How do you feel about UF getting rid of the Gator Bait chant?
I don’t know what to think about it. I have never thought about that meaning in my life when I have heard it or chanted at games but I guess some people do. I don’t think that chant is really going Away though, have fun trying to get people to stop yelling it at games.

Well, it's the school that is prohibiting the band from doing it.

I don't know, the player who kind of founded it came out and said they shouldn't ban it, and the school even said there are not racist connotations with the chant in the context of a football game, but some students complained.

The bolded isn't much of an argument, but while I guess it has racist connotations, I imagine everyone who's ever lived near swamp land has been called or warned of being gator bait. You kind of wonder where it's going to end. Maybe the Southeastern Conference changes to 'eastern Conference, or 'EC, Mississippi Rebels -> Mississippi Jezebels, and while we're at it, the White House -> Nondescript Color House.

Great slippery-slope. Well done.

I mean, it seems ridiculous, until it doesn't. And at this point does changing the mascot of Ole Miss really sound far fetched after hearing the UO/OSU rivalry name was changed from Civil War?
As I’ve posted here before, racist imagery is woven into the fabric of American language and our cultural sensibilities. Things feel okay because they’re persistent, not because they’re good. In your world, I guess a treasonous and racist soldier ought to be an acceptable mascot for a state with a lot of black people? Oregon has its own deep racist history. Sometimes, removing or changing a symbol only helps on the surface. In other situations, changing a saying or a mascot has the effect of making people feel more included. It’s up to each state and academic institution to determine what they’re willing to do in order to address those issues.

I think they should rename the avengers movie, because the US is clearly the only country that has had a civil war.

True, other countries have had Civil wars, but last I checked Oregon is in the US and the US Civil War was all about slavery. Makes sense they'd want to distance themselves from that. It's ok to re-evaluate things to determine appropriateness.

This is ****ing nonsense.

Can’t wait for the petitions to start for Guns N Roses to change the name of their song.

I agree with your point as it pertains to the confederate flag, statues and even mascot of Ole Miss because that is symbolic for slavery. Why are we cancelling “Civil War” though, just because it was fought over slavery? It should be celebrated because of that.

In the case of the Oregon “Civil War,” which team is supposed to the the Union and which is supposed to be the Confederacy?

Why does it have to be taken literally? In that context, why can’t a civil war just mean a battle between different sides in the same territory?
Again, the State of Oregon has a significant history of racism. There are parts of the state where white supremacist groups fly confederate flags. They’ve decided to rename the game. I don’t understand why that offends you.

Can you tell me why the term “Civil War” offends you?

Oh FFS, do you think they named the civil war rivalry because of slavery? Look up the definition on civil war, they actually teach it as the first definition when you start reading that chapter in history books in elementary school. They are a state split between two schools, why make a bigger deal about this than it really is? This is called overthinking **** that doesn’t matter.

You’re not reading what I wrote.

It’s not about me. It’s not whether or not I am offended. University representatives in Oregon decided to make a change to how their rivalry football game is named. The new name doesn’t offend me. Whether I’ll bet the game or not isn’t affected by the name.

You’re defending the decision to remove that name because you say the state has a racist history. I’m wondering what’s racist about using the term “Civil War”? Please answer my question.

I don’t have to answer your question when you don’t answer mine. Why are you offended by them changing the name?

The University leaders decided that this is how they’ll symbolically address the state’s racist history. I am okay with that. I don’t have to tell you why the name itself is racist when that’s not the point.

I’m not offended at all. I just believe it to be another example of this major overreaction culture we are living that causes even more unintended and unnecessary divisiveness because of the cries of the vocal minority. To my knowledge, we haven’t heard any outrage over the name of that rivalry game by any of the black players or coaches over the years, so why are white University leaders making this completely trivial change?

It’s similar to the complete feel good rule the SEC instituted making about no NATIONAL championships being held in MS until the flag is changed. I believe they should change the flag, but how many NC games in any sport are held in that state anyways? If Sankey wanted to enact actual change, he would institute something that actually has teeth.

All these changes are just white people trying to show that they are doing something for the cause during these times, even though nobody is actually asking for them.

You definitely haven’t followed the Oregon story because the person who led the name change charge is Dennis Dixon. He’s been working on this for years. Steven Jackson and Ken Simonton also supported Dixon’s cause.

The SEC leadership will have to address their bind since a good chunk of their fanbases are unequivocally racist. There are other leaders who are working with marginalized communities to try and move forward. I wish I had the tweet handy that originally stated this, but essentially it said that “virtue signaling” is a sad concept because white people have been bad for so long that even when they attempt something good, other white people won’t believe that they’re acting with good intentions.

My $.02 which may not be worth much to many, I align with what Pate said, it is about righting past wrongs. Civil war doesn’t mean much to me as a white dude from the north, but it means a lot to white dudes from the south. There is a lot of symbology within it and if people don’t want to see it anymore in reference to a game that is probably played by at least 50% black people, I am good with that. I am sure in Serbia nobody wants to see a game called a civil war except probably those that carried out the genocide.

Not offended but will be the number one person using the word woke on the board and the person who posts about it the most.
