For our UConn fans, here's a player breakdown of the 9 CU guys you can expect to see:
Josh Scott (Sr): very fundamentally strong big man who hustles more than most stars you see these days. Throwback who won't overwhelm with raw athleticism, but through great timing & technique blocks a good number of shots and gets up the court on the break. Has sometimes been able to extend the defense against opposing centers who don't like getting pulled out of the paint. Good passer out of the post.
Wesley Gordon (Jr): somewhat the opposite of Scott. Long and athletic PF with quick ups who doesn't have the best footwork or fundamentals. Is most dangerous as a rebounder and rim protector/ help defender who gets a lot of his points on putbacks. Can surprise with the occasional long jump shot. Surprising athleticism has allowed him to actually cover opposing guards at times and CU will sometimes switch 1-5 or at least 1-4 with Wes on the court. Also a pretty good passer.
George King (So): scorer with a clutch gene. Great 3pt shooter and decent finisher. Struggles in the mid-range and turns the ball over a lot for a wing. Often a plus rebounder. Not a good team defender but does engage well when assigned a difficult cover.
Josh Fortune (Jr): 2 guard who pretty much defines streak shooter. Could go 1/7 from 3pt range. Could bury a team by going 5/6 from deep. Also streaky on turnovers (sometimes forces things into no man's land) and his defense can be erratic. Long for a 2, though, and is a plus rebounder from the position. Was a starter at Providence before transferring to CU and sitting out last season per NCAA regs.
Tre'shaun Fletcher (Jr): very long wing who is the glue guy in the rotation as a wing. Decent handle. Decent finisher. Pretty good 3pt shot. When he's playing angry, he can be a load and make a lot of plays. Unfortunately, he tends to get in foul trouble when playing that way so that's caused a lot of variability in his aggressiveness. Especially on offense, he can be too passive.
Dominique Collier (So): here's the big enigma for CU at the point. He has had nights when he is dealing, playing great team defense without fouling, and knocking down a bunch of 3pt shots. He has had nights when he's not making the right pass, turning the ball over, not looking for his offense, and getting beat off the bounce while picking up quick fouls by reaching. Within a single game we can see stretches of each. If an opponent gets in his head or gets some early fouls on him, he can disappear. Pretty slick handle. Not super fast or a quick-twitch PG.
Xavier Talton (Sr): pretty much what you want from a rotation senior guard. Makes 90+% of his free throws and plays within the system on both ends. Willingly takes charges and is effective on offense when he lets things come to him instead of trying to force action.
Tory Miller (So): big, scary dude who plays with a lot of emotion. Defensive footwork is an issue. On offense, has a surprisingly soft touch for a guy as big bodied as he is. Very much a banger on the interior, but who can extend a bit into the mid-range for a baseline jumper. Maturing, though, and can let his emotions get away from him (actually bit a player from Air Force this year in a loose ball tie-up).
Thomas Akyazilli (Fr): freshman PG from Belgium who plays with toughness. Quick hands - gets more steals, strips and blocks than you'd expect. Been in a long shooting slump but did hit a late 3 in the last game so maybe coming out of it. Good handle. Aggressive. Makes some freshman mistakes. Also makes plays.
(On the bench and ineligible to play is a lot of firepower that is expected to return next season. Xavier Johnson is a big wing/ college 4 who can guard 2-4, hit 3s, finish at rim, rebound and emotionally lead. Tore Achilles last summer or would have been senior & 2nd leading scorer behind Josh Scott this season. Derrick White, a DII All-American who transferred to CU and has to sit out this season. Practice reports are that he can do it all on the offensive end as a 6'5" guard and is probably CU's most complete weapon -- scores in a variety of ways, dishes, rebounds. Assumption is that CU will have to adjust to not having things running through Josh Scott next year, but the talent level and firepower may be the highest it's ever been at Colorado.)
