Clayton to wear Wizzer White‘s #24, Salaam‘s number retired for 19 years

I don’t necessarily have an issue with letting Clayton wear #24, but going forward, I think it needs to be something that is earned.
Not sure how that would work. Once a player starts playing beneath a number they normally keep it.

I am in the camp - that does not believe in retiring #'s.

If they didn't retire Dale Earnhardt's 3 in Nascar then no # should be retired in any sport.

PS - This was handled great by the Administration and I like the move of un-retiring these #'s.
Was Earnhardt part of the Warren court?

I agree that the AD and Admin handled this well. The one issue I have is that I don't think anyone should wear Rashaan's number at CU, ever. He did so many great things here, that I could see them retiring his number under normal circumstances. But given the struggles that this programs former players have had with mental health issues, and the awareness they are bringing to it in trying to help current and former players (all great things), I think Rashaan and his story should remain encapsulated for the rest of time. I'm just not a fan of retiring numbers at all.

Put a banner up in the stadium. Add a patch to the jersey for that number. Build a statue in some cases. But to say no one will ever wear a jersey number for your team ever again is short-sighted. With over 100 people on a college football team and already having issues on special teams since guys on offense and defense share the same number, it's just making a difficult situation worse. Throw in that you've got recruits that start branding themselves in middle school with a particular number and you're at risk of losing a recruit if he can never wear that number at your school.

Retiring numbers is one of those "feel good" things that seem like a good idea at the time but then end up not doing anything but hindering your program going forward.

You said that before, and generally I agree with you. I just see this one as a special case. Rashaan remains a beacon to remind everyone involved with the AD to pay attention to what's happening with the overall well being of the current and former student athletes at CU. That's something I am willing to "sacrifice" the use of one number over.

You don’t think your goals can be accomplished without retiring jersey #19 permanently?

Ashaad has a big robe to fill.
He’ll be judged by his play on the field.
his nickname in high school was the hammer. He obviously passed the bar to be called the gavel.
He's been through many trials and tribulations to get this far in his football career.
And is often in motion.
The jury is still, out until he proves himself at the P5 level.
I think this is definitely appealing to HS players
I dont depose you have some video evidence to present to us?
He’s a supreme talent. He’ll be awesome!

So well done!!! Allbuffs is so great!

Big question, where and when can we buy this new jersey :)
In 2021 you will probably be able to buy it with “Clayton” on the back and a portion will go to him. Which is how it should have always been.

as we haven't been any good for any sustained period of time in about 20 years, i am all for unretiring any numbers. we (especially me and other die-hards) spend far too much time reminiscing about better days in the past. and, i think we still suffer to an extent from the belief that since our Buffs were great before that they automatically could be great again some day.

the program needs a complete reset of mentality. honor the past, acknowledge the greatness that was, but what are we doing, right now, right here, today, to get better? because we are at not relevant any more. we are a constant bottom feeder in a conference of soft teams.

we need a higher standard for the program in recruiting, in coaching, in support, everything.

there can be no sacred cows when you are looking up at some of the historically dog **** teams we are looking up to now.

Byron White wasn't just a great football player, he was one of the greatest and most accomplished people to attend CU. His number needs to be retired forever.

ok, fine. maybe he's the one exception. i don't really care about 1 guy. and his overall amazingness maybe warrants a special one-off exception.

but, i will pose this question-- what brings more attention to the greatness of white to modern players and recruits and fans: (a) a retired number mentioned on the wall at folsom or (b) a patch honoring him on his jersey number on a current player?

no sacred cows when you suck for 2 decades and don't appear to be punching your way out of the box one put oneself in.

Message received. I am hereby un-retiring my Members Only jacket from 1984. Doing whatever it takes to get better today.

Agree. That's why Michigan re-retired Gerald Ford's number 48 after it was un-retired for a bit.
