Boise State files complaint against MWC - may leave

Under its last contract, MWC had non-equal revenue distribution with Boise State getting more than other conference members. Contract is up and the MWC informed BSU that things would be equal this time. So BSU filed a complaint and is exploring options.

Main options there is speculation on:

1. Boise State and MWC settle things and this becomes almost a non-story.
2. Boise State replaces UConn as the 12th AAC member. (Also some ideas that AAC could grab SDSU & AFA, too, and go to 14.)
3. Boise State goes independent. They'd need a place to park non-revenue sports and a media deal worth at least $5M a year.
4. Boise State leads a breakup of the MWC, forming a new conference with some of the better teams while maybe raiding C-USA/ Sun Belt to get into Texas.
5. Big 12 or Pac-12 makes a surprising move by adding Boise State and another team (very unlikely).

Seems like a situation where everyone is overplaying their hand. Boise would not work as an independent. They will not have as much traction playing in the aac and will see a significant uptick in travel expenses across their sports. On the other side the MWC losses their flagship TV draw.
I work in Boise some. Their fan base sees themselves as a national player. They don’t focus on the academic disparity. This could also be strategic to keep donors happy. It is the only show in town and the fans are very invested.

They are crazy. More people live in my neighborhood than live in Boise. There's no way a network is going to pony up enough money for them to survive as an independent. An independent BSU would be closer to NMSU than BYU.

I assume this is just a negotiating tactic to try to keep their larger share coming. Texas-like, but without the actual position of strength.

The real reason why the MW did this to Boise State is that the AAC probably has moved on from BSU and won't be inviting that school. BSU might not have any leverage at all.

Boise isn’t going independent. They will either settle with the Mtn West or bolt to the AAC.

As for travel costs, whatever. This would be football only. You have six or seven away games a year. Is a charter plane to Houston, Dallas, Cincinnati, Memphis, or Florida really that much more than San Jose, San Diego, Fort Fun, or Albuquerque? For smaller jets, it’s a couple thousand an hour, so maybe $15,000 per hour for a big charter. In total, you’re talking maybe $200,000 a year in extra plane fare. Plus, you may make up some costs elsewhere (lodging, non revenue sports join Big Sky which is closer, etc.).

D2 pgm who cut football to save money a few years ago;

According to AD Card and records obtained from the university, $95,000 was spent on travel this past year for the men’s basketball team. The softball team spent about $87,000 on travel.

“Travel costs consistently go up whether you are having to travel further or its just inflation,” Card said. “Plane tickets are more expensive than they used to be.”

While that may be the case, Western is spending exponentially more on airfare than it was just five years ago. In 2013 and 2014, Western athletics spent just $4,904.16 on plane tickets for 11 flights, according to records obtained via public records request. In 2015, that number jumped to $38,818.96 for 26 flights. 2015 was Card’s first year as athletic director.

From there, Western airfare expenses continued to skyrocket. In 2016, Western spent $143,325.23 and a year later it spent $259, 031.75. In the last five years Western has spent $543, 916.10 on plane tickets alone, according to the records.

It’s not just at Western that the cost of transporting athletic teams is impacting budgets. At Division II Central Washington University, 51 percent of its athletic budget is dedicated to travel expenditures.

Part of this could also be Boise State leveraging to get other concessions. They've been the prime time game from the MWC almost every week, which has really screwed with their home schedule while also making their road travel more difficult. Almost always play at night and it has negatively impacted attendance. If they're not getting a larger share of conference media dollars, why should they accept that?

Boise State's athletic department would go bankrupt if they went independent. Boise also isn't getting the deal they had with the MW with the AAC. They obviously carry the MW, so obviously a ploy to see who cracks first.

AAC's new deal pays each member about $7M a year from media rights. They also have non-equal sharing, so the programs that have made NY6 bowls and/or NCAA tourneys can make quite a bit more. It would be a much better deal than an equal share of the MWC pie.

Agree with this take.

Boise may not have many other options. The AAC doesn't mind expanding their footprint but this would be a long stretch and while the Boise market is growing fast it still doesn't add a huge value to their package. That same limited media market makes them less viable than BYU as an independent.

The MWC needs them though because that limited media market is still important and Boise is their biggest national name for conference credibility.

I could see them coming to a compromise that on the surface calls for even distribution of revenues making the other schools happy but also including an extra payout based on appearances on the partner networks which would mean that Boise would get some extra for all the odd scheduled games plus make some extra for bringing the conference exposure if any of their OOC games end up in the conference packages.

People are getting too focused on local media market. Often the bigger factor is the regional or national draw when ESPN has a team play. The AAC would significantly enhance its inventory of games that would be a national draw with the programs like UCF, Houston, Cincinnati, Temple and Memphis which are often ranked. When those teams played Boise State, it would draw eyeballs nationally on par with a decent P5 game broadcast (even if BSU wasn't ranked). Also, it would make the NY6 appearance a near-lock for the AAC and significantly enhance its argument that we should have 6 Power conferences with the AAC moving into the spot that the Big East once occupied.

Edit: Similarly, this is why NU was so valuable to the B1G. It had zero to do with the greater Lincoln media market.
