After a rough start to the season that saw lacrosse (0-3) lose its first 3 (all to ranked teams and all on the road), the team now starts a 5 game homestand over the next ~3 weeks, starting with 2 more ranked teams. 1st off this Friday is the season's home opener with the (#21 in the media poll/ #25 per the coaches') Army Black Knights (3-0). Then, Saturday March 8th, the #7 Michigan Wolverines (3-1) roll into town. Then, to finish this particular thread, Tuesday March 11th sees the Marquette Golden Eagles (3-1) visit Boulder for a matinee matchup. (I normally wouldn't include games this spread out in 1 thread, but know I'll be travelling home during the Marquette game, so wanted to get their game covered ahead of time.)

Note - As has been announced, Prentup Field has become lax's official home field. However, due to weather (?***), it's been announced in the below post that Friday's home opener is now going to be competed in CU's Indoor Practice Facility (IPF). (***I'm thousands of miles away, but my weather app shows Boulder weather being rather nice on Friday, so don't know if it's mainly Prentup not having had time to recover from the snow or ???)

Note 2 - As has been the case for most sports outside football, I'll assume most if not all CU home and Big 12 conference games will be shown on ESPN+, and that IS the case for these 1st 3 home games. (Links to the individual streams are available later in this thread.

Go Buffs!!!

Colorado Lacrosse to Brawl with No. 25 Army West Point in Home Opener

The Buffs are 8-3 in home openers and will face the Black Knights for the first time

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado lacrosse team (0-3, 0-0 Big 12) plays its first home game of the season against No. 25-ranked Army West Point this Friday, Feb. 28, at the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) at 6 p.m. MT.

This is the first time the two programs will face each other, and Army West Point is the Buffs' first Patriot League opponent. When it comes to home openers, Colorado is 8-3 all-time.

Colorado struggled on the road in Evanston, Ill., against then-No. 3 Northwestern. Though freshman goalkeeper Elena Oh saw her first start for the Buffs and a solid first half, only junior midfielder Lily Assini managed more than one goal against the Wildcats (2). Unable to create offensive opportunities, the Buffs fell, 20-5. The Black and Gold are now 1-5 all-time against the Wildcats.

THIS WEEK

OPENING DRAW (TL;DR)
  • CU is led by 12th-year head coach Ann Elliott Whidden, who has led the Buffs to a 122-70 (.635) record as CU's first and only head lacrosse coach. Coach Whidden has led the Buffs to three NCAA tournament appearances.
  • After stints in the MPSF and Pac-12, Colorado is playing the 2025 season in the Big 12 Conference for its inaugural lacrosse season. In conference play, the Buffs will go head-to-head with Arizona State and Cincinnati from the Big 12, as well as Florida, UC Davis and San Diego State who are conference affiliates. CU lacrosse is 64-26 (.711) all-time in conference play.
  • Following the first 11 seasons of CU Lacrosse at Kittredge Field, the team will now call Prentup Field home. As the Lacrosse Buffs enter the Big 12, CU was granted the honor of hosting the first-ever Big 12 Lacrosse Championship at the conclusion of the regular season.
...

ROAM WITH THE BUFFS: The Buffs' game against the Black Knights will be broadcast on ESPN+. Fans can also follow the Colorado game through live stats with links available at CUBuffs.com.

KNIGHT KNIGHT: This is the first time the two programs will face each other, and Army West Point is the Buffs' first Patriot League opponent. The Black Knights are 8-2 in their last 10 games and have started the season on a three-game winning streak. Coached by fourth-year head coach Michelle Tumolo, Army West Point has only played games in the state of New York so far this season.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Out of 15 regular season games, eight of the Black and Gold's matchups will be at home. After starting the season on the road, the Buffs will return to play five games in a row at home from Feb. 28 - Mar. 20 (Amy, Michigan, Marquette, Iona, Stony Brook). After another three-game road stint, CU will return to Boulder for its first Big 12 home lacrosse games against Florida (Apr. 12) and UC Davis (Apr. 20) as well as nonconference in-state rival Denver (Apr. 17).

LOCAL LEGENDS: Lacrosse is ever-growing in the state of Colorado, and this season the Buffs have five local athletes on the roster. Rachel Kennedy (Littleton), Phoebe Rogala (Denver), Averi Gardner (Evergreen), Bella Reece (Evergreen) and Lily Assini (Englewood) all hail from our Centennial State.

EYES ON THE PRIZE: Gr. A Madeline Pisani is currently four points away from 100 career-points for the Buffs. She totals 81 goals and 15 assists, having finished last season with 75 goals and 14 assists (89 points). Jr. M Lily Assini currently sits at 78 career draw controls, 22 away from 100.

*Since publishing this preview, the game location has since been moved from Prentupp Field to the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF).

Still a LONG way to go today, but among I'm sure other things, looks like the Buffs have been working HARD on their defense, as they take a 7-1 lead into halftime over #21/25 ranked Army.

NICE!!! As an admittedly nervous fan, got a little concerned watching the live stats as the 3rd quarter unfolded after the 2nd half issues the team experienced in its 1st 2 games, but in this one all ends well as CU dominates the 4th and earns its 1st win of the season 12-6 over the ranked Black Knights.

And, props to frosh goalie Oh, who after taking over starting duties last week (not an easy debut to face off against powerhouse Northwestern), was HUGE today, stopping (with I'm sure a lot of help from her teammates' defensive positioning and effort) 2/3rds of the Army shots on goal.

Way to go Buffs!

Edit - And, congrats to Ms. Pisani on reaching a big milestone -
