CU officially hires Mel Tucker as new Head Football Coach

That's fair. I admit to being scarred by that run in Chicago but it was not just Tucker. The Bears also had the worst head coach and worst GM in the past 40 years.
And one of the least talented teams out there. I wouldn’t read much into his stint with the Bears. We were an absolute disaster and everyone knew it.

Kinda surprised nobody else said anything yet...I’ll touch on it briefly. I never truly care about the ethnicity of the head coach, I generally just want the most qualified. To those who have touched on the topic of “culture shock” within the boundaries of Boulder, hopefully this helps to quell their fears. It sounds silly (and I mean all of this respectfully) I’m proud that the institution is going to give a young, strong African American the job. I don’t know if this will help with recruiting but I think it speaks volumes to see him as the leader. I like that it shows that hard work can get you anywhere in life and when he says it, it will truly mean for everyone. Sorry off topic. Don’t rant at me too much.

I was about to post something similar. Couple articles mention him as a father figure and mentor. It definitely can’t hurt having someone more relatable at the helm for kids transitioning into a different environment.

Agreed!

Thought the exact same.

We need a new OC. No way you make this hire and keep Chev calling bubble screens. No way RG didn’t see how terrible our offense was.
I love Chev as RC, but that’s about it. The WR play has not lived up to the talent the last couple years.
If Tucker keeps him on as WR/RC fine, but we need a new OC.

Can we stop pointing to the two years he spent as Chicago Bears’ DC as reason some people don’t believe Tucker is a splash/good/exciting hire? I know it’s just a few people here and on 247 using that, but that’s ridiculous.

I think you can make a compelling argument he probably shouldn't be a NFL DC, but we're in the P12 ... not the NFL. We need him to resonate with guys fresh out of High School, not millionaires in their early 20s.

Honest question: Tucker comes to Colorado as successful coordinator in a major SEC program. The Rams have followed the same strategy with their last two hires in Bobo & McElwain. What is it that makes Tucker a home run hire compared to those two guys?

“He comes across to a lot of the recruits, especially for a lot of the African American young men out there, as a father figure“

Throw that out there too. If you haven’t read the new 247 update, it’s a doozy. Tons of quotes from all kinds of people. This dude is universally loved by players and coaches alike. **** yeah. I think we killed it here.

Personally I liked that nobody touched on it. Like it didn’t matter and and we were all psyched to have the best possible coach available based on his background.
I’m not disagreeing with your take, but I was actually proud of the fact no one said anything...

I like it. Seems big time. Recruiting is way more important than coaching and looks like RG sees it that way too. Very much looking for boatloads of 4 & 5 star recruits to be signing up.

That's why they'll likely keep chiaverini too. Although as somebody posted earlier "a coach should learn from their failures", it doesn't appear that chiv will be afforded that opportunity because boy o boy did he fail.

I’m guessing those guys got the best they could based on who the Rams are. The difference is the pedigree and level of CU. Unlike the rams, we should be much higher than where we have been.

Hey, I can respect your opinion and don’t disagree. I’m usually the last person to do so but I started thinking about if the recruits would resonate better with him as a leader. I don’t think it’s disrespectful to touch on. I think it’s a beautiful, progressive sign and I’m all for equality.

Well, first things first, were not the MWC. Secondly, McElwain did so well that Florida paid millions to steal him away so that’s a really really bad comparison. I don’t think Bono can recruit the way McElwain did and he’s struggling being in that conference.

Georgia fan here. You guys just got a great coach. I hate to lose him but we all pretty much knew it was just a matter of time before he landed a head coaching job. He is going to be a great coach because he really has no weaknesses in my opinion. He is 1) a great recruiter, the best recruiter in the SEC perhaps; 2) an excellent X’s and O’s coach; 3) very good with player development and getting the most out of all his guys, whether they be 3 stars or 5 stars; 4) an awesome motivator who gets his team fired up, and you can tell they really want to play for him; and 5) a good person who won’t get involved in any scandals or off the field issues. Now obviously the main question is who he brings in as OC but I definitely would just trust his judgement here. I think there will be a lot of good offensive minds out there that will want to coach for him. And I believe his style will be to hire an OC he really believes in and then just let him do his thing without micromanaging or meddling in the offense too much. I think you guys are really going to be impressed with his recruiting; he has been largely responsible for us being in the top 3 in recruiting the last several years and closing the gap on Bama. I’ll be interested to see how highly rated of a class he can pull in for you next year. I’m excited for him and for you guys too!

Good luck later, dude.

The more I read, the more I like this hire. It may take him a couple years to turn the tide but he could be a 10 year HC.

Theres an awesome article about the process Smart uses to recruit. He used flow charts to describe his process during his interview which landed him the job at uga. Hopefully Tucker understands that process fully and lays out something similar. https://sports.yahoo.com/georgia-ne...ck-sabans-process-game-changer-050129185.html

Tucker has all the best college program backgrounds to adapt and make the CU football program modern and competitive. Steal all the best Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State stuff. The Rise is back on at a much higher level. DBU will continue, but no more nicknames and goofy uniforms. Put on your traditional uniform and smash the guy in front of you.

Sure this has already been speculated on, but who might he bring to coach the OL?
It has become painfully obvious how important the OL coach is.
RG needs to fine a way to pay for a top OC and top OL coach. Paired with Tucker the rest of the staff could be young recruiters. IMHO.

I also feel it really helps make kids more comfortable having a father figure like Coach Tucker in Boulder.
