ESPN suggests that Nebraska will be favored to start the season 3-0

Hmmmmm.......

ESPN suggests that Nebraska will be favored to start the season 3-0 in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Huskers are given a 89.3% chance to defeat Akron, a 79.9% chance over Colorado and a 87.1% chance against Troy. Great, but then that killer conference schedule comes into play

Considering Nebraska's all-time record at home and its all-time record against Colorado (especially at home), 79.9% is a major closing of the gap.

It will be interesting. Frost did not seem to emphasize defense at UCF and last year the Huskers were bad on defense. I expect the early line to be NU -9.

I heard they got that predicition on tape...Sean Miller was all about NU....

The level of improvement being touted is staggering for a team that does not know how to win, was terrible at defense, has to start a new QB with potentially ZERO experience in a new system that all the players do not know. There is not a difference in the talent between these two teams, and the consistency that Colorado has in terms of scheme, QB, and coaching will make the difference. Nebraska has the crowd, and a few play makers, mainly at WR, but this is not a good team. They even have a new kicker and their punter is below average. These things all matter, and therefore I feel good about the Buffs bringing some heat to the Big Red and knocking them into reality. If this was the 7th or 8th game of the season, things would be different, but they will be playing their 2nd game of the whole new regime, and thus things will not be clean, and Frost's play calling will not matter if they do not know what to do!!! This may be the first game I bet on in 20 years if the spread is more than 7-10!!!

Oh and by the way, TROY is not a bad football team at all and could roll in and beat them as well. Would love to see them at 1-2 with the schedule they need to play ahead of them!!! There is a chance they finish 1-11 if they create no momentum and do not get the systems down. Illinois is the only other game late in the season that they may win if things do not click. 2-10 would be hilariously possible.

Its more likely NU starts 1-2 or 0-3 than 3-0. I've been saying this since MM was so focused on the Ole Miss job he thought he had that we got destroyed by Utah in last year's finale-This team MUST make a bowl for Mike MacIntyre to be the head coach here in 2019. Rick George (who talked about this program winning Pac 12 championships in.....2020 or 2021?) cannot make that kind of statement and then fail to back it up if this team misses bowls two years in a row, regardless of how big MM's buyout is. There's no reason a team that should go to a bowl from our league should lose to a Big 10 bottom feeder, middling MWC team, or FCS opponent.

This is where my head is. You have not been hearing any reports about their D. Their O is going to struggle with new schemes and groupings while the D is going to be down from last season. No way that D is going to improve that much in a summer. Their LBs are bad, their D back end is bad.

I will be driving through the entire state of Nebraska tomorrow wearing my CU gear and flipping the bird to any all nub fans

You may just want to photo copy a picture of the gesture and hang it from your window. Its that bad! I do the same pretty much on my daily driving in Omaha, and I’m exhausted by the time I get out of my car! Between license plates, car decals, car color, and dips in red...it can be overwhelming...not to mention the businesses with “husker” or “cornhusker” in the name. Give them the bird too!!

I am confused. Are people offended that the Fuskers are favored because they think CU should be favored, or because of the hate of the corn? I can get behind the latter. I just can't get offended by not being favored in any road game the Buffs play this season. The Buffs run an offense that leaves their undersized defense gassed at the end of games, a QB that regressed last season, and an unproven OC. I hope it all clicks, but I see this season being a big success if they get to 6 wins.

I am offended that the conclusion is being reached based on slamming Frost's success at UCF against Group of 5 teams, and a Nebraska team with less talent than they realize, and playing one of the most difficult schedules of the year. My issue is that Colorado is near the same estimated percentage to lose as a terrible lower division team, and not a Power 5 team like we actually are. Montez did not regress, but the WR's did! I feel that anyone would be better than Lindgren, and am excited to see what Chev does. Will I still yell at the TV when he makes a stupid play call, your damn right I will!!!

I always have a good time listening to the little nerd color analyst providing whiny, crybaby commentary on the Huckster Radio Network. When I hear or see that cornholer U is getting pounded I like to get in a car and tune in. He is just allsome to listen to when Wisconsin et al. is opening a can on Goober U.

He may be an ex-player but his nasal whiny delivery of excuse after excuse makes him sound like Wally Cox. I'll have to record next season's game against the Buffs. Should be a classic.

Except that's not what the conclusion is being reached on at all? You seem to have no idea what you're actually arguing against. Frost and his UCF success has no effect on it besides the stated "with all else equal, a team’s predictive offensive, defensive and special teams ratings will regress slightly to the mean with the addition of a new coach", and it's evaluation on Nebraska's talent is purely based on statistics like recruiting rankings, past performance, and returning production.

There's no bias here, if you disagree with the computer's process then that is what it is but being offended by a computer is silly. ESPN even states that it's flawed, "Preseason ratings historically have their flaws, but ultimately they allow for an opponent adjustment after Week 1 and are a great tool to preview the season. As noted, there are four components to the preseason rating: prior performance, returning starters, recruiting rankings and coaching tenure."

And what does playing one of the most difficult schedules have to do with what they project them to do against CU? They favor them in just 6 games with a 5.5-6.5 average record so it obviously acknowledges that.

Genuinely curious how you can say Montez regressed? I think you forget, it's a lot different being the full time starter and your weaknesses will show the more you play. I think Steven got a lot better in certain areas and still needs work in others. But I wouldn't say he regressed.

Decided to take another look at some notable stats:

Points given up per game last season:

CU 28.2
NU 36.4

Defense Rushing Yards Last Season.

CU 2496
NU 2577

CU gave up 300 more yards through the air but we are talking about the Pac-12 offenses that operate in more ideal weather for those types of offenses to the Big Ten where the running game is more ideal. Older CU fans know this firsthand from the Big 8/Big 12 North days.

Everyone is probably down on the Buffs mainly because CU will have a new starting RB and three new starting WRs and it appears that CU is going to be able to mitigate those losses with McMillian, Ento, Winfree, and Jay MacIntyre plus we have Shenault and Nixon behind them. Montez has a QBs coach that is not the offensive coordinator for the first time. People are down on the Buffs due to last season's defense but we get some starters from last season back plus some intriguing talent. The only concern I have about CU's offense is how much the loss of Lindsay's intangibles could affect that side of the ball this upcoming season. And let's not forget the new co-OCs...from on the outside, it would appear that CU has many questions that need to be answered.

Now flipping to Nebraska. Given my history with option offenses as a football fan and player, I honestly can't be any more excited for what Scott Frost could bring to Nebraska. But who will be the QB? Taking a look at NU's roster, it appears that Adrian Martinez is in Lincoln this spring. He did miss his senior season due to injury. They have Noah Verdal who made a little impact for UCF but he can't play this season. Does the idiots from the college football media not realize that there is no senior or junior at QB for the Huskers? Especially when a new offense is being installed? Perhaps they are still in awe what UCF achieved but isn't it going to be easier to turn a G5 school around quicker than a P5 school? I didn't post NU's rushing numbers on offense last season but they didn't even get 110 yards per game so maybe that Husker OL needs some work.

I'm more concerned about the 2019 game at Folsom Field than I am with this year's game when it comes to the Buffs. I think Scott Frost is going to do well in Lincoln but he's going to need at least one season to flush that Riley garbage down the drain. Maybe I'm wrong in all of this but again, first year of a new system and playing against a former hated rival with some veterans at key positions doesn't sound like a recipe for a win over the Buffs.
