CUBuffs.com: Buff Alpine & Nordic Teams Set For Racing (and early 2017/18 season ski results)

Buffs with a small lead over DU after 4 of 8 races completed at the New Mexico Invite- http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/2/3/skiing-buffs-in-lead-at-halfway-point-of-unm-invite.aspx

RED RIVER, N.M. and CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. — The Colorado ski program opened the first of the two-day New Mexico Invitational on Saturday and swept the slalom races to help launch the Buffaloes into a first-place team standing after four of eight events.

For the second of now three team meets this season, CU swept the top spot in both the men's and women's slalom races. Ola Johansen won his third race of the season, second in the slalom, while Tonje Trulsrud also notched a second slalom victory in 2018. The duo where both victorious in the slalom at the Montana State Invitational back on Jan. 8.

The Buffalo men's and women's alpine teams both came out on top of their respective leaderboards in the slalom races that were held at the Red River Ski Area.
...

NOTEWORTHY: With Trulsrud and Johansen both winning their respective slalom races, the second win in the event this year for the two of them, this marks the first time since 2002 that CU has had two or more individual slalom race winners on both the men's and women's side.

Now with three individual race victories on the women's side (the two slalom wins by Trulsrud and one slalom victory by Christensen), the women's alpine team has matched the highest number of individual alpine race victories in the last 11 years. In 2007, Colorado won four races, three that were slalom events, and the year before in 2006, the Buffs posted nine victories with seven of those at the skies of Lucie Zikova.

MEET TEAM STANDINGS (4 of 8 events):
1. Colorado 327; 2. Denver 322; 3. Utah 292.5; 4. New Mexico 274; 5. Montana State 257; 6. Alaska Anchorage 175.5; 7. Westminster College 78; 8. Wyoming 69; 9. Colorado Mountain College 24

Rokos gonna get a long-term deal this year (like Wetmore) that's pretty much going to be a "for life" deal.

After building the big lead noted in a tweet in my last post above, and Alpine having a great day yesterday, it was probably looking like an easy team win. However, as can always happen on the slopes, Alpine had kind of a tough day today (including the 2 leaders almost all year were in 1st (men's) and 5th (women's) place after their 1st runs both skied out in their 2nd runs) other than Nora Christensen getting a great win, but the Buffs hold on for the overall team win in New Mexico.

Congrats esp. to Ms. Christensen for another individual slalom victory, and the whole team for another season win!

RED RIVER, N.M. and CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. — On the backing of Sunday's 5K classic race victories from both the men's and women's Nordic teams, and an individual slalom race victory from junior Nora Christensen on the alpine side, the Colorado ski team went on to claim a 6½-point victory at the New Mexico/Drew Judycki Memorial/Jade Enterprises Invitational.

The women's Nordic team placed four finishers inside the top five of the standings of the 5K classic held at Crested Butte to give them a 19-point margin of victory in the race. It was a bit closer on the men's side, but with three Buffalo finishers in the top six, Colorado won the men's race by a four-point margin over Utah.

"In general it was a solid day and nice to bounce back and leave here on an upbeat note," head Nordic coach Bruce Cranmer said.

CU eyes RMISA regular season title this weekend
BOULDER — The Colorado ski team looks to close out the regular season RMISA title this weekend when the Buffaloes compete at the Denver Invitational Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The alpine races – giant slalom on Friday and slalom on Saturday – are being held at Loveland Ski Area while the Nordic races – a 5/10K classic on Saturday and 5/10K freestyle on Sunday – will run at Maloit Park Trails in Minturn, Colo.

Colorado, winners of two of the first three meets this winter, can close out its six RMISA regular season championship since 2006. The Buffs have earned 1,946 points through the first three meets of the season and enter the DU Invite with a 90-point lead over the second place Pioneers.

CU's last regular season title was in 2015, which is also the last year it won a NCAA Championship. The meet serves as the final competition before the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional that Colorado is hosting in Steamboat Spring, Feb. 23-25.

DILLON, Colo. — The University of Colorado alpine team opened up the Denver Invitational being held at Loveland Ski Area and stands in second place after the running of the men's and women's giant slalom races on Friday.

CU was led by juniors Ola Johansen, who finished second in the men's race, and Tonje Trulsrud, who placed third in the women's.

Colorado scored 149 points overall and trails day one leader Montana State by six points. Close behind the Buffs is New Mexico in third with 146 points and Utah in fourth with 131.

MEN'S GIANT SLALOM RACE: Behind three finishers in the top 10, Colorado finished second with 85 points in the men's race. Montana State won it by 11 points over the Buffs, as the Bobcats had the race winner in Addison Dvoracek, got a fourth-place finish from Jeffrey Bell and a seventh-place showing from Patrick Carry, the younger brother of former CU skier Roger Carry, who is now a digital marketing associate for the Buffs.
...

WOMEN'S GIANT SLALOM RACE: Trulsrud's third place finish pushes her streak up to three consecutive giant slalom races where she has hit the podium.

She was the only Buff inside the top 10 Friday. The Buffs finished fourth in the women's race, recording 64 points. Alaska Anchorage was third with 66, Utah was second with 73 and New Mexico won it with 81 points. The 17-point difference between first and fourth is the closest women's giant slalom race of the winter when looking at the top four.
...

NOTEWORTHY: Colorado entered the day with a 90-point lead in the RMSIA standings with this being the last meet of the regular season. Denver sat in second behind the Buffs, but the Pioneers stand in sixth place after day one of its Invitational. Thus, Colorado has expanded its lead to 136.5 points. The Buffaloes are looking to close out their sixth RMISA title since 2006, a figure that is the most in the conference.

UP NEXT: The alpine team will close out its portion of the Denver Invitational on Saturday with the men's and women's slalom races that begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's event at Loveland Ski Valley.

CU's Nordic teams join in on the action Saturday with the 5/10K classic races taking place at the Maloit Park Trails in Minturn, Colo.

Overall thoughts on the day
"Considering the fact that GS is not our strongest, it was very partial right now first day, so we'll see and fight tomorrow in slalom. That has been our stronger event."

MINTURN, Colo. — The Colorado men's and women's Nordic teams put a cap on the Denver Invitational by winning both 5/10K classic races on Sunday at Maloit Park Trails, giving CU the meet victory as well as the 2018 RMISA regular season title.

For Colorado, it has now won six RMISA regular season titles in the last 13 years, the most of any school. CU won the 2018 regular season championships with 2,423 points, a 130½-point margin of victory over second place Denver.

"Considering the fact that throughout the season we were never in full number and strength due to Olympic preparation and World Cups, all kind of outside competition, it is an accomplishment," head coach Richard Rokos said of the Buffs winning the regular season title. "It is good to see the depth in the team and especially on the women's Nordic side, they have a really, really strong team. That is all very encouraging for upcoming regionals and nationals."

Thanks to the strong Nordic performances, CU was able to win the DU Invite with 657 points, a 66½-point cushion over Denver who finished second.

Colorado won all four Nordic races at the DU Invite and was led by freshman Alvar Alev, who won the two on the men's side.
...

NOTEWORTHY: Colorado's 130½-point margin of victory in the RMISA regular season title is the third-largest margin since 2006. CU in 2013 had a 271½-point margin, again over DU, in its 2013 season when it won all four meets, the RMISA/NCAA West Regional and NCAA Championship. In 2009, CU won the regular season by 155 points over New Mexico.

UP NEXT: CU will host the 2018 RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional, Feb. 23-25 in Steamboat Springs, Colo. The Buffs are the defending West Region champions and have won 28 total regional titles since the sport went coed back in 1983.

More On Winning The DU Invite And RMISA Regular Season Title
"It was outstanding. Considering the fact that we had at least two major skiers on Nordic side not even present (Petra Hyncicova who is at the Olympics and Sondre Bollum who was sick) and David (Ketterer) recovering from his European experience, I think this is really good season, no question."

Congrats to Ms. Lervik! (Great sign of the Buff's depth to have 8 different Skiers of the Week, especially in an "individual" sport.)
