February 2nd Signing Day - Where we are, what to look for

The early signing day in December is the big one since it became a thing. But there's still significant opportunity in February. Some programs such as Utah do their best work in the second period.

First, where we are with this year's class.

December Signings (21)
QB - Owen McCown
RB - Victor Venn
WR - Jordyn Tyson, Chase Sowell, Grant Page (ATH)
TE - Zach Courtney
OL - Carter Edwards, Travis Gray
DL - Aaron Austin
LB - Aubrey Smith, Eoghan Kerry, Shakaun Bowser, Kaden Ludwick, Isaac Hurtado (JC)
CB - Joshua Wiggins, Jason Oliver, Simeon Harris, Keyshon Mills
S - Dylan Dixson, Xavier Smith, Oakie Salave'a (ATH)

February Commitments (1)
OL - Van Wells

Buffs have also accepted 4 transfers (OL-Tommy Brown, WR-RJ Sneed, DE/OLB-Chance Main, QB-Maddox Kopp), so we're at 26 new additions.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the rule this year is that you can take up to 32 instead of the normal 25 as long as those extra 7 are transfers. ????

Going on that assumption, we can take up to 6 more new players but at least 3 of them would have to be transfers.

From the transfer portal, I believe that we need to bring in 2 DBs since we lost so much from veterans there, 1 OL (probably interior), and 1 DL (pass rush focus).

That would leave room for 2 more prep signings (or JC). For that, I'd go with 2 DLs or maybe BPA between RB and OL.

I'm not opposed to going all transfer, though.

I actually think the incoming “class” (transfers included) is pretty solid. LB is especially good, IMO, along with WR and DB.
Yeah. There's not much on either end of the bell curve, but there's a sh!t ton of solid. That should produce some breakout guys and a lot of competent depth from this class. We'll have our misses, but I don't see the usual "of course he was a miss, I could have told you that" or "crap, the class was top heavy and those guys washing out left us with garbage".

Looks like you're missing Kaden Ludwick at LB from the December signing period. That means CU has counters left for up to three more HS signees. Six counters left total, which could all be used on transfers or a mix. Will be interesting to see how CU decides to fill the remaining counters. I believe CU has an extra counter available from last year, but in my calculation I've given that to the punter Logan.

QB and OL are less than solid IMO. By quite a bit.

Addition of McCown and a healthy Shrout is definitely an improvement though
Plus Kopp.

Frankly, I've given up on trying to project QBs. As long as it's a guy other programs want, I'm not going to get too high or low. I've got a preference for being a certain size and bringing some dual-threat ability, but it's not like those are anything more than odds improvements. Most of the position seems to be about leadership and how quickly you can process what you're seeing -- hard to project that by looking at a highlight tape and reading some camp measurements.

Regarding McCown, I'm looking at a guy who is over 6'1", had a couple other P5 offers, had a dad & uncle who played in the NFL (plus another uncle who played QB at aTm), has a big arm, and was a good enough athlete to be a well-regarded HS basketball player. Doesn't look like a bad recruit to me.

I'm with you on OL. It needed to be a big recruiting year there in 2022 along with some more attrition and we didn't achieve that. I expect a lot of movement in the spring. Considering the OL coaching situation, I think it's best to have kept it light, then add another transfer or two or unexpected BPA recruit, and focus on 2023 preps. Rod was a disaster it's going to be challenging to dig out from and get the OL where it needs to be. One thing that could be a big deal for the talent level would be if Carson Lee can be salvaged after the assault charge. I see he's still engaged (he retweeted the Tommy Brown news & still lists himself as a CU player in his profile), so I have some hope on that one.

They need to start building OL depth with kids out of high school or they will never get out of the hole. There is a severe need on both sides of the ball in the trenches. Transfer are like cocaine off of a hookers ass, seems like a good idea at the time until you are addicted and out on the street smoking crack from a pipe with nowhere to go. Need some quality prep players coming in and we are not ringing any bells here

100% agree. I have some confidence that DeVan and So'oto are major improvements to get it to a much better place. But given the timing of things plus Rod being a dumpster fire while Wilson has been a Bernardi-level recruiter, it leaves us with backfilling with JCs & transfers in 2022 and beyond with the prep recruiting being launched in 2023. Much of the work right now, unfortunately, is actually about matriculating guys who don't fit into the plan out of the program. Sucks, but that's the reality.

I would be pleased by this years class. Not many stars but a lot of the guys who fill out depth charts on P5 level teams.

Would look at it saying that even if/when KD is fired we are seeing a better foundation for the next coach to build on.

Unfortunately with the transfer portal and the issues in the school administration just can't get myself to believe that we will be even decent again until some changes happen above the level of RG.

:(

I expect to see more signings of guys where CU is the only P5 offer, and perhaps some where CU is the only FBS offer.

The staff seems intent on signing another DB from the HS ranks. I am not seeing really any other movement with the 2022 class, so I think that will be it for this year.

Saying that, it looks like they can bring in 5 more transfers at that point after one more HS signing.

2 - DB
1 - OL
1 - DL
1 - OLB/DL pass rush specialist

I'd be ok with two more oline transfers, but think defensive backfield needs it more.

Also, is Wilson really going to just not recruit on this staff? He has been awful and if that continues, I hope KD moves on after this year.

2 OL in the early period is unacceptable. All linemen should be early signees, take a late commitment if an opportunity presents.

Right now we don't need two. Just because Fontenot is done next year doesn't mean we need to take two more this year. There are plenty of positions that need more attention. Or do we now have plenty of depth?

We need one RB from High school and one that can play right away. Running backs can get banged up easily. Look at the injury history of the running backs on the roster. 3 RB and 1 FB is not ideal for a team like CU that wants to run the ball.

One will suffice.
