CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

BOR meeting for Tuesday is now gone.
Maybe GK has pulled a rabbit out of his ass? Maybe the deal is so bad there's no need to discuss?

Let more speculation continue.

If the only factor was athletics media revenue, maybe. I believe CU's drivers which were given more weight were alumni/ donor connections, student recruitment (including Asia since international tuition rates are juicy), and increased academic prestige through association to play into those first couple points.

Too often, it seems, people look at this through the lens of these being minor league football franchises rather than them being a university's front porch of marketing for alumni, donor, student, community and potential student engagement. The presidents are the board and steering committees. They don't look at this the same way as the media and public.
The point of the tweet isn't "see how much better Big 12 payouts will be!"

The point of the tweet is: "CU will likely wait for reliable numbers from the PAC. Not doing so with the Big 12 cost them at least 67M last time."

That 67M is conservative and doesn't include the revenue CU would get from selling the tier 3 TV rights for football, hoops, and minor sports independently for the small inventory not covered by the league deal. Remaining 8 were rumored to get 3M each from ESPN+ but even at 1M you'd be looking at close to 80M.

Based on this it's unlikely we see a resolution quick because if Kliavkoff doesn't have a good deal yet he has EVERY incentive to kick the can down the road.

Your point on other considerations is valid. There's a dollar figure where that is too much to overcome with revenue and one where that's not enough to stand in the way of a move. We'll see where it shakes out once the deal happens.

I think that is a relevant point. If we think revenue will be directly correlated to the willingness of casual fans in the footprint to go out of their way and pay a bit extra for content vs being by market size & buying power of the average person in the market... a flip from being advertiser- driven revenue to subscription-driven revenue... then the Big 12 footprint with its passion for football is maybe better positioned for that future than the Pac-12 footprint. Numbers from that higher interest may outweigh the numbers from western market money & the number of people who aren't cost conscious and will just say "get every app so I don't miss anything".
To put this another way, WWE Smackdown drew great numbers. But it wasn't worth what you'd think to advertisers because of market demographics. The advertisers interested in buying spots were brands like Slim Jim which don't pay like luxury car companies. I'm not sure if this will be as relevant on a subscriber model.

Revenue is also quite clearly not correlated with winning

You missed the point of the tweet entirely.
No I didnt. Its just that we dont really care about the B12 because they ultimately do less for the school then the west coast does: We get a majority of our out of state students from California. Our giving numbers greatly increased after moving to the Pac because a lot of our alums live in the pacific rim states.

Kudos to the B12. It turns out we, along with 11 other schools, signed up for a bad business decision about TV at that time.

We only know what we know right now. These are not worthless brands. The p12 had numerous high ratings games last year. There are people that want to watch and will watch.

Iger, ESPN:

"Analyst estimates vary widely in terms of how much Disney could collect from a sale, ranging from $8 billion to $23 billion, depending on which networks were included in a potential deal and how the value of each broadcast and cable channel was calculated. In his comments, Iger emphasized that ESPN was not among the assets on the chopping block, though he said he would seek strategic partners to help move the sports network into a fully direct-to-consumer business in the near future".
That seems shockingly low to me considering Microsoft is paying $69 billion for Activision. Really clarifies how the TV business is falling off a cliff.

Bs! We did just fine even up to 10 yrs ago! They still gave $ to ol cu. Regardless of conference we will still get the majority of out of state students from Cali. (Big population) We always have and always will because cu loves those out of state students. More $. And if they really love their ol cu then they better pony up for a steaming service because that’s where it looks like it is headed. I for one will not join another one especially apple plus the add on.

Disney versus Microsoft is an apples to oranges comparison.

The video game market dwarfs the television market and a big chunk of that purchase price is for King Mobile Games which makes Candy Crush and is owned by Activision.

And does that amount include the money that is owed to Comcast?
It's the specific amounts mentioned in the blurb at the bottom.

I think at least part of Comcast was included in the most recent year.

It also doesn't include the Big 12 tier 3 revenue schools sell independently.

Given the lost revenue here, CU has every reason to wait this out and get hard numbers.

There's one more year left of this current media rights and assuming that the Comcast overpayments are not included, the total losses over a 13 year period could go over $80M. That reason alone is reason enough to change conferences and I agree CU needs to get hard numbers.

It’s all bs! The deal will be crap but cu will stay because they are followers not leaders. So the cali contingent of, little Jim, nik, and liver will be happy. Hooray!! Because so many of the alumni go on road trips! Bs. We get to be stuck on the west coast bs with no national marketing or exposure and late night games! and I’m supposed to shell out more $ to a streaming service that I refuse to do. Let’s see how much $ they really make. again, very few people outside of each teams footprint will sign up for this. No one in the south or Midwest give a rats a** about the pac. Our recruiting gets hammered.

When you play your games in those states annually the CU Foundation can set up events around games that the alums show up to because they are showing up for the games. This is where some millionaire that graduated 20 years ago and moved away starts to make reconnect with the university. This is how one of my dads friends at the Florida Foundation did it. She pulled in millions for them before retiring.

If it was primarily west coast donors who stepped up with the resources to hire Coach Prime (this did not happen within the AD operating budget), then CU is especially interested in finding a way to remain in the Pac-12.
