BOULDER - The post-season looms right around the corner for women's lacrosse, and Colorado faces a pivotal road trip as the squad travels to play Stanford and Cal this weekend.
No. 20 USC broke Colorado's (7-6, 5-2) three-game win streak in a highly competitive game last Friday night, but the Buffs recovered to defeat Arizona State to close out the weekend. With the Buffs' loss to USC though, the Trojans have clinched at least a share of the conference title. If they defeat ASU next weekend, they'll be the undisputed champions.
That means that competition for finishing second in the Pac-12 is fierce, and at 5-2 in conference, Colorado and Stanford are tied for the coveted spot. If the winner of Friday's match wins the rest of their conference games, they'll be seeded as second in the Pac-12 tournament. The No. 2 seed would provide that team with a crucial bye from the first round of the tournament and automatically place them in the semi-finals.
CU defeated Stanford (7-7, 5-2) in their first conference game while in Boulder earlier this season. The close 17-15 victory for the Buffs marked the program's and Ann Elliott Whidden's 100th win.
The Buffs will continue to fight to win one game at a time, starting with Stanford on Friday night at 5 p.m. MT and closing out the weekend with Cal at 2 p.m. MT on Sunday.
THE CARDINAL
Stanford has proven to be a formidable foe on their home field this season, boasting a 5-1 record. If the Buffs earn a victory, it'll be the first time they've defeated the Cardinal at home since 2019 and it would mark the first time that CU has swept Stanford in the regular season since 2018.
If CU hopes to walk away victorious, they'll need to shut down Annabel Frist. The sophomore is second in the Pac-12 in goals with 44 so far this season and is averaging 3.14 goals per game.
THE GOLDEN BEARS
The Buffs won in a 20-3 landslide victory over the Golden Bears (4-10, 1-6) at home earlier this year. If CU loses to Cal on Sunday, it'll be the first time they've lost since 2015.
Cal is currently on a one game winning streak, most recently defeating UC Davis 17-12. Prior to that, the Golden Bears had lost five straight conference games and are in last place in the Pac-12. Their only conference victory has come from a 13-12 win over Oregon.
