Coach MM conference call with fans - 12pm March 13th

My phone rang at 2 minutes to 12 and it was "THE VOICE OF THE COLORADO BUFFALOES, MARK JOHNSON!" (enough with the all caps) inviting me to join a live fan Q&A session.

2 of the first 3 questions were about replacing Lindsey and what to do with the lack of production at TE. In both cases he gave very vanilla answers, just listing off the depth chart without any color to speak of, so I stopped paying attention and finally hung up a few minutes ago.

Did anyone listen to the full thing and were there any real insights gained?

Watching MikMac interact with the media, which clearly annoys him, in my mind, would indicate he wants to participate in a fan conference call about as much as he wants to have high tea with Joe Tumpkin.

I can't imagine him doing anything but just giving rote answers and counting the minutes until it is over. I don't blame him, but that is how I see it.

Yeah, I stopped listening to his conferences a while ago. There's just nothing there.

On the other hand, I enjoyed what Chiv, Els and Roper had to say recently. Maybe MM could designate routine after practice media discussions to his key assistants. I wonder if Plati knows how painful MM is. He’s doing him a great disservice. He needs media training. It’s not hard.

Plati doesn’t know how bad Plati is with the media! There’s no way in hell that he’s a credible source for guidance on this matter.

He never answers any questions. Everyone is always "doing well"...things are going "well" this spring... The funny thing was the questions on open practices...he said he got screwed one time, didn't disclose who, but he said that he thinks much of a loss of a game was due to "leaking" information from practice. What a frigging joke...he did get mad yesterday about his son..."you know he is the leading returning receiver"... Sorry, MM. But if your son sits all season, it will not be noticed.

Damn. You really hate MM. you read so much in every word he says and doesn’t say. And read so much about his intentions and psyche.

MM is stuck in the 90's with his mentors still ringing in his head. This is 2018 and he needs to understand how stupid he sounds with the old grouchy Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick coach speak. I still feel that he has one, maybe two years to win or get out of here! I believe that Chiv has a chance to be ready to be the coach of this program in the case in 1 or 2 years when he is let go.

How does being great at post-practice media Q&A sessions directly help win football games, develop players, and recruit future players to the football team?

Those are his top job priorities. Giving away gleaming tips of insight might make us all happy to have something to talk about but why is that HCMM's responsibility?

Say what you will about his on-the-field coaching performance; but that is like saying you want your CEO to be really good about outlining the strategic direction of the company to the press before he has figured out how to actually execute it with sustainable successful.

Would I rather have a great coach who was a great orator, sure. But I'd rather have a great coach who sucked as an orator, than the other way around. And until he is a great coach then he should not waste his energy on anything else but his coaching.

I think the well reasoned folks on this board agree that Mac is at a pivotal point in his tenure here but are pulling for him to succeed.

Agreed. But 4Bienemy saying Chiv has a chance to be the head coach of this program in 1 or 2 years? :ROFLMAO: C'mon be realistic, you think if MM is fired, you're going to take someone on his staff and promote him to HC? No, Rick George is going to go out and find his pick. Might ask them to keep Chiv on, but you're a bit delusional if you think Chiv has any chance of being HC here in the next 1/2 years. This is his first season calling plays, let's see how that goes before we start looking to give him the reins lol

This here is exactly right. He doesn’t have to be good with the press period.

EIther you WIN big...or you excite the fan base with a recognition that the success of the team is very much influenced by the fans and those that show up and spend $$$ on the team. MM has had one winning season in five. His team took a major step backwards last year. I do think this year will be much better given the projected two-deep, but the rest of the league is not remaining stagnant. MM just comes across as a bit angry and irritated with any kind of criticism. During the conference, the host was imploring the participants to renew their season tickets. Nary a word about that from the head coach. You would think that he would say something to the effect that "We are hungry. We are, I believe, more talented. We will be better next year and we want you to be part of that as our fan base is very important to our success".....He simply cannot do that. So for those that say they would prefer a winning coach versus a coach that is great with the media (read Ricky)....I would agree. Unfortunately, MM is neither right now. And given the poor performance on the field last year, he should be a bit more enthusiastic and excited about the coming year and telling the fan base to expect a great year.

4beineimyTD's hit the nail on the head. MikMac is a Parcells disciple. That makes him a very good X and O guy, but Bill was very grumpy. But, he could afford to be...he won.

The "I have forgotten more than you peons know" attitude wears thin on a HC with a sub .500 record.

Every personality type and presentation style wears thin if you're losing. ;)

Words and how you say them reflect leadership. He does not use inspiring leader language to enroll participation. He’s not a good leader nor the long-term solution at CU.

You seem to be assuming that him talking to the media is the same as him talking to his staff and players.

Oh gee, you really disqualified yourself a long, long time ago to have a believable opinion on this subject.
