Not a scientific survey by any means, but on Saturday before the games I was hiding my Wisconsin allegiances. Got into three different discussions with probably nine total people and everyone was cheering for Kentucky over Wisconsin. this really surprised me, not because I think that many people love Wiscosin, but I has assumed most would be rooting for the Badgers because:
1. the stereotype is that everyone loves an underdog. I'm not sure. I heard multiple versions of the comment "we haven't had an undefeated team in so long, it would be neat to see"
2. the way the teams are built. having no dog in the fight, wouldn't most people root for the team built from 4 year guys vs. a collection of "one and dones"? apparently not.
3. academics: again, having no dog in the fight, wouldn't most cheer for the AAU school from the B1G versus a sellout from the SEC? apparently not.
4. Calipari: if nothing else, does't the rule of "always root against Calipari" come to play?
I'm starting to think that when it comes to picking teams, I think American's like jumping on bandwagons more than any other factor.
