With the team's 1st Big 12 Championships in over a decade only a couple days away, thought I'd set this thread up now so we can provide links, previews and results for the upcoming post-regular season for the generally young men's and women's cross country teams.

As noted in the title, the post-season schedule is:

Big 12 Championships - Friday, November 1st (Hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas),

NCAA (Mountain) regional - Friday, November 15th (In Reno, Nevada), and

NCAA Championships - Saturday, November 23rd (In Madison, Wisconsin)

With new Coach Carlson having to re-load the rosters for both the men and women, this is one of in not THE 1st rebuilding years I can ever remember the XC teams having:
  • The men did get solid results in their 1st major race (Nuttycombe Invite in Madison) so that, at least per one random (Kolas***) point calculator I found ( https://kolascalc.com/), they MIGHT qualify for the NCAA Championships IF they perform as they're rated at the Conference and NCAA Regional Championships. However, I'd assume they'd be one of the last teams in, so it could go either way.
  • With only one serious team race, and that at a somewhat secondary level, the women's team would need GREAT races at the Conference and Regional races to even get in the conversation for being one of the 31 teams who qualify for the NCAA Championships. (It would be a MAJOR upset for them to qualify, but then I also could see where if some of their runners who have had injury issues some how got back to prime condition soon, they could surprise at least some teams.)
  • As described below, even if the team(s) doesn't/ don't qualify, there are also opportunities for individuals to qualify for the Championships.
***Copying from what I wrote in a thread from last year re how teams and individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships -
"
  • 9 regional races will determine which 31 teams for each gender get selected for the Championships.
    • The top 2 finishing teams in each of the regions are the 18 auto-qualifiers.
    • The remaining 13 teams are "At-large" selections. Unlike the team sport selection process most of us are familiar with (with their selection committees), the at-large teams in cross country are selected almost totally on a mathematical calculation based on how many wins the next highest regional finishers have accumulated over the 18 auto-qualifiers, and any other teams that have earned at-large berths earlier in the process (with a few exceptions). (The wins over other all ready selected teams are called "Kolas points".)
    • The at-large calculation has quite a few rules. For those interested, here's what looks to me like a couple decent descriptions of the process and rules - https://www.thestridereport.com/understanding-kolas . (The link to the left was the most succinct and isolated explanation I could find. The full explanation can also be found starting on page #14 at https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ch...crosscountry/2023-24D1XCC_PreChampsManual.pdf .)
"
In addition to teams qualifying for the Championships at regionals, "The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships.: (This is copied from https://www.ncaa.com/news/cross-cou...viduals will be,auto-bid to the championships.)

More on Friday's Conference Championships:

From the Baylor link below, looks like the women's 6K race is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM MT (10:00 AM Baylor time), and the men's 8K race 1 hour later (10:00 AM MT (11:00 AM Baylor time).

I don't see a lot of other detailed information right now, but a few initial links:

Host Baylor's cross country homepage - https://baylorbears.com/sports/cross-country

Link to live video stream (As has been the case for the Olympic team sports this season, looks like a live stream will be available via ESPN+ for those who have a premium subscription for that service.) - https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/076da636-e607-4502-a27e-fd04f47f6eb4

Not any info on there right now, but link that will have things like live results, team rosters for the races, etc.) - https://live.deltatiming.com/meets/41448

And, just as I posted the above, looks like team rosters WERE recently posted.
(Normally, I'd say only 7 for each gender would be actually racing on Friday. However, Looking at last year's Conference results, looks like the Big 12 may do similar to what the Pac 12 did in allowing a few more (maybe 10 max?) runners per team per gender as compared to the classic 7 racer limit in all the other NCAA races. Just quickly looking at last season's results I see BYU had 10 male runners. Do want to also note that, even with the additional runners, it was still only be the top 5 finishers whose scores get included in an individual team's point totals, and only the top 7 finishers scores for each team are counted in the overall scoring for the team results..) -

Women:
145 Katja Bauerle
146 Natalie Cook
147 Emma Hadley
148 Louise Lounes
149 Caroline Mehlhorn
150 Abbey Nechanicky
151 Elliot Pribramsky
152 Jessie Secor

Buffs Show Out at Big 12 Championships in Waco

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

WACO, Tex. —
The Colorado Buffaloes cross country teams competed in the Big 12 Championships Friday morning at Baylor University on the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

All 16 schools participated in the 6k event for the women, while 13 schools ran an 8k course for their men's teams. Each race fielded 100 runners.

The Buffs placed 6th (165 points) on the women's side, followed up with a 5th place finish (122 points) for the men. Sophomore standouts, Abbey Nechanicky and Dean Casey, headlined as the top finishers for CU.

WOMEN'S 6K
Nechanicky claimed her second consecutive top finish for the Buffaloes with a time of 20:06.12, good enough for 17th overall. She placed inside the top-15 in her last 6k event at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, with a personal best of 19:42.4.

In her first 6k event as a Buff, Jessie Secor finished second for the women's side, shortly after Nechanicky. Secor ran a time of 20:34.4, finishing 31st. Katie Bauerle captured another top-3 placement for her squad, ending in the no. 32 spot with a time of 20:36.5.

Natalie Cook (46th - 21:04.1) and Caroline Mehlhorn (53rd - 21:12.5) rounded out the top five scorers for Colorado.

"I thought the women had a solid day," head coach Sean Carlson said. "I think we probably had another 10 points in us to get up another spot, but hopefully we can feel a little bit better in two weeks at regionals."

MEN'S 8K
Casey secured a 16th place finish, posting a personal record 22:52.8, crushing his previous best time of 23:15.0 he posted for Tennessee last year.

The Buffaloes next seven runners all posted personal record times for the 8k event. Simon Kelati (26th - 23:17.4), Isaiah Givens (27th - 23:20.0), James Overberg (29th - 23:22.3) Wilson Georges (31st - 23:24.8) Grady Rauba (33rd - 23:28.9) Lukas Haug (39th - 23:37.2) and Ethan Edgeworth (40th - 23:45.3).

"Our men probably had our best race so far this year," Carlson stated. "We did a really good job packing it up. Those front 20 guys are some of the best guys in the country right now, and we are trying to inch closer to getting back to the national meet and then back to national relevance."

The Buffs will be back in action in two weeks, where they will compete in the NCAA Reginonals in Reno, Nevada on November 15.

I assume cubuffs will post something as soon as I hit the "post reply" button for this, but did want to provide some links for tomorrow's NCAA Mountain Regional, scheduled for tomorrow and hosted by the Univ. of Nevada - Reno. Looks like the women's race is scheduled to start at noon MT, with the men toeing the line at 1:00 PM MT.

For the 1st time in decades, I believe it will be an upset for either Buff team (women or men) to earn a team berth to the Championships final, although I think the men's team has at least an outside shot with a great day. Did want to note once again that, for any teams that don't qualify, the top 4 individual finishers whose teams don't qualify also get to go to the Championships and race.

For those interested, assume running oriented websites like thestridereport.com, flotrack.org, etc. will be providing updates as the NCAA Championship selection picture clears up as each regional is run and Kolas pointed finalized. (Although I believe both of those websites mainly have premium content, they, along with some other sites, I believe usually do tweet out how things are looking.) Believe it's more one individual's project, so don't know if they'll be able to or be trying to update things quickly as races end, or even how accurate it might be, but I also found this calculator some one has trying to calculate the Kolas situation - https://kolascalc.com/ .

A solid run for the rebuilding women's team, who better thier #8 ranking in the NCAA's last Mountain regional rankings and finish 6th. (The teams they beat today that were ahead of them in the rankings were CSU and Texas Tech.) Especially, great run for sophomore Jessie Secor, who was the big mover late, moving up 11 spots from the last (4.7Km) time interval to finish 11th and punch a ticket to the Championships as the #3 finisher for runners who aren't on teams that will be making NCAA's. She almost has CU company at the Championships, but sophomore Abbey Nechanicky's 16th place finish looks to be JUST outside the final individual qualifying position. (She was the 5th finisher of those who don't look to be on qualifying teams, and only the top 4 go to NCAA's.)

Buffs Wrap up NCAA Mountain Regional in Reno

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

RENO, Nev. --
The Colorado Buffaloes cross country teams competed in the NCAA Mountain Regional Friday afternoon in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Regionals next weekend in Wisconsin.

The women's team completed the 6k event with a total of 169 points, good enough for a 6th place finish among 19 schools. The men's team placed 5th overall in the 10k race with 157 points out of 17 schools competing.

Jessie Secor (11th - 20:10.2) and Abbey Nechanicky (16th - 20:13.7) were the top two finishers for the Buffs, both placing inside the top-20 for the event. Katja Bauerle rounded out the top three for the CU women's team, finishing 40th overall with a time of 20:46.9.

Natalie Cook (46th - 20:53.2), Caroline Mehlhorn (56th - 21:06.1), Louise Lounes (72nd - 21:28.8), and Elliot Pribramsky (77th - 21:34.2) closed out the rest of the scoring on the day in the women's 6k event for Colorado.

"The women have continued to trend the right direction each week," head coach Sean Carlson said. "Jessie and Abbey had great days. Jessie will make the national meet as an individual and Abby just missed after a great freshman season, looking forward to our athletes keeping the momentum going in to NCAAs!"

Isaiah Givens led the charge for the men's squad in the 10k event, placing 17th overall with a personal best time of 29:41.1, breaking his previous event record of 30:04.5. James Overberg (27th - 29:54.3) and Simon Kelati (33rd - 29:59.6) were the next two finishers for the Buffaloes.

Dean Casey (38th - 30:03.3), Wilson Georges (42nd - 30:16.8), Grady Rauba (44th - 30:17.3), and Kole Mathison (72nd - 31:07.2) were the final four runners to complete the 10k race for the Buffs.

"The men ran a good team race and should get through to nationals as an at large with today's performance," Carlson stated.

Buffs Prepped for NCAA Championships in Madison

BOULDER —
The Colorado Buffaloes cross country team will participate in the 2024 Cross Country NCAA Championships Saturday morning in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Buffs will race in the 6k event on the women's side at 8:20 a.m. MT and the 10k event on the men's side at 9:10 a.m. MT on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.

Jessie Secor will be representing the women's team racing individually in the 6k race, while the men's team will run as a unit in the 10k, for their 32nd consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.

Secor placed 11th in the 6k event Reno last weekend during the NCAA Mountain Regionals with a time of 20:10.2, punching her ticket to Madison. The men's team placed 5th overall out of 17 schools at the NCAA Mountain Regionals with 157 total points. Isaiah Givens (17th - 29:41.1), James Overberg (27th - 29:54.3), and Simon Kelati (33rd - 29:59.6) led the charge for CU during the 10k race.

The men, who came into the Championships ranked #28 (https://www.ustfccca.org/2024/11/fe...ns-cross-country-national-coaches-poll-week-6 ) beat that ranking to finish 19th place in the race (and therefore in the NCAA overall). SOLID race for a generally YOUNG team. Along with whatever recruits Coach Carlson is able to add for strength, a lot of potential in this men's group already at CU, with the top 3 scorers, 4 of the 5 scorers and 6 of the 7 CU racers today being listed as sophomores.

Individually, big props to sophomore Dean Casey, who led the Buffs and earned All-American honors with his 30th place finish. (The top 40 finishers in each Championship race automatically are named All-American.)

On the women's side, the one Buff runner who qualified, (another sophomore), Jessie Secor, moved up at pretty much every interval from 2K (where she was 158th) on and finished 107th. (She finished 113th as a frosh last season while at Tennessee.)

Did want to mention that, as is usual for Championships in any sport, only team and individual championship contenders seemed to get any mention during the (national) broadcast, so I didn't notice the CURRENT Buffs being mentioned much, if at all.

However, CU did get mentioned a few times for a BIG past accomplishment, namely because the BYU Cougars (congrats to them) today became the 1st school since 2004 to win BOTH the men's and women's team championships, and It was the Buffs who won both in 2004.

(It was a good day overall at the top for the Big 12, as in addition to BYU's team sweep, West Virginia finished 2nd in the women's race and Iowa State was runner-up in the men's. It wasn't all roses for the 12 however, especially for the OK State men, who were the defending champions and I believe pre-race favorites or co-favorites with BYU. They "only" finished 8th.)
