BOULDER—The University of Colorado is set to compete at the 2016 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships, Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15, at Husky Track at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The championship will start at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday with the men’s hammer throw; the first track event will start at 1 p.m. with the trials of the women’s 4x100-meter relay. Sunday’s events begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw and the finals of the women’s 4x100 relay will kick off the track events at 1 p.m. The championships will conclude on Sunday with the men’s 4x400-meter relay at 5 p.m. and will be followed by an awards presentation at 5:30. All times listed are Pacific.

Live stats and a complete schedule for the championships can be found at pac-12.org. A three-hour show of the championships will be broadcast tape delayed on May 22 at 10 a.m. on Pac-12 Network.

Edit- Points for each each event are earned for the top 8 finishers as follows- 1st- 10 points, 2nd- 8, 3rd- 6, 4th- 5, 5th- 4, 6th- 3, 7th- 2, 8th- 1.

The (non-multi events part of) championships have begun, and a very decent start for the Buffs as senior Brady Rutt earns 5 points for the men's team with a 4th place finish in the very 1st event, the Men's Hammer Throw. With the 2 points earned in the decathlon last weekend, the Buff men are in 4th with 7 points VERY early in the meet.
Possible Correction(???)- Somehow, the live results have changed, and Mr. Rutt now shows with a 6th place finish, which is good for 3 points, so the Buffs might have 5 points right now rather than the 7 noted above.

Just for reference and comparison purposes as this year's championships develop, last year the CU men finished 7th out of 10 Pac men's teams competing with 68 points, while the women came in 8th out of 12 teams competing with 43 points. (Utah and Oregon State don't have men's track and field teams.) Those 7th & 8th place finishes were the best combined finish by the Buffs since joining the Pac, although the individual teams had finished a place or two higher in earlier years.

Oregon and USC came in 1-2 in both the men's and women's championships last year, with the Duck men on top 152-121, while their women just edged the Trojans 185-182.

CU continues to be Steeplechase U, with sophomore Erin Clark becoming back to back Pac 12 champion!

Per live results, Ms. Clark's 9:48.72, which I believe is her new PR by over 10 seconds, is also a Pac 12 Championship record.

Live results also show fellow Buff (also a sophomore) Val Constien (again with a PR) earning 5 points for the team with a strong 4th place finish.

And, in the men's side of the steeple, looks like the Buffs, although senior Connor Winter can't quite repeat as champion, also earn big points, as Mr. Winter finishes 2nd and his sophomore teammate Adam Peterman ends up in 3rd.

In some other results for today so far, looks like senior Kelsey English earned some points for the women in the high jump-

And, in qualifying races, quite a few Buffs have already qualified for tomorrow's final races in their events-

Believe the 10,000 meter runs are the main events left for the 1st day for which the Buffs could earn points. The women are probably on the track now.
 
Women get nice 3rd and 5th place finishes in the 10000M from sophomore Mackenzie Caldwell and junior Carrie Verdon, and are going to end the 1st day in 3rd place with 33 points. Last year, they were in 6th place at this point with only 19 points, so a nice improvement this year.


Men are on the track for their 10000M, which should be just about over, if it isn't already.
 
And the men earn 3 points in the 10000M with 7th and 8th place finishes from freshman John Dressel and senior Ammar Moussa. This will probably be a disappointment point-wise for the men, especially considering the Buffs earned 16 points last year in this race. Of course, it also shows the uniqueness of each track race, as Mr. Moussa actually ran faster this year (29:29.92) to earn 8th place than he did last year (29:34.28) when he won the race.

So, overall the Buff men only have 22 points this year and are in 6th place at the end of day 1 vs. 39 points and 3rd place last year at this point, so will probably need some great performances tomorrow to equal last year's 7th place finish.

Nice (scoring) 3rd and 7th place finishes for the Buffs in the men's 110M hurdles by, respectively, junior Jaron Thomas and freshman Isaiah Oliver.
 
The nice scoring for the men in areas not generally considered strengths continues, with a 5th place finish in the discus by senior Brady Rutt and 8th place in the 400M for freshman Duane McClurkin Jr., who is multi-tasking right now as his high jump competition has also just started.
 
Another nice result for a freshman Buff, this time in the 800M.

And, a junior helps out on the men's side.
 
Great finish by the women in the 5000M as Kaitlyn Benner and Erin Clark (with 1st and 2nd place finishes for the meet!) go 1-2!
(Note- this is the 2nd straight year Ms. Clark has won the Pac 12 steeple and then turned around the next day and earned 2nd place in the 5000M.)

And the men also have a great 5000M with 3 scorers.

Note- so, assuming the live results are accurate, the Buffs men will end up at minimum in 7th place, and have a chance at 6th if they beat Stanford (currently showing 1 point ahead) in the 4X400M relay, the final event of the championships. (Does look like Stanford has the better time this year, so passing them might be unlikely.)

On the women's side, looks like the Buffs are in 6th, and have a slight chance at 5th if they can beat UCLA by 4 points or more in the 4X400M. (The Buffs could also finish in 7th if Arizona has a GREAT race.)

And, looks like the women get a 6th place finish in the 4X400M finale, which will keep them in 6th overall with 66 points, just 1/2 point behind UCLA for 5th. Assuming it's accurate, this signifies a nice improvement from their 8th place and 43 point finish last year.
 
And, looks like the championships are over, and the men look to have ended up in 7th, as they don't earn any points in the 4X400M, while Stanford wins. The Buffs unofficially end up with 63 points, or 5 less than last year when they ended up 6th.

Overall, the women's 6th place and men's 7th place finishes represent the best combined finish since the Buffs joined the Pac 12, and definitely show a nice improvement, especially when comparing to just 2 years ago, when both teams ended up in disappointing 10th places.

CONGRATS to the teams and coaches for the results!
