Big12 Considering 1 Billion From Private Equity Investment Firm

Youtube guy, Greg Flugar,
Who's been right about USC going to Big10 and Colorado being the first of 4 corner schools to jump to Big12, has some scoop that
private equity $$$ spilling into college football is imminent. Not December or January but to keep an eye out in February.

There's one particular school that's ready to make the dive. If they do, could this start a domino effect ?
Many schools are afraid that if they don't follow they will be left behind.
Sounds like things are about to get crazy.

*whew* Good thing this money is coming from PE firms. If there's one thing those guys always do, it's improve the organizations in which they invest!

This is a different kind of PE, and no program/school is going to just partner with a monster firm, it needs to be someone that is doing it like an NFL Franchise purchase would be. I will continue to go back to the Bundesliga model where the school/fans/state own the program, period, they have ultimate control, but for the betterment and competitiveness of the operation, bringing in solid investment dollars and expertise is valuable.
Not only could a chunk of money come in, but an ongoing payment of 51% of the net proceeds would be due to the school to operate the other sports, and this could be repeated with the Basketball teams (mens and women's)

Robert Smith has been seen with Prime and the team at his Fishing lodge and in other circles. He and other very prominent people love what Prime is doing to empower and mentor young men, and the Colorado Football Program is probably the next most valuable thing in Colorado besides the Broncos, Nuggets, Avs, and probably more valuable than the Rapids

major updates today- I haven't watched this yet (damn work gets in the way) however the Big12 is involved

The institution who's ready to accept private equity IS in the Big12. They are internally ready to go and has the freedom to pull the trigger if offered.
They want the conference to be involved in private equity but would go on their own as well. This school can't be be mentioned at this time, but he hopes
he can in January.
He did say that West Virginia is pro private equity but isn't the one above ready to do it.
Big12 not unified on this ..yet. Nor is the ACC.

Verizon is one of the big names being bantered who could be involved $$ wise.

Makes me wonder what side of the fence CU is on. I'd have to think the private schools like Baylor, TCU and BYU might be the holdouts ??

There's talk about FOMO .... this is all about fear

How many priority points does one need to sit in on the annual budget session with PE X RG X university bureaucrats?

But you sold your soul to Satan.

I didn't know it was THAT Satan!

Why would Colorado ever permit the Big12 to lock in PE that would be tying us to this lesser conference?
CU, Utah, BYU, and Kansas want to keep moving up and not let the Big12 decide our future

Yeah. If there's some sort of GOR-like thing for all 16 schools as part of a PE firm investing in the Big 12, I don't think that's gonna fly.

Explain the value of a conference not named SEC or B1G? If the top brands from the Big12, ACC, and maybe even Notre Dame blended with a Pro style self operation, it would be the 3rd Power conference

We really going to trust that a bunch of university chancellors are going to know what they are getting into when making a deal with a bunch of PE sharks?

Also, given ESPN’s woes, I’m not sure we can trust an indefinite “number go up” assumption when it comes to future TV revenue, and the B12 and ACC will be the first to feel that given the relative difference in ratings compared to the P12 now that most of the top brands have been sucked away.

And even if they manage to do that and get a good deal with the PE guys, in the second step we need to trust them to use that one off payment wisely so the overall pile grows.

As for the 2nd part, the price of sports TV rights in the bigger European countries has largely stagnated in the last few years and as I previously said in this thread, there are cautionary tales to be learned from here when it comes to getting in bed with private equity firms.
