Buff specific NIL Thread

Below is from a poster on 247 who is trying to put together some NIL funds for Buff players. I believe he has some connections within the AD and is working with CU compliance on it. I got his permission to share here in case anyone wants to get involved and contribute.

Just got off of a great call regarding NIL stuff with a current buff. He gave me permission to post some stuff on here. Obviously there are certain things I can’t say, but what I can say is college football is no longer just college football. Especially with transfers.

FWIW- this buff I spoke with said, “I had offers to leave CU too. But I believe in CU and I love this place. I know this team and these guys have what it takes to be successful. Just takes everyone buying in. the guys that are still here are fully ready to work and take CU to the top of the pac 12”

Here’s the rundown. The athletic department is working very hard to find ways to help our student athletes. BUT, to remain competitive, we as fans can get involved as much as we want and the players can work directly with fans. We are behind the 8-ball as it comes to NIL- and that’s quite obvious.

Example based on what was said in another post-100 people on this board can chip in $5 a month, and we can go get someone a great car and all the player has to do is tweet at the car dealership and there is no violation of NIL.

It is a free for all.

But one thing I have in mind, I know this board is hungry to help out players as much as we can. We have to organize a plan to reach out the the CU athletic department, and explain how much we as fans want to be involved in helping our players with NIL.

I had multiple 1 on 1 meetings with Rick George during my time at CU. And he’s been nothing but incredibly helpful and willing to listen and help any CU alum he can.

If anyone wants to work with me on organizing somewhat of a fan NIL board to present to the athletic department, I’d love to work with some of you on making this happen. Our players deserve our support.

Go buffs. If anyone wants to contact me directly my email is ross.brenner001@gmail.com

I posted a similar idea on the NIL thread a while back suggesting Allbuffs be used as an NIL Marketplace so to speak. Allowing players to come and post with requests and fans/business owners offering money. It seems like something that could benefit both athletes and Allbuffs itself. This guy seems to have taken much more initiative than may single post and also has much better connections than I do, so I'd follow him.

Here’s the problem for me - I can’t think of a single player on this roster who I would be motivated to come out of pocket to pay. Every player doesn’t deserve a free car - in fact the vast majority don’t. Maybe my attitude exemplifies CU’s larger problem but that’s how I feel.

If you want to tell me JT Daniels is considering CU? Great, I’m in. Some blue chip DE we need to keep or add through transfer? Where do I send the money? But $5 a month to keep the Keith Miller’s of the world at CU? If that’s what it takes, I think I’m out.

I view it as a shift to some degree. 1. In general outside if the normal football tickets and gear I think CU does a poor job of getting donations from the average fan and 2. Some fans may want to shift what they previously donated to an athletic fund to a specific player. 3. Some small businesses may choose to sponsor a player rather than the school directly. And it think the players influence, plus the amplification by CU and other fans could actually benefit that business.

And least in the scope of CU, where we likely aren't paying anyone millions. For instance WSU was able to get their QB transfer a new truck.

I think a coordinated effort would require people to give up control of where the money goes and give that control to the staff/AD. If Dorrell said, “we need $50k to get JT Daniels” and had the fund to pull from, that’d be something worth contributing to.

Yeah I get it and I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to contribute to this, I’m just feeling like all the money I’ve spent on this program the last two decades has generated very little return for me outside a couple lightning in a bottle seasons and the program is dogs**t and this suggestion is just to spend more money and hope things get better. That’s not a good pitch for me.

Sure but again contributing money because we don’t want to lose Jake Wiley or a MLC is not where I want to spend more money.

Well, you’d have to somewhat trust the staff (I know, I know) in determining who they believe they need to keep and therefore offer NIL deals. Something like this can’t be left up to the fans to choose, IMO.

It’s also not just about keeping current players, but bringing in new recruits and transfers.

Sure that's a somewhat separate problem. That CU hasn't proven they know what to do with the players or money they've gotten in the past. But on the other side, where unless you have major $ who wouldn't be able to tell the AD what to do with your money, in this case you would be able to choose (mostly, you'd probably have to trust someone like the Allbuffs mods not to spend it on H and B). It won't be for everyone, for sure but I think it will appeal to some and give the average fan a sense of directly benefiting and influencing the program.

I'd contribute to this. I'd rather give 'directly' to the athlete . . . I give a lot of money to support the overhead of the athletic department and would like to know I'm helping the athletes more.

Maybe partly use as an 'incentive'. The winner of the Allbuffs Buffalo Heart award gets a bonus.

Yeah, maybe this is just the line for me where I’m finding it harder to really want the program to compete with big boy programs if this is what is required. Maybe I’ll feel differently in August.

I like the idea of giving directly to the athlete too, but unless you’re a heavy hitter able to come in with a fat check designated for one guy, I don’t see that working.

This is basically crowdfunding/gofundme for CU’s NIL department. There would need to be some kind of fiduciary involved making sure donors money was going to the players and not the general AD fund.

I was thinking of an AllBuffs / BuffStampede / concerned fans group fund.

Warning: Rant

Many gave money for facilities that were the silver bullet to our recruiting woes. Many gave money that was ultimately funneled into an 18MM fully guaranteed contract for Karl Dorrell, a man as inspiring as a used Q-Tip. We’ve watched as the stadium goes unnamed. We’ve watched losing season after losing season without the AD engaging us beyond a ticket renewal or asking us for more money to spend on terrible contracts

Now that we’ve finally arrived in the era of paying players, who in our fan base is left to pay? What is the motivation to pay?

I’m in my 20s and run a biz but haven’t heard a peep from the AD. Not even a call about my postseason survey in which I wrote a lengthy novel avoiding negativity and focusing on positive recommendations/thoughts in hopes they’d actually contact me. If they call me and tell me I need to pay players, what’s the motivation? I still have never seen us win a bowl game. Why should I pay our 3* roster to turn in another losing season under coach Cardboard?

I think 20 yrs of negligence and poor spending have really alienated the fan base, especially those around my age. I’m one of the only actual CU fans I know that isn’t old, much less one that would pay for tickets or NIL.

Ross is a great guy btw, went to school with him and glad he’s stepping up to the plate to get something going

I would love to see a Buffs Forever Player Corporation concept come up and have them work to develop profitable things that all the players could be a part of for both NIL benefit and also business acumen development. When a player comes to CU, they are able to be members of this corporation and can participate in revenues. Teach the kids to fish

I'm steamed about this.

In case anyone was wondering, the Allbuffs twitter account had more than one person coming back and saying CU couldn't coordinate NIL payments because it "broke the law" or some variation of that. That kind of dissemination had to come from somewhere, and anyone want to bet against it coming from the AD/RG?

Mal-****in-practice.

It was attributed to Lance Carl iirc.

Good thing RG was on the NCAA committee this year so he could be in position to make sure CU was in position to be ahead of the game on NIL.

This. This is amazing. WTF RG.
Absolutely infuriating! We lost top players because George and company are incompetent morons that don't give a ****.

So... we had a uh intern. Named, uh, Vance Karl, that's uh Karl with a "K."

And this intern, Vance, had an old NCAA regulation book, and he, um, well this a bit embarrassing, but he thought NCAA rules were actual "laws."

And he read those rules and he reported that the university coordinating with boosters was against the law. So, um yeah.

We've got it straightened out now, and we're moving forward to bigger and better things.

...

Did we fire the intern? Oh no, he was doing something beyond his skill level and knowledge, it was our fault for tasking him with that.

We've specifically assigned the task of determining if something is legal or not to a real lawyer, trained to do that sort of thing. Vance is still on the job, and doing a great job too!
