Regular season done, fired coaches packing up their offices, other coaches on the move, recruiting season.
No more garbage game of the week, well some of the minor bowls come close, fewer blowouts, instead it’s time to hand out trophies, let’s hope they aren’t like the little cheap ones we all got playing youth football that looked just like the ones they gave to the kids who lost.
On to the conference championship games.
Friday night
What do you do if you don’t have MAC games to watch, you turn on the next best (worst) thing, the C-USA Championship.
This year New Mexico State University (10-3,) normally one of the most downtrodden programs in the country has earned the right to go play (25) Liberty (11-0) for a conference crown. The school that Jerry Falwell built. If Liberty wins will they let the students dance in celebration or will they all just have to sneak off and commit adultery with the pool staff like their founder’s son did.
The big game on Friday is essentially a playoff game for a shot at the National Championship.
(6) Oregon (11-1) against (4) Washington (12-0) in Las Vegas in the last PAC12 football game to be played before the conference falls apart at the seams. Most projections put the winner of this game in the National Playoff. Oregon’s one loss was a 36-33 thriller at Washington.
Saturday
Morning starts with the Big 12 Championship at Jerry World in Arlington.
(7) Texas (11-1) against (20) Oklahoma State (8-3.) If things fall right for the Texas has an outside shot at the playoff. Okie State would love to give them a loss in the last game before the Longhorns take their football to the SEC.
Two games in the mid-afternoon to pay attention to.
SMU (10-2) is at (23) Tulane (11-1)for the AAC Championship. No playoff on the line but a Tulane win would make them the favorite over Liberty for the G5 slot in the New Years 6 bowls.
Few people will be watching that one though because most eyes will be on the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.
(1) Georgia (12-0) takes on (8) Alabama (11-1.) Georgia is likely in the playoff win or lose but some scenarios put Alabama in if they can pull off the upset. Georgia looking for their 3rd straight National Championship. Alabama is that last team to beat them back in the 2021 SEC Championship Game.
Another to not pay attention to. The MAC Championship Miami OH (10-2) and Toledo (11-1.) Do these guys even know how to play in the daylight?
Appalachian State (8-4) is at Troy (10-2) for the Sun Belt Title
Two more games in the evening.
ACC Championship in Charlotte with (10) Louisville (10-2) and (5) Florida State (12-0.) Cardinal are still in the game despite losing their last game, and any hope for the playoff, to Kentucky. Big question is if Florida State can stay undefeated despite losing their star QB do they get a spot in the playoff ahead of a potential one loss team from the PAC12, B1G, or SEC?
Not many questions in the other evening game. The Big Ten plays their Championship Game in Indianapolis in likely the least suspenseful game of the day.
(3) Michigan (12-0) gets their coach back, not that it will likely matter against (17) Iowa (10-2) who somehow managed to win 10 games despite one of the most impotent offenses among all P5 schools. Only once in their last six games did the Hawkeyes manage to score more than 20 points yet they still managed to win 5 of those. Unlike Nebraska, scoring 13 points isn’t going to get them a win over Michigan. This one could end up as the blowout of the week.
For all those Mountain West (Worst) fans Boise State (7-5) despite a rough start and firing their coach has ended up in the Championship game against UNLV (9-3) in Las Vegas. Shows how far the MWC has fallen.
And in Division 2 don’t forget that (1) Colorado School of Mines (12-0) takes on Central Washington (9-3) in Golden as they pursue a National Championship.
