D-I Hockey at CU

Quoted for truth. I think the vast majority of us would love to see a D-1 hockey program here. We've been exposed to how this administration works for so long that we can nearly guarantee that it will never happen. There are too many obstacles in place, cost being the major one. But beyond that, you have Title IX, facilities (or lack thereof), and conference affiliation. We'll have a men's gymnastics team before we have a D-1 hockey program.

As for Title IX the easy way around that is to add a men's and women's team at the same time. However the other obstacles remain.

Trouble with this is that hockey is an expensive sport. You have high operational cost for facilities which would be shared by the men and the women. Travel cost are high with road trips that mostly involve mid to longer range airplane flights for a big roster of players, coaches, trainers, etc. Most of these trips are to smaller college cities away from major airports so you are forced into flying charters. You also build up hotel cost and travel meal cost. Equipment cost are high as are training/medical cost.

If it was just men this all wouldn't be as big an issue because mens hockey tends to generate solid ticket revenues as I'm sure it would do in Boulder. The women end up having all the same expenses but don't draw paying crowds, this is where your expense comes from.
