Buffs Set to Compete At USATF Championships

9 laps remaining and Dathan is now in 5th. Everybody is still bunched together, so he's got a chance.

He now leads a group of 6 that are pulling away with 5 laps remaining.

He ends up finishing in 2nd by 2 seconds behind Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp, a very impressive showing by Dathan.

Today's events

3:10 p.m. Steeplechase (First Round) Billy Nelson/Aric Van Halen
5:30 p.m. Discus Throw (Finals) Casey Malone

I missed heat 1 of the men's steeplechase, but former Buff athlete and current Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Billy Nelson finished 2nd. Aric Van Halen is competing in heat 2 right now.

I couldn't get the video to work for heat 2 but Van Halen advanced by finishing in 5th place. One more event today for the Buffs.

5:30 p.m. Discus Throw (Finals) Casey Malone

Former Buff Casey Malone is currently in 1st place of the Discus finals after 3 of 6 attempts. He is currently an assistant coach with the Buffs and was the 1998 NCAA Discus Champion and a 2 time Olympian.

He's now in 3rd place with a few throwers left in round 3. There's 17 people competing and the top 8 advance to the finals after the 3rd round.

He fouls round 5 and has one shot left. He has to throw more than 4ft 5in to win, assuming nobody does better than the top score right now.

The first three at the NCAA meet finished with better times than the winner of the national championship!

It was a little hotter in Iowa than Oregon.

For some perspective, the world record in woman's 3000 steeple is sub 9:00.

Jenny Simpson just won the 5000 meter. So she is qualified in both 1500 and 5000 for Moscow.

Jeremy Dodson did not qualify for the finals in the 200m finishing in 13th place and Laura Thweatt finished in 14th in the 5000m.
