Arizona State to announce $300m renovation of Sun Devil Stadium

They're talking about the capacity of Sun Devil Stadium being around 60,000. That's a drop from it's current capacity. With the CU expansion (rumored, still), that will bring the Folsom capacity up to around 60,000.

Interesting that they interviewed Dan Skipper. I'm sure he's also seen the renderings of CU's expansion, which won't take nearly as long to complete and will actually provide the prospective recruits a lot more benefit.

60,000: That's a lot of people.

Cool!

Even with the $300m investment, Arizona State will still have a stadium that is inferior to what the University of Phoenix has on the other side of town.

Yes, and do you know what a mess that is? It would be like building a new Broncos stadium in a Commerce City 20 miles from downtown. Not only is the stadium far as hell from downtown, they also built it about as far away from the income-base that they could - Scottsdale is a 40-minute trip

The new design is fine - I live here and see the stadium every day on the way to work. If the gudam city had ever gotten its **** together, both teams (Cards and Devils) could play in a stadium in downtown Phoenix.

They should have gone with the plan that would have put a stadium, hotels, businesspark and convention center complex in Mesa right next to the reservation (gambling right next door).

I would bet that some of the wealthy/powerful in town owned property near where they put it and made an absolute killing.

The Cards stadium is getting gambling right next door - some nearby property was swapped with a reservation and they have won court cases to put a casino there. At least, the last I heard it was still a go.

FWIW, I don't care for the Cards stadium - it has a bizarre spine down the middle that sort of interrupts the view.

I think it's fine, but I'm guessing twenty years from now we'll look at it like we look at 1970's decor now. It certainly was not built to be a "classic" stadium like Soldier Field, Lambeau, RFK, etc.

Of all the adjectives I could think of to describe RFK, "classic" is not one of them.

Does this mean we can't sit and count the rivets on the jets as they pass right over your head.

Wouldn't hurt my feeling if I don't hear and see the fireworks that are launched on the hills outside the stadium. It really got old after last years visit.
