Buffs at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships (June 7th-10th)

Interesting team race overall. Oregon came in considered the HEAVY favorite, but their favorite in the 200M just fell before the finish, and now it looks like the point race will be VERY close, with Georgia possibly pulling the major upset while pretty much scoring ALL their points in field and multi events.
I think Oregon needs to win the 4x400 to win

So- looks like it's going to be a great theater of a finish to the team title. Georgia is up by 8.2 points but isn't in the last event, so favored Oregon will win ONLY IF they get the win (which equals 10 points) in the 4X400M relay. They won their preliminary heat, but only had the 5th fastest time.

Bill Simmons made a quote several years back that I will paraphrase.

I can get in to almost any sport where it is the highest stakes and the participants are selling out to achieve a championship.

I enjoyed watching CU represent and the other races as well (even if OU took the women's title).

Should mention the 4X400M result still isn't official, as there's a protest pending.

Georgia evidently made 2 protests over the 4X400M win by Oregon, but both now have officially been denied, and the Ducks are the champions.

Article from late yesterday about the final day of the championships-

"
Eugene, Ore. – The University of Colorado freshman Madie Boreman finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final on day four of the 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships here Saturday at Hayward Field.
...
Final Women Team Standings
The women finished in 12th place overall with 16 total points. This marks the team's best finish since 2005 when the team finished 12th as well.
...
QUOTES (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"We had a good day. I am happy with how the women did on this final day. Dani had a good run in the 1,500 meters. Just a sophomore finishing fifth, the race was packed up and had a wild last lap, a couple girls ran a 61, and Dani had a 62. But, she was ninth a year ago and fifth this year, she keeps moving up. Great time from two days ago, the 4:10 is the fastest collegiate time in the country. So good day for Dani and a really great year."

"Madie came in on nobody's form chart, had a wonderful trial round two days ago at 9:51, the fastest CU freshman ever. But found another gear today and ran with the leaders, gunned down second place in the last 100 meters or so. 9:46.48, again the fastest freshman at Colorado ever, and points for the team."

"Erin Clark came back after running the 10,000, very few people do that well. And she did it well. Didn't get any points for us, but she did get an All-American honor and ran her fastest time of the year. She was running against a lot of runners with fresher legs. End of the day, the women were 12th, that is a high finish for us. We are really pleased with that."

Also, a few post-race video interviews with various Buffs-

Finally, in her interview, Dani Jones mentions she's going right up the road from Eugene to run today at the Portland Track Festival. Looking at the entries list, looks like she may be joined by Ben Saarel and Nick Harris (who didn't make the NCAA championships, but was the Pac 12 champion in the 800M). Don't know the timing, but assume this maybe the last time Mr. Harris, for whom this is his senior season, will be allowed to have "Colorado" by his name in an Entries List.

Just QUICKLY eyeballing the entries list (sorry in advance if I'm missing anyone), there are also some #Foreverbuffs entered- Sara Sutherland, Maddie Alm, and Aric Van Halen.

Not sure what the motivation would be necessarily for all their entries, but assume, in addition to just getting to have fun and compete, for at least some assume the goal might also be to make the standard times for the upcoming U.S. Championships and/ or World Championships. (Also, even if they don't make the standards, some might get invited to the U.S. Championships with stronger times if not enough runners have made the U.S. Championships standard times.)

A few links regarding this meet-

Schedule - http://www.portlandtrack.com/schedule

Heat Sheets - https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...3/2017+Portland+Track+Day+2+-+Heat+Sheets.pdf

If I'm reading the schedule and heats sheet accurately-
Van Halen is in Section 2 of the 3K steeplechase, scheduled for a 6:50 PM MT start.
Harris is in Section 2 of the "Men 800 Meter Run High Performance", which looks to be starting 7:40 PM MT.
Alm is in Section 2 of the "Women 1500 Meter Run High Performance ", scheduled for a 8:05 PM MT start.
Jones and Sutherland are in Section 1 of the "Women 1500 Meter Run High Performance ", scheduled for a 8:25 PM MT start.
Saarel in Section 1 of the " Men 1500 Meter Run High Performance", scheduled for a 8:35 PM MT start.

Hadn't noticed one other aspect to Ms. Boreman's great time and 2nd place finish- per the below, it's a new American Junior record.

Boreman and Jones aren't near their ceiling yet. The future of CU woman's distance and steeple looks bright.

Some nice results at the Portland Track Festival last night (See the bottom part of my post #98 for more detail on the meet)-
Sophomore Dani Jones lowered her PR (and NCAA season best) time of 4:10.74 from the NCAA Championships prelims by over 2 seconds, and met the U.S. Trials standard of 4:09.5 (per http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Outdoor-Championships/Qualifying-Standards.aspx) in running 4:08.42 . Sara Sutherland, now a pro sponsored by Saucony, finished right behind Ms. Jones, also making the standard with her 4:08.93 finish. Another #ForeverBuff, Maddie Alm, must still be training pretty dang hard, as she came within a few seconds of her college PR in running 4:17.30 in section 2.
Note- Ms. Jones, whose NCAA Championship prelim time already moved her up to #3 on CU's all-time list, is now within a couple seconds of #2 Emma Coburn's 4:06.87. (#1 may be tough for her to get as a collegian, as Jenny Simpson's ridiculous 3:59.90 is also the NCAA record.)

Redshirt Junior Ben Saarel also earned his 1500M season best in running 3:39.05, which just misses the U.S. 3:39.00 auto-qualifying standard. Assuming he doesn't plan on finding another race to try to qualify in by 6/18 (the qualifying deadline), hopefully he may get invited to the U.S. Championships anyways as having one of if not the top non-qualifying times***. (He already holds the CU record after running 3:38.40 during his redshirt year in 2016.)
(***In addition to times, the USATF also has goal field sizes for their Championships, so I believe it's common for them to accept athletes to run who don't meet the standards. For example, they set a goal of 30 runners (for 2 1st round heats) in the 1500M. Note that I seem to remember some controversy in Letsrun forum threads in the past from inconsistencies as to when USATF actually tries to meet those stated goals numbers, and when they don't.)

Recent graduate and Pac 12 Champ Nick Harris ran 1:48.86 in the 800M, just off his prior season- best time (1:48.77). (U.S. auto-qualifying time is 1:47.50.)

And, looks like #ForeverBuff Aric Van Halen maybe (???) had his best race of the year, winning his section (#2) of the 3000M steeplechase in 8:49.02. (U.S. auto-qualifying time is 8:40.0.)

Note- qualifying times, Championships field sizes, and racing deadline noted above are from http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Outdoor-Championships/Qualifying-Standards.aspx .
