Game Day!!! Men's Bball faces San Diego in 1st home game of the season (Saturday, 11/16, 8:00 PM MT, Pac 12 Network)

Regarding Walton, I thought he looked immensely better than he did in Shanghai. He looked like Lurch lumbering around in China, last night he actually moved fairly well, even if he’s still a little rusty. 16 hour flights can’t beat easy on a 7 footer with a bad knee.

I’ll come out and say it because it hasn’t been said: Seiwert looks pretty good. When we needed a 3 to drop, he hit it.
With Siewert and Gatling, we're in the great position of having the first 2 guys off our bench be stater-quality and fully capable of delivering a double digit scoring night. Just need them to stay within themselves and not force things.

Continuing on the bench theme, got to also love that we've got 2 guys who we can bring in for a big defensive impact with Walton and Parquet. Walton's height is disruptive to an offense and Parquet is maybe the best perimeter defender Tad has had in the program.

Last we've got Daniels, who looks like he's got everything we could want. Good length, good quicks, very bouncy and has a nice looking shot. But also doesn't seem to really know where he's supposed to be yet in the offense or with the defensive rotations. He's a little bit lost. That seems typical of Tad's newcomers that it takes them 8-12 games before they get it.

He'll get better with time I'd think. He's still in the finding trust in his knee stage, and the rust will dwindle down with time as well.

Good win for the Buffs. You got to love that defensive effort overall although I think two players might need some conditioning runs based on what I saw.

It was good to see Walton back but I don't think he will get going until conference play at the earliest
I liked the second half where we were attacking the basket. I like what I'm seeing from Swartz and he could be one heck of a player next season at this rate. But who will be the PG after IV and Gatling leave after this season? I noticed that Boyle might be putting a little more pressure on Kountz but I just don't see him as the PG next year right now. If IV comes back next year, that would give the Buffs a major boost but still, if I was him, I'd still go to the NBA...similar issue as Viska for football.

I hope we get more looks at the other players in the coming weeks. Maybe we will see who the new PG will be next year.

Keeshawn will be the PG next year if McKinley leaves. It's already been decided. End of story. We'll be in great shape,

Parquet really got after it in the gym this off season. His size and conditioning seem night and day from last year. His defense was a pleasant surprise last night.

Kountz is trying too hard. Could be the pressure of being a starter.

Agreed on Siewart and Gatling. Hopefully both of them coming off the bench is a luxury we can afford all season.

The one thing that drives me nuts with Siewert are his head scratching passes leading to turnovers.

I think very telling is the " +/- ". For example, Kountz was -6 as a starter. Daniels, off the bench, at +13. Kin at +23. Well, you can review for yourself, especially for others off the bench.

Walton with a quiet 3 assists.

+/- is not one of my favorite metrics, but I do think this is interesting in this case.

Reason being, it seemed like we struggled whenever Kin was out and the numbers seem to back that up (won by 18, were +23 with Kin on the floor).

Then, I believe that most of the Kountz minutes were when Kin was also on the court -- and despite that he had a negative number. Daniels was in with the reserve rotation and played more while Kin was resting, but still had a positive number. Also telling was that we're not looking at an outlier game where Kountz or Daniels shot really well while the other guy was quiet -- both had very quiet nights on offense.

Too small of a sample set to make conclusions, but if this continues it does point to Daniels being the guy who is playing more winning basketball.

P.S. I also think it is going to be hard for our starting SG this year to get in the flow on offense. With Bey, Kin and Schwartz on the floor, the starting SG ends up being the 4th option and he will end up touching the ball less than that situation would normally cause because our 5th guy, Battey, is a point forward Tad likes to run the offense through. The type of player who is going to thrive in that will be someone who doesn't need to touch the ball a lot and will knock down shots as they come within the flow of things -- a "3 & D" type guy. Gatling is better when he dominates the ball more, so I like him to stay as a bench guy. In terms of Kountz vs Daniels, I'm feeling like Daniels is more likely to be an effective spot up shooter while Kountz is more of a creator with the style of his game. I could see Kountz moving to the bench as this season progresses (and then for Kountz to be our #2 scoring option behind Schwartz next season). I think Kountz is better than Daniels with more upside, but I'm thinking in terms of the flow and chemistry with this year's roster.

I'm biased because I love run and gun basketball, but I'd like to see that more before settling into half court O. Take what's there, if you can get it. Who the 3&D type guy would be, Idk? I haven't seen enough yet. You're right, definitely need that type whether on the break or half court O or D. From what I've seen, we get stagnant in the half court, at times. Then we jack up last second crap end of the shot clock, shot clock violations as well. If the movement is there, instead of standing and watching, they'll get in a better flow.
