First USAToday Coaches poll

That's what I expected last year, no biggie. They'll get more credit for this season based on how they played last season if they start strong.

After finishing at 15 last season, I would expect CU to still be in the top 25. I'm a bit disappointed actually.

3-0 to start the year may put us in the top 20 (depending on other games), could get us College Game Day against UW.
#7 UW at #? CU
Not many good games that week to compete with:

Others of note:
#8 OU (at Ohio st week 2) at Baylor
TCU (at Ark week 2) at #11Okie State
UCLA (if beat a&m and Memphis) at #14Stanford (say they beat #4 USC in week 2)
NC state at #3 FSU (gameday already in ATL for week 1 vs bama plus FSU plays Miami week 3 which is gameday option)
ND (plays UGA week 2) at MIch St (if they both start strong)

Game Day Guesses
Wk 1: Bama / FSU (confirmed)
Wk 2: Georgia at Notre Dame (coverage of Ara Parseghian is a plus, two blue bloods in interesting non conference matchup)
Wk 3: Clemson at Louisville

Think our chances are pretty good assuming CU and UW are 3-0 at the time.

Anyone know what the FCS division schedule looks like that week? Given that slate of possible games for Gameday, I wouldn't be surprised if they take that week for their annual visit to an FCS campus.

Decided to not be lazy and look it up myself.

From pre-season Athlon rankings, week 4 in FCS brings us:
#8 Villanova @ #20 Albany
#23 Liberty @ #9 Jacksonville State

So no real big games unless there's a lot of movement - given that the most movement happens the first few weeks of the year though, I wouldn't completely write off the chance that GD visits an FCS school that weekend.

I think there is probably a 0% chance ESPN does a Liberty game.

And while I'm looking at schedules, I decided to look at the 11 teams above us in the rankings first three games to discern how high we could, within reason, be ranked by the time UW comes to town. Given our weak schedule for the first three weeks, we're only moving up if others move down.

#26 - WSU. Montana State, Boise State, Oregon State.
#25 - Utah. North Dakota (Not NDSU), BYU, San Diego State
#24 - Tennessee. @ Georgia Tech, Indiana State, @ #16 Florida.
#23 - Texas. Maryland, San Jose State, and @ #4 U$C.
#22 - Virginia Tech. #20 West Virginia, Delaware, @ East Carolina.
#21 - South Florida. @ San Jose State, Stony Brook, @ UCONN.
#20 - West Virginia. @ #22 Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Delaware State.
#19 - KjSU. Central Arkansas, Charlotte, @ Vanderbilt
#18 - Miami. Bethune Cookman, Arkansas State, @ #3 FSU.
#17 - Louisville. @ Purdue, @ UNC, #5 Clemson.
#16 - Florida. @ #9 Michigan, Northern Colorado, # 24 Tennessee.

One of WSU or Utah will lose one of their first three games. I could see both of them losing a game too: CU: 26 or 25
Tennessee will lose one game. CU: 25 or 24
Texas will lose one game: CU 24 or 23
One of VT and WVU are guaranteed to lose a game: CU 23 or 22
USF and KjSU will both start 3-0: CU 23 or 22
Miami will lose to FSU, but not badly, and won't drop much in the polls: CU 23 or 22
Louisville will not lose to Clemson badly, and might win: CU 23 or 22
Florida would have to lose to both Michigan and Tennessee to drop below us in the first 3 weeks, I don't see it: CU 23 or 22.

Realistically, I see it hard for us to climb into the top 20 the first three weeks, it's much more likely we'll just barely be ranked. At first glance #7 @ #23 isn't much of a Game Day draw, but there is likely no other top 25 match ups, and the ESPN crew knows that Boulder is beautiful in late September, so I'd put the chances at 1 in 3 we'll finally get the crew back in Boulder.

Also: we are all big San Jose State fans the first three weeks of the season. Go Spartans!

Michigan is not a top ten team and LSU is not a top 20 team.
Agree on Michigan.
I think LSU could be very good by mid year. I like Aranda and Canada a lot. I was never a big Orgeron fan as a HC but having Aranda as DC is a huge help and Canada was a great hire. I just think they have so much talent that was so under-utilized by the last coach.

The schedule is quite favorable, but I think they are a year away. The OL starter they just lost is a big blow.

Hadn't seen that.

I think this is the put up or shut up for Florida as well. Not convinced their HC has the IT FACTOR.

Florida is in such a weird position. Consistent favorite to win the SEC East, but not really gaining ground with the West or FSU. McElwain just does not seem to "fit."

View attachment 23169 The important news is csu got one vote. **** Matt Stephens!
Does CSU buy more advertising or is our relationship just not a priority for CU PR?

It almost seems like CU is sitting back waiting for more chips to fall with the changing media landscape
1) relationship with DP and media
2) Pac-12 Network distribution (more on the conference, but it sort of fits a theme)

Would like to see our PR/marketing team get more proactive. Strengthening your brand in college football is important and I think there is a lot of fertile ground for improvement. Ticket sales, national relevance, apparel sales and recruiting are all heavily affected by this sort of thing.

Matt Stephens is the Deputy Sports Editor for DP, worked the CSU beat for the Coloradoan for like 5 years and has lived in Fort Collins for over a decade. His Twitter bio says "CSU, CU, Denver Pro Sports" now that he's supposed to be unbiased to Colorado sports, but there will always be a heavy CSU slant from the DP with him there. BTW, even though they rarely talk college sports, 104.3 The Fan has a pretty heavy CU slant with Big Al, Chad Brown, Charles Johnson, Mike Pritchard. Tyler Polumbus used to be a regular on there as well but has since switched to 760 AM.

Matt Stephens blows chunks, and has never hid his love of the Rams. Sucks that he is now running things at the Denver Post - but luckily that newspaper has never had less influence then it does now.

CSU beats SW Missouri State Tech in the 2017 Who Gives a **** Bowl. The Rams played their heart out and won a tight game 58-55, in front of a crowd of nearly 8,000 rowdy fans. The victory sets up next year's squad to contend for the Mountain West title and for a few Rams to get early Heisman Trophy looks. The victory also justifies a P5 invite from all five major conferences.

In other news, the University of Colorado won the National Championship.

The Rams open up next season on the road against Oregon State.
