Bench Montez (9-14 edition)

Says both.
Agree that the prospect of counting on Noyer should Montez get hurt wasn't comforting but he was an experienced QB. Moving him says that the coaches see the young guys as better options even with playing time.
The point is probably moot. Tucker's recruit/grad transfer will be the starter next year anyway. Different direction for the position once Montez is gone.

Yeah, they had to get the QB depth chart cleaned up and it helps add depth to Safety as well. Grad Transfer is likely coming and then I'm hoping Lewis is given a long look as well next Spring/Summer/Fall. Either way, I'm looking forward to a true QB competition for the first time in a decade next offseason.

Currently, Montez is not better than any of those list above, except he has a stronger arm and quick release than many on this list. As another poster put it, SM is an enigma. Unfortunately, he has not been exploiting his strong arm and quick release. Also, he has not found comfort in the pocket, nor developed his pocket skills very well. SM short arming throws this year is a red flag of sorts. This could be the system he is playing in, play-calling, the totally inconsistent OL or the combination thereof.

In general, SM has given the Buffs a chance to win many games even when he has not played all that great. It is interesting in some road games he lights things up (therefore, crowd noise does not automatically shut him down), in others, the game is well "a stinker." Also, SM is pretty mobile compared to many Pro QB's. For SM's pro-prospects it will be a team that takes a 4-8 round flyer on him, and he shows enough to make a practice squad or 3rd string. I do see some upside. SM has improved his long throws, fades, and shorter throws, so there is growth there. The tell will be if year-round coaching can unleash his gun-slinging and improve his pocket presence.

Agreed and perhaps they saw the safety change as a great use of Noyer's talents. I'm glad Noyer stayed with the Buffs. I think it really shows good will, when the staff does not run kids off, rather they have ample opportunity to stay and complete there college degree.
I watched Noyer on STs. Pretty good athleticism. Wants to play.

Either Stenstrom or Lytle will end up with less than 75 snaps in their career.

Maybe. If Lewis is ready to come in next year and start then we are that much faster into transforming to what MT wants.

The grad transfer thing for the most part is fantasy. There isn't exactly a line-up of outstanding QBs entering the portal. There are guys who aren't good enough to play for their existing teams or have other issues.

The ones we would want have plenty of options and will usually pick a place where they have what they see as a better chance to win big.

Going to be hard for them because if Lewis is ready the system is going to change and the staff will bring in the next QB for that system.

Wouldn't surprise me to see either one of them leave for someplace they can play if that happens.

I hope he can be coached into some improvement.
Regrettably, I cannot imagine a scenario where he improves with coaching. The first game he ever played he was lights-out good against Oregon in Eugene. Since then, the more coaching and experience he receives (and he's received a lot including the Manning Passing Academy) the more he seems to regress. Sadly, I'm beginning to think the problem isn't with the coaching; the problem is with Montez. He doesn't seem to have the ability to assimilate everything the way he should.

Indeed it would. I’m hoping, but not holding my breath.
That speaks for about everybody here, I'd think. We all want to see him play at a high level, but consistently, not a throw here and there. The team doesn't need rattled Montez, they need him to step the hell up and perform. You can be a leader without being all vocal about it. He's got 9 games to figure out whether he wants that responsibility, less than that if he doesn't pick it up.

For those with a 247 sub, there’s a good thread with GIFs that break down Montez’s pocket presence against AFA. Shocking how many opportunities he missed
I don’t have a subscription, but several times he had guys wide open yet opted to throw into coverage to a different receiver. It was frustrating to watch.

This one possibly cost the Buffs 4 points... KD is open immediately on the crossing route, as is the other receiver crossing the other way. Fades back for no reason and throws an awful pass off his back foot, per usual.

Clean pocket, Viska on the double move in the slot is an 80 yard TD. Instead... throws into double coverage and gets it picked off

Check the top of the screen... This is a blown coverage by AFA and a likely 70 yard TD if he hits Brady Russell who is immediately open in the flat

Here's "Good Montez" late in the 4th quarter where he actually steps up in the pocket and delivers a good ball to Viska.

You haven't been paying attention.

The Pirate kicked those other teams outta the Air Raid Club because they ran the ball too much.

Falk and Minshew are the only true Air Raid qb's.

Can Viska throw the ball? If MT won't sub someone for Montez, let's go with the wildcat 50% of the time. But, they can't all be keepers off the right side. Teach him a little option, try a few short passes. At this point, I don't see SM leading us to more than 2 additional wins, so what's there to lose?

Yes, agree. Misnomer.

Route trees are very similar. Emphasis on pace and running are not.

But the question is whether Montez is better than any of those listed.

Ugh, thanks for posting that peckerwood. :D

You're asking if Steven Montez is a better player than two Heisman winners/#1 overall picks, an NFL MVP, and another QB who played in the Super Bowl last year. Allen, Keenum, Rudolph, Falk and Minshew were all better college players than him and have all carved out a niche as fringe starters/backups in the NFL. Of course he isn't better than any of them. What does that have to do with anything, though? We don't run Air Raid.

These are starting QBs in the NFL these days (forget the AR angle). I am merely pointing out starters and wondering if Montez is better than any of them. My leanings are no, like yours, but I am repeatedly confused by Montez and eternally amazed at starters in the NFL.

The reason I lost my **** vs AF was "the fade". The fade, likely related to the pounding he took in '17 and '18. Three QB coaches have worked on this and it's not seemingly improved.

If he can't make a major mental improvement here, my assessment during the AF game still stands.

Definitely what I saw fro the stands. Especially the Brady Russell miss. Frustrating.
