Bowl projections

So wanting to see the Buffs win the Pac-12 and go to the Rose Bowl after 10 years of **** is moronic? Got it.
Let's not confuse wanting to be in the CFP over the Rose Bowl with being upset with CU potentially playing in the Rose Bowl. I would be ecstatic about a P12 Championship and a Rose Bowl birth.... Just not more ecstatic as I would be with a CFP invite.

Count me in on the Rose Bowl vote. Better chance to finish on a 'high' note in the Rose Bowl than against Bama in Atlanta. Better story ending for The Rise video series and a great way to improve our recruiting. Coaches saying: "With a player of your talent level, we probably would have gotten into the playoffs..." seems like a pretty effective message to me. Continue to build the base level of talent, the CFP's will come.

Or in 2001 CCG in Dallas vs a Chris Simms/Major Applewhite's Longhorn supporters.

I was at that game. I'm guessing the mix was, at best, 60-40 UT fans. Maybe 2/3rds 1/3rd.

I'll never forget trying to walk down the bleachers towards the location where the players were going to sing the fight song with the fans. Stadium security blocked my access and gave strict orders to vacate the premises now they the game was over. There was little time to savor the victory. The lights to the field and scoreboard couldnt have been shut down any faster. I hated how the NFL stadium security force treated CU fans. And I still do.

I loved the outcome on the field. But really thought the fan experience sucked hard.

Using the 2001 B12 CCG to make your case doesnt work. No way a CFP experience in the Atlanta Falcons NFL dome stadium can beat the Rose Parade, hanging out in the mild California weather, tailgating on the adjacent golf course alongside an absolutely enormous CU fan contingency.

It would be even sweeter to exact revenge on Michigan in the Rose Bowl. A big part of that 2001 B12CCG story line was how the Longhorns beat CU earlier in that season, and how our backup QB Bobbie Pesavento settled the score.

Unless you are a Texas homer, I always thought CU's Pessavento/Hodge QB story was needlessly overshadowed by the whole Simms/Applegate controversy.

A bowl game? It's the freakin' Rose Bowl. Jesus Christ.

The Rose Bowl isn't just some random bowl game.
Lose the nostalgia of the Rose Bowl for a minute and realize that, in the current landscape of college football, it is just another bowl game. Yes, it's a much more prestigious bowl game with a much higher payout, but it simply doesn't mean anything anymore. I honestly can't understand how anyone is seriously arguing for playing for the Rose Bowl over a National Championship. :confused:o_O

That's how it coming off, surprisingly. I understand the excitement of possibly getting in the playoff (even though I think Bama would win handily), but for people to turn up their noses at the Rose Bowl and call it just "a bowl game" is insane to me.

According to 538 we have close to a 50% shot at the CFP if we win out. I don't think we would have a good chance of beating Bama, but we would have a chance. I would love a trip to the Rose Bowl, but I'd rather take a chance, however slim it may be, at arguably the greatest story in college sports in my lifetime. And that is exactly what it would be if we made the CFP and somehow won it.

I don't think anyone wants the Rose Bowl over a national championship - I suspect the people advocating for the Rose Bowl are operating under the assumption that there's almost zero chance we get past Alabama in the semi-final. So if that is their assumption then I can see why Rose Bowl Champions >>> Semi-Final loser.

This guy, Larry Culpepper. is the closest thing to CPO nostalgia and tradition.

Given your stance, you might consider using it as your avatar.

Brush it off as nostalgia if you like, but I'm telling you, as someone who is from the west coast (where a huge number of our recruits come from), the Rose Bowl is a HUGE deal here and winning it would be much better for us, for "The Rise", than getting boat raced in Atlanta.

Either way CU fans should be rooting for this team to go out and punch their ticket to Pasadena. If the CFP committee chooses the Buffs to go fight Bama in ATL then so be it.

If CU goes 11-3 this year with a Conference Title and its only losses being on the road to the elite of college football, then I think that would be widely considered an extremely successful season.

That's understandable but you can't win a Natty without being in the playoff. If CU ever wants to reach the mountain top again, we're going to have to be OK with playing 2 or even 3 games in a row against top 6-8 teams in the country. Why not root for that chance to happen this year?

I just think it's insane that these people think we can win the Rose Bowl if it's a sure thing Bama would boatrace us, heck many seem to suggest we'd be the favorites. Alabama is not much better than Michigan or Ohio State, if we're going to get boatraced by Bama then we won't have a chance against UM/tOSU.

Again, if people see zero chance of beating Alabama and thus zero chance of a national title, then maybe you would understand the appeal of the Rose Bowl.

I doubt anyone who thinks we'd have a punchers chance against Bama would prefer the Rose over the CFP.

There is a certain fatalistic tone that seems to imply this year as some kind of anomaly.

No one is going to fuss over a CFP invite. If they are selected, they go to Atlanta and compete for a chance to play on the title game.

No one is going to fuss about CU having another shot at the CFP next year and the year after that.

I can't wait until CU gets ranked #1 in the country in November and is respected as a juggernaut.

Patience and odds are our friends here.

Shek is an NFL fan. There is no other explanation.

College football is all about tradition. The Rose Bowl is the greatest College Football tradition. The best 30 for 30 story about the 2016 Buffs is the one that ends up Roses.

But...but...but...National Championship is a better story!

Shut up.

Let's play a hypothetical.

Fast forward 11 days and the Buffs are Pac-12 Champs.

We survey the players and coaches to ask whether they'd rather play in the Rose Bowl or the Playoff.

If anyone answered Rose Bowl he should be locked in Mike Leach's shed.

I think this is the first post in the thread actually suggesting a Rose Bowl win >> National Championship.

Shut up.

It's not nostalgic, it's parochial. We are currently drawing kids from SEC country, and there is so much talent there - we can do better. The national stage is obviously much bigger than the west coast, and just as obviously better for the program.

Look. Winning a National Champion would be sweet. But the playoffs are only about an outcome. That one team. I watched the playoffs last year. I don't remember, other than Alabama who was in them. Sad, I know. Maybe Oklahoma with a loss in the first round to an ACC team? I don't know. Maybe it was Texas Tech. I don't give a ****.

But you can bet your sweet ass that I remember that Stanford kicked the **** out of Iowa in the Rose Bowl. Because it's the ****ing Rose Bowl, and it's about a lot more than just an outcome that was developed to satiate NFL fans who also like college football. The Rose Bowl is what college football is about. A grander experience, and big tradition.

I'm not saying that the playoffs haven't made college football better. The first year, we saw how flawed the polls were when the Ducks (the Pac is a weak conference that doesn't play defense), stomped the **** out of FSU. But I'm not so warm to them yet, that they have more value than the mother****ing Rose Bowl.

I get that the playoffs are a bigger stage. I get that you want the best opportunities for your team. But I value the broader experience, because it writes the better story. In my opinion, if you love college football, the Rose Bowl is the bigger experience.

It's tough to get Rose Bowl on TV east of the Mississippi.

Reason #396 why we belong in the Pac12 - we value the Rose Bowl. It's not called the Grand Daddy of them all for no reason. It's a special bowl game with a great history and I can understand why Buff fans want to see the Buffs become part of that history.

There are only two ways to win a National Championship. 1) make the playoff and win two games; 2) end the season ranked 5 or 6, win your bowl game and bitch for the next 20 years about how the committee ****ed you and you were definitely the best team that season.

I'm good with either.

How about Penn State?
