CU's Rightful Place in College Football

It's been one hell of a difficult decade for Buffs. Starting with a "scandal" that CU mismanaged into an excoriation in the media despite being based on unsupported allegations without factual findings in support... and driven by an administration that wasn't focused on athletic success, a successful head coach handcuffed with self-imposed draconian recruiting restrictions, then 2 consecutive bad coaching hires.

But as bad as it has been... as pissed off and frustrated that we fans are... and as hard as it is to believe after all this:

IT IS TIME FOR CU FANS TO START ACTING LIKE CU FANS AGAIN

We need to get our swagger back.

We need to re-ignite that special brand of Buff arrogance that makes us unique.

Instead of turning it on each other and our own program, we need to direct our snark and belittling toward other programs.

As it should be.

Let's remember:

National Championship
Heisman Trophy Winner
9 other national player awards (Thorpe (2), Mackey, Butkus (2), Walker, Draddy, Guy, Camp)
1 Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award
30 Consensus All-Americans (among all-time NCAA leaders)
26 Conference Titles
6 Members of College Football Hall of Fame
Only program to beat Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska in same season (and done it multiple times)

Even after this dark decade, CU still ranks:

#24 All-Time in Wins
#29 All-Time in Win %
#21 All-Time in NFL Draft Picks

For game day atmosphere, CU has:

Ralphie - the best live mascot in all of sports
Chip - a multiple national champion mascot
Folsom Field - the most beautiful setting in the nation for college football
Boulder - the nation's #1 town (pick your measure, it probably has ranked #1 in it)

And where are we now as we look into the future?

Head Coach Mike MacIntyre - who, in 3 years, just took San Jose State from probation & being so bad they were wondering whether to discontinue football... to a Top 25 season. Now entering Year 2 at CU.

Facilities - Opening for the 2015 season, CU is investing in an unprecedented facilities improvement that will bring CU into the upper echelon of facilities in all of college football

Young talent at key positions - highlighted by sophomore QB Sefo Liufau and sophomore LB Addison Gillam, who are both receiving national attention as breakout stars

Cliff's Note Version:

CU Football is the entire package of what makes college football great... among the best on any measure... and setting the table for a return to elite results.

If you're a fan of another program - any program: you suck, we will make fun of you, and we can back it up because no program comes close to matching CU football on all of the criteria that matter. Also, before you try to run any smack at us, keep in mind that we've been drinking more heavily than usual for the past decade and have been able to stockpile a lot of piss balloons.

:gobuffs:

**** everyone else.

Does that mean we can stop talking about the football program as the Little Engine That Could and actually decide to play big boy football? In 2014, not 2018?

Yes.

I'm not going into a single game expecting the worst.

Last year, we beat who we were supposed to. That bar gets raised in 2014.

And we should certainly NEVER expect to lose a home game.

I'm also sick of making excuses when CU loses a recruiting battle over a priority prospect. That cannot happen here.

It's past time to stop acting like victims and losers.

Is this really what you enjoy as a fan? Try enjoying the spectacle and celebrating the greatness and toasting the victories, but without the need to belittle other programs, be arrogant, or trash talk. I think you will find that you will actually enjoy sports more that way.

That said, if it is done in a spirit of fun and underlying respect, I love the trash talk aspect of being a fan.

I think this post is a year too early. My koolaid intake will be severely restricted until we beat a good team.

I'm with you Nik, I have barrels full of piss balloons that I've been preparing for this season!!

I hope when this team turns the corner, they have the same swagger we had in the 80s and 90s. The Buffs had such an attitude; not afraid of any school (ie Miami). We'd get hit and hit back just as hard or harder. I remember Rick Grunden telling me the reason he came to Colorado was because he just wanted to smash people...paraphrasing. Recruited by ASU, they had better facilities and better recruiting (girls, I assume), but he came to CU for the attitude.

do people see us above or below Washington? How about UCLA or Stanford?

Pac-12 is USC at the top with Oregon making a push in the current era.

2nd tier of programs (the near elites) is probably led by Washington with CU, UCLA, Stanford and Arizona State in that mix.

The rest are all good programs with some seasons or periods when they were among the best around.

Deep conference. No real doormat programs. Big 8 & Big 12 were a little different with a few hyper-elites at the top but also some doormats at the bottom. Really had 4 tiers with Texas A&M and CU in the 2nd tier and a 3rd tier of programs that were inconsistent, followed by some perennial bottom feeders.

Nik -

The Buffs have always had their rightful place in CFB lore. The Swag just got a little sidetracked over the last 7 or so years and is slowly returning. They will get there.

**** you!

is there a special brand of arrogance font?

It looks like this

Right now below, but Udub was a bottom dweller not too long ago. They do have better support and the ability to raise cash faster than we do, but I'd say we are on par historically.

Stanford is a force and under shaw I don't see them moving down. With their name and schools level of commitment to all sports they'll probably never be bottom dwellers.

UCLA is similar to CU historically. Great location. Fan support is mediocre though. If they got their **** together they wouldn't have to be little brother to USC. No reason we can't recruit similar to them, even though they will always get their share of good talent due to location.

Our place in the pac12 is below Oregon and USC. We should be consistently finishing top 3 in the South. Off years will happen since things can fall in place for teams at times. However, we should be south contenders going into the last 3 weeks every year. Taking that next step and bring legitimate conference contenders will be more difficult, but we can't worry about that now. First let's find our place in the south before we talk about pac12 titles.

The longer we suck the harder it is to turn things around. The pac12 is up and with the arms race going on it'll take 4-5 years to be good. We need a legitimate spark. That could be Sefo being a jake locker type or hiring a very strong recruiter or having an upset. The facilities will help, but we need something to close better recruits.

Why is our place in the PAC 12 below Oregon? Our height is still better than their run, albeit there's has been a longer run.

I think the term is "what have you done for me lately".

Minnesota has more national championships than us, would you rank them ahead of us?

You're seriously comparing Minnesota's run in the 50's to ours from the late-80's to early 2000's? By that logic we should also be behind Cal in conference because they also have more national titles that are old as ****.

And an Oregon fan would say the same thing about us.

Umm.. you jumped ahead a bit. You seem to suffer from premature interjection.

Just getting to the point.

The way I see it we had to start this drive on our own goal line and during the past decade we are slowly creeping down the field. We'll score in a couple more years.

I don't really care what Oregon fans say, have you met them? Whole bunch of bandwagon fans who will jump on whatever train is going when Helfrich shows he can't keep them at an elite level. CU has shown that when we have the right admin support, CU can be taken to the top so why is our rightful place going forward behind Oregon?

By the way, Minnesota hasn't won the B1G outright since 1938 and haven't shared a conference title since 1967. I was wrong on their titles, their last came in 1960 but they dominated from 1934-1941, pretty different college landscape now.
