I heard it was funded by some guy who made all his money in mining, and he requested that the building resemble mine shafts. At least that's what one of my engineering professors told me.
Ah yeah I think that's what it was.
i read somewhere that the structures were the inspiration for the whole "transformers" brand, but some incompetent attorney ****ed up the royalty rights for the university
