CUBuffs.com: Buffs Ready For NCAA Cross Country Championships (Saturday, 9:00 AM MT start)

Definitely sad for senior leader Erin Clark. Official results are now out, and looks like she was by far the final Buff finisher back in 105th.

Again, looks like there are 4 Buff All-Americans- congrats to sophomore Dani Jones, junior Kaitlyn Benner, sophomore Mackenzie Callwell and freshman Sage Hurta for the honors. (The other 2 Buff higher finishers, a freshman and sophomore, were at 42nd and 43rd, so were also very close to All-American status).

Results can be clicked on via a link at http://www.ncaa.com/2016-cross-country-championship .

Wow. I wonder what happened. That made a huge difference in the team results along with costing her the AA honor she earned over the rest of the season.

Buff men were only in 5th or 6th at the halfway point of their 10K race, but 4 of them were right at the back of the main pack, so will hopefully have lots of points to gain and runners to pass later in the race.

Not Buff related, but looks like another major upset may be happening, as 3 time NCAA cross country champion Cheserek from Oregon has been dropped by two other runners. About 3 minutes to go for the leaders.

Top Buff looks to have finished in around the late teens/ early 20's. May not be enough for a win, but looks like alot came in by the 30's and 40's, so maybe a chance at the podium for the reloading Buffs.

Interesting that both teams appeared to have peaked at the PAC 12 championships this year.

Congrats to both squads for hard fought races.

Per official results now up (again, available via link at http://www.ncaa.com/2016-cross-country-championship ), looks like the scores in my prior post are accurate. Buff men do get 3 All-Americans in senior Ben Saarel (21st), RS freshman Joe Klecker (28th) and sophomore John Dressel (33rd). Unlike the women, the men were considered less deep, and slightly lower finishes than needed by a couple of their perceived 4th and 5th runners (who finished with 59 and 99 points for team purposes) helped keep the Buffs off the podium, although I'm sure the top 3 may have hoped to have finished somewhat higher also.

Not the greatest of days in general for the Buffs, but still some nice individual performances. Thankfully, unlike other sports, these runners can rest up a little bit, and then within one academic year switch over and take out any frustration and disappointment they might be feeling out on the track.

Go Buffs!

Forgot to say congrats to NAU, who win their 1st national championship ever for, among I'm sure other things, their departing coach, and to conference-mate Stanford for 2nd.

By the way, perplexing also that Morley, who with Clark have pretty much always been in the top 4 for the Buffs, also isn't included in the CU tweet above. Maybe they both had bad days and/ or weren't 100% coming in?
Very strange

I'd lay the odds at over 50/50 there might be an illness or injury involved, but sometimes there also are just bad days in every sport.

(Probably one if not THE greatest Buff track star Jenny (Barringer) Simpson was the favorite to win the individual cross country championships in her 2009 senior year, but blew up and ended in 163rd place (http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/cubuffs.com/documents/2009/12/9/660792.pdf). She obviously showed her character, did the proverbial "dust herself off and start all over again" thing, and has won innumerable national titles, international races including a gold and silver at world championships, an international Diamond League crown, and of course the recent Olympic bronze. Hopefully it's lessons like that that Ms. Clark will take, along with of course and much more importantly the support of teammates and coaches, as she goes forward for a kick-ass track season or two (she's a redshirt junior in track).)
