Denver Prep Academy and Colorado Prep Academy Conversation (Colorado Basketball Prep Academies)

With Baye Fall transfer to Denver Prep Academy will be very interesting to see how this impact the Colorado basketball scene. Follows a nationwide trend on the basketball front will be coached by Ray Valdez a longtime Colorado prep figure. Langston Reynolds (denver east's star player and probably the best player in the 2022 cycle in Colorado transferred last year to Colorado Prep Academy. Wonder if this happened years ago if Josh Perkins would have done this as opposed to transferring to Colorado Prep, Ronnie Degray is another name that comes in mind. From a Colorado recruiting standpoint will probably get kids more exposure to programs nationwide giving Tad more competition to keep top kids in state for college. However, it might keep top kids for going to east coast prep schools. Thoughts?

Luv Colorado having 2 teams competing -Nationally- on The Grind Session now! I agree it could get Colorado players more exposure, and potentially more competition for those players with CU and Tad’s staff. But, overall, it has to be a net positive for basketball in state of Colorado and even for CU. Especially, since it can attract out-of-state players to both schools, which gives CU larger local talent-base. Like Keither Florence - from Kansas, now playing on Colorado Prep Academy. Luv Baye Fall to Denver Prep Academy!

Just a thought. 2023 feels like the biggest pool of big men we've had in Colorado HS for quite some time. Fall, Betts, Diop, Ndongo, and Booth. I think it's critical to land at least one of these guys. We really need some more size and length on the block.

Had the Denver West Boys last night. Heard they were 13-0 and was kind of skeptical because they've sucked for so long...........but holy hell. The team they played was terrible, but **** they were impressive. Tenacious defenders. They're all really athletic, too. Couldn't hear what the coach said his name was when I met him last night-but he coaches those kids hard.....because the kids let him.

No idea how they're being recruited, but they're 4a state title good.

Please excuse this old guy rabbit hole, but way, way back in the mid-80s, West had a 6-9 kid named Robert Coyne who signed with KU in the same class as Mark Randall, but I don't think they were good enough to get over the hump vs the top of the DPL.., which back then was Manual/GW/Montbello.

Nice. Yeah Denver's been weird because Aurora now competes with them in basketball.

Not to be racist, because I'm just talking about cultural differences, but the fact that a lot of the black kids live in Aurora now while DPS is predominantly Latino anymore has changed the basketball landscape. I don't follow soccer at all, but I'd imagine DPS schools are a lot better at that than they used to be.

DPS schools have had good soccer teams going back to the late 80's early 90's. Not always winning championships, but there were always teams ranked in the top 5 in state. East has always been strong. But Denver South has had some good teams over the years. Kennedy had some really strong soccer teams in the early 90's.

I think school choice has had a bigger impact on the quality of DPS athletics than the racial make-up of the neighborhoods. Back when DPL teams were winning basketball championships, kids mainly went to their home school unless they went to a private school like Mullen or Regis. Now, the top kids can pretty much pick whichever school they want to play at. Also, DPS is a ****-show academically with traditional high schools shrinking, and dozens of charter schools popping up in the last decade or so. I imagine a lot of kids/parents want to escape that kind of environment if athletics is important.

That all makes a lot of sense. It's been kinda weird seeing my old high school competing against West.

That district is shifting east enrollment wise. JFK's in Bear Valley. Their enrollment continues to drop. Lincoln same deal. Northfield's out by the airport, and theirs has exploded. Denver's also coming up with these DSST schools (stands for Denver School of Science and Technology). There's not one that I know of really close to JFK, but people I know at Lincoln have told me they've lost kids to DSST: College View.

JFK has one thing going for it. and that's the mess that Jeffco Schools is right now. That school is close enough to three different Jeffco articulation areas (Bear Creek, Alameda, and Lakewood) to where you could easily open enroll your kids at one if you lived there depending on your own circumstances. Jeffco has had an epidemic of issues with crimes against children lately, and I'll give you three examples. David Weiss (former Jeffco Chief of Staff) was arrested for Child Porn and he killed himself over the holidays. I taught a summer school class in I think 2022. Imagine Ewer was working as I think a nurse/office aide. Can't say I was shocked to hear she got arrested for an inappropriate relationship with a minor last year. She was sentenced to four years last year. Luis Robles was a bilingual family liaision for almost my entire time working at Creighton, and he got arrested right on a year ago for sexually assaulting kids in his classroom. He's going on trial sometime this spring from what I've heard.

Imagine Ewer is not exactly the kind of woman that the other kids are going to be jealous of a classmate getting busy with, is she? Not like Carrie McCandless....

I really don't care what the other kids think here. This is disgusting no matter who does it!

Sad that it has to happen but unfortunately I think we have only seen the tip if the iceberg on innapropriate reltionships between students and staff members. Prior to my retirement my district (Which wasn't a large one with only two medium sized high schools) had three consecutive years with a teacher walked out of a school building in handcuffs.

It won't be given as much media attention as the Clergy scandals because the public schools are very hard to sue so the lawyers won't target them the same way. Some of the wealthier private schools will likely get hit very hard.

With the shortage of teacher candidates a lot of schools are not being as selective about hiring as they normally would be.

Should probably update it to grampa simpson to reflect the urge I had to post a wall of a text on mid 80's colorado prep hoops.
Please do! My buddies and I grew up playing in that era ('87-'91) and when we didn't have a game, we were traveling all over the city to watch legendary players or trying to get on the court at Utah Park to play with/against them. Epic days.

To me Robert Coyne was the most talented guy in that class. He didn't materialize into a great college player because he had a couple of issues, but he could really play. Better than Mark Randall and Michael Christian who got cut short due to a leg issue.

That era had a lot of guys that could get things done.

Our state produced some very legit talent in the 70's and 80's. Wasn't it Craig Jackson 84' (UCLA) from Montbello, Michael Christian 86' (Ga. Tech) from Mullen and then Chucky Sproling 88' (St. Johns) from Manuel? Jamal Coleman 88' started at (Missou) via Mullen. These guys were our state's 5*'s and Colorado's Mr. Basketball who could play anywhere, then Chauncey in the 90's. Denver/DPL put out some sick players in the 80's-94'.

True story: As a freshman, I was thrown in to guard Jamal Coleman late in a loss in the old Mullen fieldhouse. I still have the way too vivid image of him dunking over me framed by the asbestos riddled ceiling of that gym.

Old Mullen field house, best basketball gym in Denver. Those Regis v Mullen tilts in the late 70’s were a riot, literally in the parking lot. I learned to hate red very early in life.

Chucky was so fun to watch in HS. Absolutely amazing player. That said, I'm convinced Darryl's Soul Glo in Coming to America was 100% based on Chucky.
