It's viewed by those who don't wear black-and-gold glasses as more than just a football game. It's an event, a time for college football to take center stage and overshadow even the almighty NFL in the state's marquee venue. Only the University of Colorado and many of its fans don't see it that way.

It was Mike Bohn, CU's athletic director, who pulled the plug on the Rocky Mountain Showdown.

CSU needs CU. You'd think they'd be talking about CSU football right now. But they are still pissing and moaning over the CU game. Way to go little brother. :thumbsup:

As a CSU alum, Knudson has long hated CU. This is just one more instance of them playing the victim, a role they are quite familiar with.

A couple holes to poke in his theory that CU should have bought out Miami to play CSU at Invesco:

1. He has no idea what the buyout of Miami would cost CU. These vary by contract and he has no idea if it would even be viable for CU to do so.

2. Nationally televised games have netted the Buffs $300-400k in the past. I would assume this is still the case.

3. At this late date, is anyone else even available if the Buffs wanted to move the games around?

His other comments about the financial split of the Invesco game could well be a factor as well. It is quite possible that CU doesn't feel the 55% split is adequate any more. Any other team would certainly demand a far greater split from CSU for a neutral field game like the RMS.

But at the end of the day, this is about sour grapes and wanting to be able to force CU to act in CSU's best interests. Hold your breath, Mark, I'm sure if you turn blue Bohn will give in and give you what you want.
 
Here are my thoughts on this issue:

CSU needs this game at Invesco far more than we need this game at all. Is Mike Bohn to blame for making a smart move for his athletic department? I suppose so but blame isn't the right word I think. As far as Knudson's reasoning about the choice goes, I think that a nationally televised game against a team from an area where we're gaining an increasing recruiting presence (see Speedy and Vigo) could prove itself to be well worth some money. That has little to do with the RMS anyway though.

As far as the holding out to sweeten the deal thing goes, CSU fans should be overjoyed about this. If the schools can get more money out of sponsors or the Denver Metro Sports thingy then all the better. I think CSU was retarded not to schedule their game in 2010 at Invesco. If they're all up in arms about us moving the game then why did they move it to a stadium where they make peanuts compared to Invesco? I think CU is just trying to look out for its best interests while CSU is just mad that we don't want to play in the sandbox they picked. In Boulder or otherwise, they make a lot more money with this game than without it. For us, there's not a whole lot of incentive to play CSU when we could play another team and get about the same payoff (publicity, money, reputation, etc.) or more.

Finally, I think Bohn would be stupid not to listen to the needs/wants of season ticket holders. These people are the program's bread and butter and without them where would we be? CSU would do the same thing in our position. This is nothing more than sour grapes on their part. On another side note, I heard somewhere that it's a Big 12 requirement that teams have at least 6 home games. This sounded somewhat fishy to me but perhaps that's something that's factoring into this as well? All of this is just my opinion/stuff I've heard but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in.
 
P.S. I think this guy is an idot anyway. "Sighting his team's need to play a sixth home game in 2009..." Did Mike Bohn see this need (sight) or did he refer to it (cite)? I have zero tolerance for stupid grammatical errors, especially among journalists who should most definitely know better. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't have expected any less from an aggie...

He's not a journalist. He's a washed up has been pitcher; if anyone who was half assed in his prime can ever be washed up.:sad2:
 
Mark Knutson is in no position to be lecturing other people about how they should conduct themselves or their businesses.
 
Don't feel like reading the article because I know its a CSU slant..


I blame both parties equally.. CU should be able to schedule 6 home games each year easily and still play CSU in Denver every year..


And I disagree with the fact that CSU needs CU more.. I think they both need each other.. Both schools (especially CU) get a lot of coverage in the papers and I'm assuming the networks during the lead up to the game.. I doubt CU got as much attention this last week playing EWU than they did the week before..

The more attention for CU the better... Besides, I think we'll be having the upper hand on CSU for awhile now, so no reason to pass up the opportunity to take these clowns to the woodshed every year.. I want payback for 1999,2000 and 2002 games..

A few things that he mentioned that should get more attention. Season ticket holders being displaced. This isn't like being moved a few rows up or down, or going from 35 yard line to 25 yard line. When you move somone from 30 yard line at Folsom to 5th level corner endzone at Invesco they are going to complain. It happened to me 3 years.

Also the Metro Sports Authority. They have this game that is generating lots of $ for Denver, and if they need to share more to have the game in Denver I think they should. One thing CU has always said about this game is they don't feel that it is fair to the local Boulder merchants that miss out on revenue from a game in Boulder.

As somebody who is far away from Boulder and the Denver media, I will say that this isn't true. There is a lot more press in the Denver/Boulder papers leading up to the CU-CSU game but outside that region there's nothing. So, is the hype of that game worth it for the local recruiting? I'll leave that up to the people who know better.

From a national perspective, the only thing that matters is wanting to see CU on TV. As long as CU replaces the CSU game with one that's big enough to get TV coverage, I don't really care one way or the other.

Exactly. If CU replaced the CSU game with a BCS opponent there'd most certainly be more coverage of the game in at least one other geographic area of the country. As it is now, the only articles and coverage that appear are in the Colorado media.

Hey Mark, what happened to all the support for college football this past weekend?

CSU-20,000? CU 46,000?

I guess all those "pat myself on the back" for supporting 1 game fans went out and supported other things.

Spend more time calling out csu fans, you guys have nothing to say.

It doesn't even have to be a BCS team. I think the Miami of Ohio game is paying dividends. Just need to play someone where a local broadcast, doesn't have to be national, will be in a "want to recruit" area. The local talent will see us whether or not we play CSU.

I think this weekend is an excellent argument for not scheduling 1-AA teams (aside from the fact that both CU and CSU would not have beaten truly tough BCS competition playing the way they did Saturday). I know CU was doing everything possible to get people in the seats to see Eastern Washington, and I suspect CSU did similar things to get people to come to the Sacramento St. game. In this college football marketplace those games are just extremely tough sells... :huh:

Amazing that both teams have played another game and somebody is still lamenting the "away from Invesco" decision. Frickin let it go already. Done deal....nuf said.
