Does Mike MacIntyre do enough in public engagement?

Another Spring, another year of mostly closed practices. Mostly generic press conferences periodically throughout the year. No real excitement due to a lot of losses, but also a head coach who does not seem particularly inclined to do much of anything outside of the bare essentials as it relates to the fanbase.

1. Does Mike MacIntyre need to do more?

2. Has the AD dropped the ball in not expecting much from Mike MacIntyre in this area?

I don't hear much from him other than post game, recruiting and spring activities.

Doesn't seem like the fans are on his list of things to be concerned about.

Yes, I think he should do more. Does RG trust him in this area?

Yep. It's about winning at this point.

After a decade without a bowl, very few CU fans are going to respond much to talk.

I'd like to see more marketing, though.

I don't have much expectations here, but I'm used to the local college HC doing their weekly radio show from a local restaurant or bar and taking (well screened) questions from fans and patrons, signing autographs and posing for pix at the breaks. If HCMM does that, I've missed any mention of it in three years here, and it's the kinda thing I'd normally pick up on.

Agree with the winning comments above. Until CU shakes the label "perennial loser", it's going to be a tough sell. In situations like this, I'm used to seeing the local college team promote the conference more (ads that imply without stating, "we know you're not coming to see us, but check out our opponent...").

I'll relay one story. A few years ago, MM was part of a contingent from the AD who attended the Boulder County Business Hall of fame induction for Lila Stewart. I was working on a committee with Lila at the time so I was at the table right next to the table where all the AD staff were seated. (Yes even Plati was there- he and Lila get along real well, but I digress).
MM spent the entire luncheon looking like he'd rather be getting a root canal.

What does any of this mean? Nothing I suppose. It just struck me as odd that the guy made it pretty obvious to anybody in the immediate vicinity that he would rather be someplace else. I don't think he feels comfortable in front of and part of a crowd.

Some guys are just football coaches, while others are just personalities. Ideally, you want someone with a little bit of both, but MM is clearly just a coach and isn't into public interaction.

This is 100% RG driven MM is very open engaging and linked up to big money, but if you aren't rolling at least 5 figures annually at the program RG, the foundation, and by extension MM dont do much.

Winning begets interest. Right now if all practices were open, the 150 of us that follow this site with too much interest would be the only people lining up for more,

At the end of the day, it doesn't really bother me much. Hawkins was very outgoing at first, but events eventually made me hate every word that came out of his mouth.

So let's lay out a realistic hypothetical that the team wins six games and goes to a bowl. If I read this thread correctly, people would be content with MM giving some token interviews and just moving on from there. I would hope MM is losing sleep from doing interviews coast to coast in that situation. Like doing multiple interviews every day. Would MM or the AD be ready for anything resembling that scenario? If not, why not?

We'll worry about how we react when we get there, we need to get there first. With that said - RG is media savvy enough from his previous gigs to make sure that we handle it reasonably well.

To be clear i think it is Ricks job to direct this, Mike go here, Mike show up for this interview, Mike, Joel wants you on at 2 etc...

You're asking us to make predictions about what would happen if we do something we haven't done in ten years. Let's get to that point first.

1. He should do more, but pr wise the guy hasn't shown to be that interesting. He relies too much on hyperbole, with little to no insight(e.g. what do you think of the offense this spring, coach? Well, I think the offense will be awesome, just awesome!). The only time I think we're getting thoughtful or honest answers from him is after losses.

2. It is on the AD to get more out of him however. A media roundtable might get you some tweets and a few articles, but a press conference might get you on the local news on a slow news night. I know there's not a ton to get excited about his tenure right now, but there's some room to build a little hype before next season, or the spring game even. There's still people locally who can't remember the guy's name, some offseason pub can't hurt, and it can't hurt CU's brand either, especially if next season turns out alright.

The bottom line is that when you're 4-9, people don't really care what you have to say. I'd rather get the silent treatment than hear about how great the players are doing in the classroom or weight room. The only things MM could say at this point is stuff I really don't care about.

What do you expect/want to hear from MM in all these media/fan out reaches, Duff?
Something interesting. Even the most diehard fans really only know he is a nice guy who carries himself in a professional manner and that he lost a lot of weight a couple years ago. There has to be something more... right?

I think this is one of the reasons why his ceiling is 6-7 wins. Not really exciting, probably doesn't like doing media stuff, etc.

Maybe he'll do a 180 if he sees some sunlight from the bunker door, but until then he's probably just doing mandatory stuff.

So you want to hear more about his personal life and who he is as a person?

Holy ****. I'll give you an answer about how people would feel about MM if he was talking to the fan base and trying to instill some excitement around a team that's going to struggle to get to a bowl: How do CU fans feel about the job Hawk did?

Hawk is the polar opposite- all sizzle, no steak. Even still after 3 seasons with abysmal results, I still feel like there is some "steak" with this coach- primarily because he hasn't tried to excite me about a ****ty team that he knows is ****ty.

There are only so many weight room records and dominant practice reports you can talk to the media about. He tried pumping the bowl game mentality during preseason and it didn't work out, he's talked about the transition from a sophomore/junior team to a junior/senior team and how that will pay dividends, he's become more active on social media as time has gone on, etc. It just all gets really stale and falls on deaf ears when the team doesn't live up to any of the hype he has put out there in the past.

No sizzle and no steak is better than all sizzle and no steak.

HCMM can let his football team speak for him on gameday. I don't really care what he has to say. Just ****ing win.

Agreed. He has always tried not to directly **** on the team and players in the media, but I think he has been very frank at times about the level of talent he inherited and where this program was when he took over.

idk, even me the consummate pessimist, was pretty excited after signing day. Maybe I haven't paid attention enough, but has he been doing local radio? Some newspaper articles with some quotes? Dare I even ask a TV appearance?

I think there was or still is some opening for some excitement about the program. Weird that you of all people is acting like there's nothing to say.
