Wouldn't be 100% shocked. He's done some good things for that school, he's also blown a lot of hot air and spent a lot of money the AD doesn't have. Things don't look good for meeting the October stadium deadline, if that fell through somehow, I could see him out on his ass in a heartbeat.
Meh, who cares.
He did as good a job as possible doing what he was hired to do, to try to get a stadium built and propel them into the big time.
Unfortunately he may have been hired for a job that couldn't be done and now he is taking the fall for it.
I wonder how much his stadium fundraising stepped on other toes while still not being successful.
CSU has always prided itself in getting along with the community, this effort has generated some vocal opponents, again without tangible results.
May not be fair but I can see the politics behind it.

And is badly badly missing the stadium fundraising goal, while spending huge amounts of cash that CSU doesn't have (which is why he was able to make good hires and grow).
If I remember back to when he was hired a few years ago, I vaguely remember that it was stated he was there to get the stadium built.... he hasn't done well with that.
My guess is financial mismangement and the failures with the stadium.... if this is actually happening at all.

Unless he just wants to move back to Colorado, I don't know why? Clearly a much worse job. I saw name loosely mentioned with Air Force (also has a connection there).
If it is true it will be funny to see how the core sheep fans try to spin this as a positive step towards being invited to join a major conference.
