CU officially hires Mel Tucker as new Head Football Coach

I am super impressed with HCMT so far and all indications are he will move us up from the plateau we were stuck on. HCMT’s relentless recruiting effort is a big big upgrade over coach MMac. His focus and disciplined drive are also a step up from the old staff. That said there is a lot of MMac bashing going on that is really short sighted. MMac is a Buff. He put in his heart and soul to improve this team without taking shortcuts. If MMac hadn’t taken on the CU coaching challenge 5-6 years ago HCMT likely would not even be here now. After the OSU debacle we definitely needed a change at the top, but don’t forget that MMac helped fill the cup boards the HCMT will use as a base to launch us from. MMac was good for CU. I bet HCMT is going to be better, but I really appreciate the job MMac and his staff did to set up Tucker.

People forget how abysmally dark things were when he arrived. He may not have been the guy to lead us to the promised land but he left the Buff franchise in better shape than he found it.

This goes to a conversation the other day about a head coach having to be a star if you want to build a big time program. They never promoted Mike MacIntyre like this to the public.

I think part of this is down to Tucker himself. And not necessarily because he wants to be in the spotlight himself, but because he realises how the game is played at the big schools and now their recruiting machines work.

Exactly. I don’t think Tucker is some self absorbed guy or anything, I think he knows that he has to become a brand almost as much as the program.

I believe the point was that the hire in 2013 was a good one. He was the right hire at the time.
The only thing that went wrong was him staying after 2016. It would have been rough on that 2017 class that is sort of foundation of the team right now but we probably could have attracted a good coach AND more big time assistants.

Fore sure. HCMT puts a lot more value on promotion and public presence than other coaches we've had here. Hawkins would have been on board with this sort of thing, but it would have been about self-promotion with him more than about the program.

True statement about Hawkins. HCMT sure seems to be wanting to be a long-term member of the whole Colorado community. That is a refreshing change from the previous HCMM attitude that seemed to always have one foot out the door.

Hey, he was told not to come here.

On recruiting, he said when they evaluate and a coach comes to him, the first question is who else is recruiting them. If it's San Jose State, it gives him pause and asks the coach, what's wrong with the kid or what don't we know?

He left it there......

I wanted ask him about Lichtenstein but nobody would have gotten the joke...

TUCKER 6-Month Check-in

I was on a long drive for work today and could not help but think how PROUD and how EXCITED I am that Mel Tucker is our coach!!! I know we all had a lot of fun with the speculation when the coaching search was happening, but as of this point about a half a year later, I am very happy that Coach Tucker is on our team and as mentioned, he feels like he wants to create something really special here and seems to have the confidence that it will happen. It is not going to happen in 1 year, but overall I love being a BUFFS FAN!!!
