Games thread- MEN'S BBall on the road to face Oklahoma State (Sat., 1/18/25; 1:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and then host BYU (Tues., 9:00 PM MT; ESPNU)

Easily worse.
Still won 3 games in the Big 12. More importantly, I somewhat exclude that year because Tharp had undermined Patton by that time with no contract extension. Patton then resigned before the season and was a lame duck coach. That’s certainly not true of Boyle.

They were 4-6 against a weaker non-con

If this year's team wins 2 or less conference games, maybe there's a discussion.

I don't think I fully appreciated how quick, fast and explosive KJ was until watching Hammond & Ruffin plodding this season. I thought I had been appropriately wowed by KJ, but now my eyes have been fully opened.
I'm noticing how weak the perimeter passing is. The step back from TDS, LOB, and Cody, in addition to the massive step back from KJ is glaring. So many passes are floated, late, and/or of target; the 2/14 is more than just a bad shooting night.

TDS did so many things for us and was so much better in all aspects of the game than we ever gave him enough credit for. Probably the biggest criticism I have of him as a Buff is that he wasn't selfish enough about getting his.

This has to be the worst team Tad's had so far, they just don't look like a Tad led team at all. I guess it's understandable after losing 3 NBA players.

Can't get away with terrible defense and an insane amount of turnovers when you don't have offensive weapons.

Pretty obvious we need to be better in the portal going forward to deal with roster turnover better.

What really frustrates me is that there are things this team has which are really good. Probably Tad's best shot blocking team. Also a great FT shooting team which also shows itself in jump shooting when it's an open look and feet are set.

If only they could dribble, rebound, defend 1-on-1, have any chemistry, or get consistent production from anyone. Just a few small things to clean up.

I've always wanted Tad to be OK with good shooters taking open 3s early in the shot clock. Baskin passed up an open look about two possessions ago, dribbled into a double team and it ended with a bad contested shot after a couple frantic passes.

That was Mike Bohn who allowed Patton to go into his final contract year. Terrible leadership by him. Patton should've been replaced - even he was expecting it. But Bohn boned it up, which cost us badly in recruiting for a good 2-3 seasons after that.

I did want to post some positives and take a look forward.

Dak continues to develop and does a lot of special things you rarely see from a guy with his height. 15p, 5r, 2a, 1s, 1b today against 2to & 1pf. He could become a star.

Rancik is starting to develop and find his stride. 11p & 3r today with 1to.

Diop was in foul trouble all day and had a rough one, but we've seen what he's capable of as a Swiss Army Knife/ Glue Guy.

That's a promising front court for next year, with Tacko coming in with the freshman class to add some beef to the group.

I also like RJ as a catch & shoot 2-guard. We've got freshman guards coming in next year (I think Johnson is going to surprise people with how mature he is as a freshman as my surprise for 25-26), Crawford coming off redshirt, and Ruffin returns. Also, Kossaras returns.

I think what I want to see a lot more of the rest of this season is development for next season. We need to see increased minutes for Dak, Diop, Rancik and RJ - including stretches with all of them on the court together.

Don't forget about Carrington. Natural shot blocker with hops that can hit the 3.

Think tad will go there?

Thank you. I keep forgetting he's just a sophomore. He's going to give us steady, reliable, efficient play for the next 2 years. It's a really solid group of underclassmen in the front court.

Agree with all this. Hammond is not the alpha PG that we were lucky to have in KJ and Wright. But you can't force a guy to be what he's not, and apparently Boyle doesn't understand this. If he did, he would've gotten at least one proven PG out of the portal this year. Looking down the bench, I don't see one for next year either.

I'm leaning in to what you're saying on the mercenary thing, also that Tad simply is not changing with the times. His current roster is an obvious reflection of that. Most of these guys are worthy of playing at this level, but they're a bunch of odd parts.

I'm not seeing a 16th year for the Boyle era, given the higher profile of this athletic department.
Here's the question-if not Tad, then who? There's no Coach Prime type out there.

I'm currently deluding myself into believing that the flu running through the team explains the last two weeks, and that the hope coming off of the UConn win wasn't 100% an illusion.

At least 3 of the players mentioned will transfer. At least 2 of the players mentioned we don’t want to stay. We’re in a baaaaaad spot.

I've been extremely disappointed in Malone in conference play.

Also, regarding Carrington...Lama is lower on him than he deserves, but anyone here glad he's on scholarship in a million time tops high on him

Is Steve Smiley from UNC an upgrade? Is Richard Pitino an upgrade?

That's the pool that CU is playing in.
This is the mentality that's left us stuck in an I-70 rut for the past 35 years. We literally have not hired a coach outside that corridor since Joe Harrington in 1990. The mentality of "we don't deserve better" is going to keep us here forever. There are well over a hundred teams out there playing in really competitive conferences, and many of those coaches are paid less than Boyle. We shouldn't have to break the bank for a guy who can bring in steady, legit talent every single year. Tad's an honorable man but his specialty is picking up guys that nobody else notices, then turning them into players. It's a nice talent, but no way to run a program.

I don't pay attention to many other conferences, but who's the coach of UC Irvine again? They're 17-2. Miami (O) is having a nice year. Bradley (16-3), Drake (16-2) - these teams aren't depending on big NIL money; they recruit.

Some AD - hopefully Mr. George - has to decide, enough with mediocrity. Let's try something different.

My bigger point is this-this isn't going to be the football search from two years ago. There's no Coach Prime type candidate we can all look at and say "Yeah, CU should lock in on that coach."

I'd rather swing for an assistant from a Tennessee or an ISU than any head coach from a one bid league.

Gotcha. No, I don't see this search as anything like the Prime hire because the bar is so much lower, and the rewards too. We should be shooting for a coach that can have a steady, quality product on the floor year after year. If we get that, season tickets will be steady. Denver folks will want to make the trip because they'll know what to expect. My #1 complaint with Boyle is that his recruiting is all over the map year to year. Very few of his players are "sure thing" guys, even the grad transfers. The result is that we have years like this one where we have BIG gaps in our roster. Thin at PG, thin in the post - that should not be happening in any coach's 15th year in the same program.
