Games thread- MEN'S BBall on the road to face (RV) Arizona (Sat., 1/25/25; 1:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and then hosts ASU (Tuesday, 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

Ruffin is worthless, why even give him minutes over younger guys like Smith and Kossaras? Missing the first FT of a one and one is BRUTAL
At least he’s seasoned and gives an effort. TBH, Smith has either had his soul crushed or has one foot out the door.

Just got home from the game and....

Hard to imagine where Boyle thought the points would come from this year. Beyond Hammond, nobody on this team can create points. My hunch is that he got cocky after KJ (especially) and DaSilva saved our bacon time after time last season. Tad always considered himself a good offensive mind, and he’s been wrong for 15 years. The real mark is that this team is playing worse now than they were 6 weeks ago.

If we don’t make a change, I will not be renewing. I may, however, start driving up to see JR’s team instead.

A lot of people around us saying the same thing. 😬

I read something on another board yesterday that Boyle's buyout is not exactly inviting. Something like $8 million if it happens after this year. And then there's the expense of bringing on a new coach. A big bite out of apple, although I assume the payout would occur over the years he would've been paid - $2 million/year, or whatever - and maybe/possibly offset if he takes a job elsewhere? Still - that's a new sales pitch for Mr. George to take on. He was all smiles at the game last night, at least when I saw him in the first half.

The other observation from his comments in the post-game. He's starting to remind me of Ricardo Patton in his weird, avoidable final year. He's not shirking any blame, but he's not offering any hope for solutions either. That's a new look for Boyle. Unfortunate all around, but it is reality.

What does it take to end the automatic contract extension every year?
Details are murky, but I was able to find this in this link, SportsKeeda?

It sounds like this would be a negotiated settlement. Not sure what possible leverage the university has when they agreed to a "perpetual five-year contract."

Tad Boyle Contract

Tad Boyle, the head coach at Colorado since 2010, recently received a boost in his perpetual five-year contract. The Colorado University's Board of Regents approved new terms, elevating his annual base and supplemental salary to $2.425 million, a significant increase of $625,000 from the previous two years.

While Boyle's base salary experienced a slight drop from $350,000 to $300,000, he received substantial hikes in various supplemental categories. Categories like "promotion and fundraising" and "sponsorship support" increased from $375,000 to $625,000 each. Additionally, a new category, "community relations and outreach," was introduced, contributing $220,000 annually.

Boyle's incentive bonuses structure remains mostly unchanged, with a few eliminations, indicating the university's continued investment in his coaching prowess. These adjustments affirm Boyle's integral role in the Colorado basketball program and highlight the university's commitment to his multifaceted contributions.

This is the perfect way to put it. The "these guys are getting worse each game, and that's something we need to figure out, but I don't know why" comment was kicker for me. He's looking and sounding more and more like he's getting close to the end of his rope.

And to think, adding just one legit transfer last offseason would've likely had this team at 14-6 right now. I can't shake my frustration over this.

Tad will either retire or make changes. He's not the type to accept status quo of losing seasons with an empty arena because the job title serves his ego and it's a nice paycheck. What I'm getting at is that I don't believe we need to have certain discussions because it will take care of itself one way or the other.

One other thing that shocked me is that Tad admitted he's been letting Rohn handle lineups and substitutions. It's been pretty rough lately TBH.

Yup agreed. Bad seasons happen. I don't think anyone thought it'd get this bad but. If he's back next season I'm confident the program under Tad will bounce back.

I can bitch and moan all I want, but Tad will be back next year if he wants to be. He's earned it and the last thing RG wants to do is think about anything to do with MBB.

I'm just gonna make this observation. Between last season and this one, we may have seen the best and the worst of what Boyle has to offer. Aside from the obvious, justified concerns about how far we've dropped in less than a year, how long will it take for Boyle to put together another season like 2023-24? At best, I'd say 2 seasons from now, more likely 3 or 4 seasons.

THAT means we're patiently waiting to reach the top of Boyle Mountain again - we get an NCAA bid and are gone home after a game or two.

This is the best this program can do? If that's the case, and we don't have any aspirations of being an better than mediocre, I'd love to hear someone admit that. Because then I'd have all the proof I need that this program has been a waste of time for many of us.

A quick review of the seasons Hadley, LOB (injured 9 games) and Lampkin are having: stats are essentially the same as last year with very little variance. Early on I thought Elijah was an upgrade but nope he looks like a lost low confidence player. Did all 3 choose to leave or were asked? Baskin has been mostly acceptable, but Id prefer Hadley over Jak at this point.

I think with Hadley he made it known he was leaving with a ton of notice. Something about better taking care of a child, iirc.
