems to be a closer. Position coach finds the player and he will go into their living room and get the signature. Sounds similar to the philosophy of HC McCartney.

Our RB unit has been a mess for years. Hagan's doghouse is a real thing, so frankly I'm not sure how much of anything we know about the returning guys. I'm pretty sure Donovan Lee would have been more productive than Kyle Evans last year, but we only saw him carry the ball twice.

The Rb is the one position where production doesn’t have anything to do with coaching. Talent and oline play. You gonna credit EB for Peterson’s success in Minny? A good rb will get his yards. Coaching affects things like fumbles, pass pro, catching the ball etc. Thats why teams put the emphasis on recruiting at that spot. Anyone can coach stud RBs

Hire Embree? As a recruiter over the likes of DH? YES. Abso****inglutely. That's a no-brainer. You're not suggesting otherwise are you? That Hagan is a better recruiter than Embree.

Position Coach finds the players? Ummm no thanks with what DH has found over the last few years. My guess is that Mel Tucker is going to have to handle this situation directly himself.

So we'll recruit nationally instead of just focusing on pockets in Texas and California and lil ol colorado. I love it.
So our new identity will be primarily as a power running team. Some take on SEC big boi football. I love that.

Please tell me that MT retained Hagan as a TE coach or a Grad Asst. or anything but the RB coach. We're Doomed.

If RG forced MT's hand about retaining Hagan then RG is at fault and just hamstrung his new hire.

If MT truly thinks Hagan was worth retaining as our RB coach then I have my first serious doubt about MT. Hey Mel, you gotta have good RB's to be able to rush the football.

The RB coach needs to recruit a couple fitting RB prospects between right now and February as I don't think there is a RB candidate on our entire team right now that could make the roster of an SEC team. I hope Tucker picked a good RB coach.

 Do you know what a Grad. Assistant is? I hope that was sarcasm but I can't tell if you actually don't know based on some posts.

OL will look a lot different even by this spring. 20# + across the board and north south run blocking with vertical pass sets. Personnel will be there and the offense will favor a physical running attach being the basis for the offense and playcalling. All the skill guys will benefit and our QB will be put in much better situations with a lot less to worry about.
Makes me happy

It looks as though Adam Toyoma's job as Director of Recruiting is open on the CU staff. That's going to be an important hire.

Isn't that where you can get an up and coming energetic guy with an eye on getting him on the staff in a year or two?

While I think Toyoma did I decent job, I think this shows MT has a very specific plan for how he wants recruiting to work and is going to bring in someone who understands it. Wouldn't be surprised if this was a hire from assistant director position on the Georgia staff.

That's more what the Recruiting Assistant jobs are for. CU has 3 of those (Aunese, Hall, Slife). We also use our QC titles for that, with Taye for defense and Da Prato for offense. Looking around at other programs, Director of Recruiting seems more like an operations management type role that is more about being an organizer and administrator (but with people skills since he's interacting with recruits). It looks more like a career path toward an Associate AD job than a path to becoming an on-field coach.

Basically, a young RG.

Assuming that MT really is bringing in a facsimile of Smart's recruiting & football operational structures (which are a facsimile of Saban's), I think we're going to see some very different position descriptions for existing positions than what we've seen in the past (and hopefully some new positions too).

I also don't think they necessarily need to be filled by former UGA or Bama staffers, as long as they are hired to the new PDs.

I think that was one of the more "boring," but actually insanely important pieces of Smart's transformation of the football operations team at UGA. He didn't just bring in a bunch of new people - it may look like a "let's hire a bunch of people" from the outside - but that's not what happened. More /= better... Unless there's a well thought out plan to use the more.

The reports are that every single position was a deliberately created: this is specifically what their job responsibilities are, this is how their performance will be evaluated, this is the type of experience we are looking for, and these are the skills we want.

When you define positions well, it makes them easier to fill with the right person - even if they're coming from a different background or organization (basically, they don't need to come from UGA or Bama, they can come from Boise or UAB - as long as their skills match the PD).

Structural stuff like this is what separates the best programs from the rest. It's why they reload instead of rebuild - even with new coaches.

My hope is that this is what is being done.

At the end of the day, I think the most important hires are liable to be 15-30 people that most of us will never talk about.

Since we haven't seen much of these guys you speak of, it's possible that you are wrong!

I'd be making a call immediately if I was CU. He's taking a demotion to keep a job at Utah State. He could come in and coach OLBs at CU (or TEs if he wants to get some experience on the offensive side) and earn a major pay bump + P5 experience in the process.

(FS) Utah State: Frank Maile, who served as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the program the past three seasons, will remain on staff as assistant head coach and tight ends coach with Gary Andersen. Andersen has announced he will coach the defensive line himself.

Terrance Jamison is another guy who would be a nice fit for this staff at OLB/DE. Young DL coach who was at FAU for 3 years before going to TTU for the last 2 seasons. Lost his job when they got rid of Kliff this year & Wells brought pretty much his whole staff from Utah State. From Illinois, played at Wisconsin. Got his start in GA/QC type jobs at Cal & Wisconsin before landing the full-time gig at FAU.
