Gallagher-Iba Arena, Stillwater, Okla.
Tip: 1:01 p.m. MT
Watch: ESPN+ (James Westling, Bryndon Manzer)
Radio: KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM (Mark Johnson, Scott Wilke)
Listen Online: Sirius XM 381, SXM App 971
Live Statistics: https://buffs.me/3CfciAJ

THE BUFFALOES: Colorado is 9-7 overall and 0-5 in Big 12 Conference play after falling to Cincinnati on Jan. 15. The Buffaloes are 0-5 in conference play for the first time since 2016-17, when Colorado dropped its first seven Pac-12 games before rebounding to win eight of its last 11. Overall, it's Colorado's first five-game skid since dropping the final five games of the 2019-20 season ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of conference and national postseason tournaments.

Colorado is averaging 73.8 points per game, shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, Colorado is allowing 70.8 points per game while opponents are shooting 41.8 percent.

The Buffaloes will be playing in their third true road game of the season and looking for their first win. Colorado is 1-4 away from Boulder this season, that win coming at the Maui Invitational against defending NCAA champion UConn. Colorado will play four of its next six on the road.

The Buffaloes rank third in the Big 12 in free throw percentage (.762), fifth in defensive rebounds (27.1 drpg) and eighth in steals (7.6 spg), blocks (4.0 bpg) and rebounding defense (32.7 rpg).
...

ABOUT THE COWBOYS: Oklahoma State is 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12, coming off an 0-2 road trip at Utah and BYU over the last week. The Cowboys have won six of seven at home this season. OSU averages 73.4 points per game and ranks last in the Big 12 in shooting at 41.9 percent. The Cowboys are a top 30 team nationally in getting to the line (24.4 FTApg) and shoot 72.3 percent from the charity stripe. OSU allows 74.0 points per game and ranks last in field goal defense at 47 percent. The Cowboys are second in the Big 12 in steals (9.0 spg) and turnovers forced (15.3 topg).

Fifth-year forward Abou Ousmane leads Oklahoma State at 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. Fifth-year forward Marchelus Avery is second on the team at 12.0 points and 5.1 rebounds while leading the team with 27 3-point field goals made coming off the bench. Junior Arturo Dean leads the Cowboys in steals (31) and ranks second in assists (45) while scoring 6.6 points an outing.

Steve Lutz is in his first season as the head coach at Oklahoma State and fourth overall at the NCAA Division I level, having previously led Western Kentucky (2023-24) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2021-23). He is 78-42 as a head coach.

THE SERIES: This will be the 110th meeting between Colorado and Oklahoma State in a series that dates back to 1948, 11 seasons before the Cowboys would join the Big Eight Conference. Oklahoma State holds a 61-48 all-time series lead. This will be the first meeting in 11 years, since a nonconference neutral site game in Las Vegas on Dec. 21, 2013, won by the Cowboys, 78-73. Oklahoma State has won 27 of 37 all-time meetings in Stillwater. Colorado last won in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Jan. 21, 2006, in overtime.

Tad Boyle is 1-1 against Oklahoma State as a head coach, defeating the Cowboys 75-71 in Boulder during Colorado's last Big 12 season prior to this year. Steve Lutz has never faced Colorado as a head coach.

Leaving that disappointing home loss vs Cincy, my buddy and I came to a few conclusions. It's not that Boyle & Co are doing a bad job coaching this year, which is what he was saying on the post-game. ("We are the worst-coached team in the conference" - ouch.) It's that he's done a poor job balancing out recruiting, filling holes via the portal, getting the right guys into the system for more than one year. Both ends of the spectrum stick out to me - no depth at PG and very thin in the post. We plug in one old school, grad transfer center (Lambkin) for another (Malone). That should not be the case in year 15 of any coach's tenure. Lastly - Hammond is a fine player, despite what some say. He just gets no help. If we had solid PG options he'd split time - and probably have better nights - as the SG.

The problem with Hammond is not his individual game. Never has been. He's a damn good shooter who also has good body control through contact and isn't afraid to take it into the paint to finish (or hits his FTs when it doesn't drop). He also usually plays within the offense.

The problem is that he's never been a team leader. We saw it when KJ would miss time. For whatever reason, he doesn't elevate his teammates from the PG position or generate team chemistry. He's a great 6th man for a college team who you would play 25+ minutes and have on the court in crunch time. He's like Ski in a lot of ways (who had a great individual season as a senior when he took the PG job but our team results were the worst in Tad's tenure).

This ties into Tad's bad coaching job this season and observations that this team is less than the sum of its parts. We don't have a player leader. What most concerns me is that Tad isn't wired to coach mercenaries and that's how teams are constructed in this era.

Agree with all this. Hammond is not the alpha PG that we were lucky to have in KJ and Wright. But you can't force a guy to be what he's not, and apparently Boyle doesn't understand this. If he did, he would've gotten at least one proven PG out of the portal this year. Looking down the bench, I don't see one for next year either.

I'm leaning in to what you're saying on the mercenary thing, also that Tad simply is not changing with the times. His current roster is an obvious reflection of that. Most of these guys are worthy of playing at this level, but they're a bunch of odd parts.

I'm not seeing a 16th year for the Boyle era, given the higher profile of this athletic department.

I've heard Tad talk negative about his team . . . then down to players [he has never really called out players per se] but not as negative as he has been with this bunch. This team sounds like over-whelmed shattered pieces... I read the threads from the last two games and it sounds like we may be reverting to the Harrington years? I knew that it was going to be a year in transition (we lost some great guys) and step up to the B12, but early it seemed like we had some guys who could compete. Now to 0-5, with listless home games... What gives? Is Tad sort of done?

I don't think the problem is coaching, or motivation. They're just not talented. All of the recruiting momentum it seemed like we had prior to the NIL era started has evaporated.

How do we get Tad to play the NIL game? Because obviously ignoring it has destroyed the program.

I'm currently deluding myself into believing that the flu running through the team explains the last two weeks, and that the hope coming off of the UConn win wasn't 100% an illusion.

10 turnovers
16 fouls committed
Outrebounded by 3
1/9 from 3

Good thing OSU isn't good, because those are 1st half stats which should see us down 20 on the road instead of 10.

Trying to decide if I'm going to waste my time thinking we can make a comeback or just turn it to the KC/Houston game.

At least our fouls are spread out.

But 1 guy with 4 PFs and another 5 with 3 at 15:57 is ridiculous.
